In past over the geological time there was hydrocarbons lakes,rivers and ocean of hydrocarbons on the surface of the earth and has been buried after mixing with organic matter from the surface of earth and has been converted into coal/so called source rocks.organic matter from the surface has nothing to produce coal/so called source rocks but just has been mixed in pre generated hydrocarbons.
