Template

Sukh, I delved deeper into the matter, actually to ascertain what procedure had preceded your creation of the Indic template (none; am I right?), and I found that you have contributed vastly towards the creation of this page, which is a great help to all of us. Accept my kudos on that sterling contribution! Many of us contribute to editing WP, but you have done something systemic.

However, I still think it was premature/imprudent of you to clean out the well-intentioned work of other people before the matter was discussed on the deletion page. Coupled with the diligence with which you defend your Template:IndicText against the smallest imaginable change, the impression conveyed is unfortunately of superciliousness. However, I shall have nothing further to say on the matter except to urge you not to make the discussion majority-oriented, which will be vitiative and counter-productive (after all, we would like people to use the template without reservation) but rather to agree to some small changes in what is after all only a logo. My best regards, ImpuMozhi 07:58, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

First of all, apologies for such a late reply - I completely missed your message! And thank you for your kind words in regards to the help page. And yes, you are right, there was no process to speak of when I made the template and help pages. I was getting frustrated with people constantly changing Indic text to what they thought was right, so decided to do something about it. The template has been very successful in educating users as to the problems although it only seems to make an impact when it is prominently placed on a page.
I suppose my changes were arrogant (slightly!), however my rationale for changing the template was that it was used on perhaps four pages at most and my aim was to nip it in the bud before it spread. I know in hindsight this might have seemed bad-natured, but I didn't expect such the anti-Gurmukhi logo response that I got. Indeed, I thought using a minority script such as Gurmukhi would have actually helped stem the traditional north-south issues of Indian languages/scripts. But, I was wrong, largely because most people still thought it was Devanagari!
I have no problem in using a neutral logo of some sort (for example, my idea of a Brahmi character), however I have no want or need to actively change it. If someone wants to come up with a replacement logo, I'd be more than happy to comment and indeed support it if it truely was a neutral logo. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 23:26, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
How about the Malayalam logo? It is also "minority" by your reckoning and not less "neutral" than Gurmukhi. ImpuMozhi 00:14, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Would there be any point in changing it to Malayalam? If it is no more neutral than Gurmukhi then it serves no purpose (other than to prove an extraneous point). This applies equally to all other Indic scrips in use today. However, as I said a Brahmi character or a sign such as a star would be neutral. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 00:18, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
I actually only meant it as a kind of (perhaps facetious) joke, not seriously. On a serious note, I can tell you that the symbols convey no meaning to the general user. I don't consider myself stupid (I do say so myself) but I understood what meaning (maatraa-placement) was intended to be conveyed by the Gurmukhi only after the debate on this matter. Else the figures just looked like a logo/squiggle. You should seriously consider the other options (logo/flag/Brahmi), given that both syllable-symbols and maatra-symbols are different for different languages. Also, sorry I missed your message, having no idea you would reply here and not on my page. ImpuMozhi 04:45, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Indeed I agree, most users will not be familar with what is going on in the picture. The same would apply to other Indic languages of course, because the logical ordering and complex rendering for Unicode is a relatively new thing.
I don't think a flag will be appropriate. Indic scripts include things like Tibetan and Thai which although descended from Brahmi, are not 'Indian'. I have been dabbling with a Brahmi font, and I'll be sure to look into having a couple of options posted on the talk page (a mini-vote if you would). I've added it to my to-do list, so hopefully it'll be done sooner rather than later. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 01:13, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
Great, Sukh. Whatever you think suitable. Once again, I vastly admire your creating the Template:IndicText help-page, I'm sure its a phenomenal help to anyone having problems. ImpuMozhi 14:19, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Sikhism Portal

Hi Sukh! I was wondering if you can take the responsibility of maintaining Portal:Sikhism. It's not a lot of work (I manage two portals, all you have to do is change the content from time to time, and ensure there is no vandalism, etc.) Please put your name at the appropriate place on Wikipedia:Portal/Directory/Temp deeptrivia (talk) 08:17, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi! Yes, I'd be more than happy to maintain it and I've added my name. I've already made some minor changes to it. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 11:39, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
Great! ਨਵਾ ਸਾਲ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ!! deeptrivia (talk) 01:55, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Punjabi map

