Administrators' newsletter – October 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

How do i get the Novice Editor badge

I recently crossed the 200 edits threshold (Woohoo) But where do I get the badge from? Is it given/inserted in my talk page by another wikipedia editor?

Hello LostCitrationHunter (talk · contribs)! To get the badge you only need to insert it by yourself. You can read about it in Wikipedia:Service awards. If you need help, I can insert the badge for you. Have a good weekend! SunDawntalk 14:06, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

@SunDawn Yesss please. That means a lot to me. I actually thought that some one prestigious else from wikipedia presented the badge in the talk page. Can you also insert the 'Achievement' template with the progress bar too in my user page, like you got? Thankss a lot!

Is it possible for someone else to be using my account?

Hello. I recently saw that I received many alerts for vandalism. I do not remember making any of these edits. Is it possible that my account has been hacked/accessed from an outside editor who is making these offensive edits? Thanks, 96.27.252.150 (talk) 21:49, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

Good day 96.27.252.150 (talk · contribs)! As you are not using an account to edit, other people that have some IP as yours might make the vandalism edits. Just make a new account and you can edit without hassle! If you need questions please do ask! Best of luck! SunDawntalk 00:16, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

American Values Coalition

Hi Sun. I'm Executive Director of American Values Coalition. We bought the rights to americanvalues.org. I'm trying to delete your references showing that site belongs to the Institute for American Values. I don't have experience with Wikipedia edits. Can you help? Thanks. 2600:1700:1BD0:18F0:40B3:9580:B8EE:63BF (talk) 15:24, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Good day 2600:1700:1BD0:18F0:40B3:9580:B8EE:63BF (talk · contribs)! Apologies for the revert, it turns out that the site didn't belong to Institute for American Values anymore. My suggestion is when you use edit, please use the edit summaries and give short explanation on why the link is removed. I will remove the warning from your talk page and fix the link for you. Have a good day! SunDawntalk 15:31, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

You reverted the edit I made. That was I think uncalled for. The article points out that there are a great many questions, and many credible people believe that the police forged evidence and the courts turned a blind eye to it. My change merely reflected that (saying he's a mass murderer implies that there's no ambiguity at all.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8801:C800:50D:AC7D:B47B:62DD:1E6A (talk) 01:46, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello 2600:8801:C800:50D:AC7D:B47B:62DD:1E6A (talk · contribs), hopefully you have a nice day. I on the other hand disagreed that he is merely a prisoner. He has murdered several people. He has been convicted for the crime in the court. While I do agreed that there is a possibility of his innocence, it doesn't change the result of the trial - that he is convicted of multiple first degree murder. On the other hand, I think the tone could be changed from "mass murderer" into "prisoner convicted of multiple homicide". I will also remove the warning on your talk page, thank you. Red House

Yes I edited out a single word (racist) that was not supported by a citation; And, As such, do not have a citation myself. As this article my be used to help write a section of history, I determined that I should help it to be less biased than it already is.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.216.175.92 (talk) 03:37, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello 173.216.175.92 (talk · contribs)! Hopefully you have a great day today. The citation of the article is this article and the article have clearly stated that racism is the issue. It may be biased, but Wikipedia only reported what is said on the sources, not what we see is the truth or what we believe in. If you have other sources that supported your view that there are no racism involved, please do add to the article. Thank you and have a great day! SunDawntalk 03:42, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
Yes but as you yourself stated 2 months ago, News isn't an accepted citation as referenced here [2] (PS sorry went and made a user account)Fullblowninsane (talk) 04:39, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
Hello, hopefully you have a great morning today. I have checked my edit and the reason I removed the content is because it does not have any references. News articles per WP:CITE is accepted as a source, but it must be reliable per WP:RS. If you have questions, please do ask! Have a good day! SunDawntalk 14:12, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
