Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Before saving your changes to an article, please provide an edit summary, which you forgot to do before saving your recent edit to Bowling Green State University. Doing so helps everyone understand the intention of your edit (and prevents legitimate edits from being mistaken for vandalism). It is also helpful to users reading the edit history of the page. "Inclusive Language" a plea
[edit]Svlberg, Thanks for joining wikipedia. I hope you will enjoy this place, and look forward to your contributions. I noticed a change you made to the FCC page, and saw your User Page where you say that you are copy editing, and editing for "inclusive language.". You may find it helpful to spend a moment reading the wikipedia style guides on gender neutrality. One is here: Use_modern_language#Gender_neutrality and another is here: Wikipedia:GENDER.
I think the advise given on these two pages is sound (although I happen to disagree about the use of "chair"), and hope you will consider it. (To me, replacing "The chairman is selected by the president from amongst the commissioners." with "The chair is selected ...commissioners." or ("The president selects the chair from amongst the commissioners." are both improvements to the original.)
Notice that in the first of the above references, there is specific advise to avoid the word "chairperson". In lieu of this advise, I'm going to undo your FCC change, not just because "chairperson" is clumsy, but also because Martin is actually a man, and calling him a "chairperson" adds letters and syllables, and actual makes the sentence less precise.
I suspect that if you look, you will find many examples of genuine paternalism in the various articles on this site, and I look forward to those corrections and improvements. If you like, I will post a note to you here when I find such things to aid you in your work.
I'll watch this page for any response that you may care to make.
Again, welcome and happy editing. TheNgeveld 00:27, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
- And yes, I realize that I meant "advice" and not "advise" in the above. Sadly, I am a very poor speller. Hence my particular fondness for good copy editors. TheNgeveld 00:29, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