You need to point me to an online map so that I can draw it. It may take a week or so to produce it as I have moved on to producing vector based maps. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:07, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Right, well there isn't an online map that I've found yet that serves this purpose. However, I'll upload one i made myself and see if that helps? Pointing out the bits in Paint ;D Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 17:52, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
I've uploaded an example map to Image:Punjabi.Speaking.Areas.Draft.jpg. Could you make a map that somehow shows the historic Punjab, split into the current states and provinces? Then label Pakistani/Indian Punjab as being predominantly Punjabi speaking, as with the border areas between HP/Haryana/Rajastan. The rest of HP/Haryana/Rajastan should be listed as Punjabi + local tongue (Hindi mostly). This should carry on down to Delhi which should be listed as having a significant numbers of Punjabi speakers. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 18:57, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm assuming that undivided Punjab consists of Punjab (Pak+India); HP and HR. I think it would be better if you could locate a map which shows both the Indian states and Pakistani provinces. That would be easier to recreate. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:28, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
HR, HP and Delhi were all a part of undivided British Punjab. Here are pictures of the Indian states: [1] and here are Pakistani provinces: [2]. Is that okay? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 10:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
I was looking for a single map which shows both the countries' subdivisions. I essentially trace out the borders. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:01, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Do these help? [3] and [4]. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 15:10, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
yes, the first one is the one I'm looking for. Just let me know how you want the shading to be for Rajasthan and J&K. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:26, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
I've found some information on Kashmir [5]. If you could highlight the areas of Punjabi AND of Dogri (although maybe different colours)? Because Dogri's status as a dialect of Punjabi is doubted by some. In regards to Rajasthan, I'm not sure of the distribution of Punjabi speakers, but this page [6] reports "Rajasthani is also spoken with some Punjabi influence in Ganganagar district in the north-west." This district is shown here [7]. Again, many thanks. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 16:03, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

IndicText

"looks ugly and fits incorrectly under infoboxes" are comments you need to explain. My change made the template fit perfectly next to any infobox. Notice above how your version goes side-by-side, but my version stacked perfectly. This template needs to work both above an infobox and below. Revert yourself and compare. -- Netoholic @ 22:47, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, the first comment "looks ugly" is obviously an opinion. However, the second point was not in regards to stacking - it was in regards to size. Having templates of all sorts of sizes does not really have any aesthetic appeal. However, if you can get the original template to stack properly, I certainly won't have a problem with that. There are many pages where the template is placed awkwardly. This is not however a problem with the template - it just needs to be positioned properly around other templates. Help

Hey Sukh, when I was in primary school, we learned a prayer at school, which I mostly remember. But I never fully understood its meaning. Can you help? It goes like this:

I must have made many mistakes in this because this is based on memory of 15 years ago. Hopefully you'll recognize it. Thanks! deeptrivia (talk) 06:28, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Of course I recognise it, virtually every Sikh would :D Spelling is a bit bad, but other than that it's okay! See [8] for the original text. When you pronounce the Gurmukhi text, you don't pronounce the final ਿ or . For example, ਜਪੁ is pronounced Jap, not Japu.
It's the first entry (verse), or first 'Pauri' in the Guru Granth Sahib. Also see Mool Mantar.Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 13:43, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

bangla

yes, I agree. The reference to bangla, instead of bengali, was mostly because of ignorance. However, now more and more bangla speaking people insist on the correct labeling of the language as Bangla instead of Bengali. Ofcourse one could use "The Bengali language" instead of "Bangla", but that choice is a matter of taste.

Taxila Image in Punjab (Pakistan)

I think that the Taxila image (Taxila Buddha.jpg) would be more appropriate in Punjab region page rather than Punjab (Pakistan) page. I have removed that image from Punjab (Pakistan) page. Siddiqui 22:16, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm reverting your changes - there is no need to remove the images. They are equally as relevant to Pakistan Punjab as they are in Punjab Region. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:21, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
I don't agree. The Punjab region page is more appropriate. Can we discuss or we can play football of rerversions every 15 minutes ? Siddiqui 22:24, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
Certainly we can discuss. Why do you think the photo is not relevant to the Pakistan Punjab page? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:25, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Shahmukhi

Kee daa? I just started working on the Panjabi Wikipedia, and I noticed that there are no articles in Shahmukhi. Am I the only one who is working in Shahmukhi? Will the Panjabi Wikipedia be dominated by Gurumukhi, or will Shahmukhi transliteration be allowed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by AyyoubW (talkcontribs)

