Notes

[edit]

Provide more wikipedia links for terms such as, vorticity, mixing length model, Navier-Stokes equation, Reynold stress, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, Lagrangian and Eulerian.

Introduction

[edit]
  • Consider simplifying the first sentence, maybe something like: Turbulent flows are complex multi-scale and chaotic motions that need to be classified into more elementary components.
  • 'Time averages statistics can (instead of could) be applied'.
  • 'but even these larger structures' seems unnecessary.
  • Can you provide a reference for the first studies that started in the 1930s?
  • 'and the dynamic properties govern' (instead of 'and then there are...that govern...').
  • What does the fully developed approximation means?

History and Discovery

[edit]
  • Provide reference for Corrsin and Roshko data, and maybe also Hama's hydrogen bubble technique.
  • The ability to compute [...] produces (instead of produced).

Definition

[edit]
  • Define all terms in the coherent vorticity formula.
  • Some coherent structures, such as vortex rings, etc. can be large-scale motions comparable to...

Characteristics

[edit]
  • each coherent structure has its own...
  • increase in volume due to (instead of caused by)?
  • It is more believed that entrainment occurs... end of the sentence missing.
  • The next most significant properties are...
  • of such contours (not the such).
  • the contours of coherent vorticity constitute (not constitutes).
  • not only locate...but also identify (not identifies).

Formation

[edit]
  • Put the reference at the end of the sentence, not at the beginning.
  • Coherent structures typically arise from the instability due to either ... (not either the instability due...)
  • such rapid changes lead (not leads).
  • structures [...] distort or interact (not distorts or interacts).

Categories of coherent structures

[edit]

Lagrangian coherent structures

[edit]
  • I would use: 'groups of invariant sets that cause...'

Hairpin vortices

[edit]
  • from where the name originates.
  • It is believed that production and contributions to Reynold stress, occur...
  • Add reference about the 1991 definition of Robinson,s vortex structure.