I suppose the issue here is whether Shahmukhi needs its own wiki or not. There technically shouldn't be a problem having both Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi versions on the same Wikipedia because the article names won't interfere. However, certain things required for Shahmukhi (such as RTL rendering of the page) won't be possible by default.
I suppose I could file a bug report to get a new Shahmukhi one set up. What would you prefer? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 12:18, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I don't know, whichever you want. I am new and cannot do much, nor do I know much about Wikipedia. I was thinking of just transliterating the existing Gurmukhi articles into Shahmukhi, but if there is no Shahmukhi layout possible, that would be okay.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.166.54.91 (talkcontribs)
I'll look into it for you. There isn't a problem in representing Shahmukhi per-se, but the interface will remain left-to-right (unless a user manually changes the language settings in options).
Now, does Shahmukhi use the exact characters that Urdu uses? If so, I don't see a technical problem in implementing it. Indeed, if you could add further information to the Shahmukhi article, that would be excellent. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 01:09, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes there is one extra letter, but it is made of two urdu letters. Thank you for trying to help me ji. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AyyoubW (talkcontribs)
I see. I was under the impression that there were three 'extra' characters, but I have never been able to find them. Unicode lists the following specifically for Lahnda:
I've found the following two listed under Lahnda in the Unicode charts:
ڰ Arabic Letter Gaf with Ring [06B0]
ڋ Arabic Letter Dal with Dot below and Small Tah [068B]
And these under Siraiki:
0759 – Arabic letter dal with two dots vertically below and small tah (Siraiki)
0768 – Arabic letter noon with small tah (Siraiki)
Are any of these needed? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 23:17, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
No, none of these are needed for modern Panjabi. I am sorry that I have not been able to write for a while, I have been busy with schoolwork. I will try to get started on converting some articles from gurumukhi to shahmukhi as soon as possible. Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.97.218.44 (talkcontribs) 22:46, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
Okay, excellent! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 23:37, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
I Forgot to tell you something about the Shahmukhi letters above: They are not common, but I use them sometimes. The gaf with ring reads "gg" as in phagg, the Dal with a dot underneath is read DD, as in gaDDee, the nun with small toye above is prounced as Nhanhnhaa. There are a few others you haven't mentioned. there is ٻ, which is read bb, as in pabb (water lily), ڄ, which is read jj, as in jhajjar.

Hi Sukh, I wanted to let you know that an article I've worked a lot on recently, the Political integration of India is now FAC. I hope you will have some time to consider the work and give it an up or down vote. Please don't consider this soliciting - I'm requesting your participation. Thanks! Sukh, if you are familiar with Punjabi movies can you please check whether the movies listed in Yograj Singh are all real ones. I just removed a couple that looked fake. All the movies currently listed were added by IP editors. Tintin (talk) 21:25, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I don't have a massive knowledge regarding Indian or Punjabi movies. However, IMDB lists his filmography. Not all the films are listed though. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:11, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, do you know anyone who is good at Punjabi movies - atleast to make sure that my deletions weren't incorrect ? Tintin (talk) 22:15, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that you are one of the more frequent editors on things Punjabi so I just wanted your input on the page as I redid it and added references and other information and made it more accessible to readers I think as well, hopefully. In particular, if you have anything to add on the Sikhs that could be useful would help the page I'd say. Thanks. Tombseye 18:59, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

An initial look at the article suggests the changes have been good! But, I'll look at it more indepth tomorrow. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 01:21, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Monotheism

Hi, Sukh, there's no discussion of Sikhism in the monotheism article. If you have time, can you and others write a section on Sikhism. A monotheism article without mention of Sikhism is woeffully inadequate!

Thanks, Raj2004 00:21, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Gobind

Thanks, Sukh But followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism do consider Krishna to be God as a single entity. The same goes with Vaishnavism which considers Vishnu to mean God as a single entity, with Hari being the name of Vishnu.

Raj2004 01:02, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, Sukh for clarifying the meaning. I appreciate it!
Raj2004 13:11, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi - I see you removed this phrase:

"The use of the name of Hindu deities does not refer to the deities themselves, but instead is a reference to God."

I don't understand what seems to be the issue with the phrase? It's not suggesting that all Hindus consider Krishna a diety - it is however the prevailing view (maybe avatar would be a better phrase). Also, I don't see why we would need the comparison with Gaudiya Vaishnavism on the Waheguru page? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 13:34, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

A deity may evoke wrong connotations. Hindus who follow Smarta Advaita philosophy may consider Krishna to be an Ishta-deva, one of the forms of God but most consider Krishna to be an avatar of Vishnu, however, not making a difference between worship of Vishnu or His avatars. But Gaudiya Vaishnavites consider Krishna to be the only one God.
A subtle distinction.
Raj2004 13:42, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Is the following more appropriate:
"The use of the name of a Hindu avatar does not refer to the avatar itself, but instead is a reference to God."
Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 15:11, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
That's fine. Yes, it's interesting that many of the names for God in Sikhism are all names of Vishnu, 1) Hari 2) Ram and 3) Govinda.
Raj2004 19:45, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello! I would not consider the Narkaris Sikhs, or Sikh related. They are offically excommunicated from the Sikh faith, to say that they are even related to it is not correct. Maybe put them under a catagory called "excommunicated groups/people"? Let me know what you think, Thank you. --Jghuman2 06:23, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, if they were Sikh enough to be excommunicated then they definately fall under the banner of Sikh-related. Just because something is related to Sikhism does not mean that it is condoned by the establishment or an integral part of the faith. To say that they are not Sikh-related would be a blatant lie.
Putting them under a new category is definately possible. But remember, we're not here to judge whether people are Sikhs or not. We merely state the truth about what has happened.

siddiqui RfC

Sorry, if i've destroyed any hopes you had for that RfC. I lost my temper with him. However, 2 weeks down the line, after wikiqette alerts, village pump (assistance) requests, pages locked, 3RR blocks etc etc..... if after all that he still refuses to answer direct questions about his conduct on wikipedia & ignores points made, then what is the point of the RfC? Veej 12:16, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

It's very easy to get too bothered and too involved with other Wikipedia editors that don't listen. Best solution is probably just to take a step back for a moment. Wikipedia dispute resolutions are bureaucratic and slow :D But I shouldn't think any comments there have destroyed hope for the RFC. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 12:29, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome! Punjabi Text

Many thanks for your warm welcome.

Yes, on my system when using Firefox or Netscape browser, I cannot read the Punjabi text on the 2 system that I regularly use. It does not make any sense having this text if it cannot be seen properly. Sorry, the changes that I made on the Punjabi tag template did not work and I just forgot to set it back, hoping to look at the problem at a later time.

When using Internet Explorer, the size of the Punjabi text is a little better, but still unreadable. I would welcome any suggestion! Can you explain how I use AnmolUni within my browser?

Many thanks in anticipation. --Hari Singh 18:27, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

First of all, you need to install the fonts from here: [9]. Just extract the zip file and copy the fonts to C:\Windows\Fonts (or on Windows 2000 that might be C:\WinNT\Fonts).
After that, in IE, go to 'Tools' then 'Internet Options...'. Click 'Fonts...' and then select Gurmukhi in the drop down box. Finally select AnmolUni as your web page font.
For Firefox, click 'Tools' > 'Options..' and select 'Content'. Then in the group called "Fonts and Colours" select "Advanced...". Here make sure you select Gurmukhi in the top drop down list. Then change all the fonts in the main dialogue box to AnmolUni where you can.
This should hopefully ensure that all your Gurmukhi text uses AnmolUni. If there is still an issue, please get in touch. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 20:11, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Bhai Makhan Shah

I write to thank you for your well-justified vote on the article's AfD page. I leave you a message only to assuage any prospective concerns that my nomination was driven by religious or personal animus; I likely should have tagged the page for cleanup, Wikification, sourcing, and context, and I am hopeful that a consensus will emerge for the subject's notablity, after which we may appropriately tag and improve the article. Although I was a bit off-put by the responses of the article's creator on the AfD page and sundry talk pages, inasmuch as they were not only mildly indecorous but also less-than-stellar as arguments, I understand that he inferred some hostile motive from my deletions; I commend you for your ostensible perception that one may have voted "delete" without having had some some malign motive. In any case, these sorts of discussions are what AfD is for, I think; just yesterday, I wrote to defend an AfD on which I had voted keep against a suggestion that the nomination was vandalism per se, and I think my words may now apply to me as well. Cordially, Joe 19:09, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

I certainly did not assign any malice to your original AfD; I understand why a person who doesn't have the appropriate background in Sikhism may think the story was not Wikipedia-worthy. Indeed as a Sikh myself (albeit not at all religous), I did not know of Makhan Shah.
Things like this happen all the time on Wikipedia and they mostly turn out alright! I appreciate your very eloquent message :D Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 20:04, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Gurmukhi Fonts on Firefox & Internet explorer

Hi Sukh,

That is a big improvement - I think you have saved me a further glasses precription! Great, I can see the Punjabi text now and I have had to modify some of the templates to decrease the Punjabi font size!! - I had to get the latest Firefox ver 1.5.1 and then it was like 123.

Thanks for your help. --Hari Singh 02:45, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
