User boxes

Thanks for adding your user boxes to the list! Could you please categorize them?

Just add the following on the end:

For the food templates -

<noinclude> [[Category:Food user templates| ]] </noinclude>

For the other templates -

<noinclude> [[Category:xxx user templates| ]] </noinclude>

Replace the xxx with they type it is, eg law, business etc...

Do you plan on creating many more "flavoured" userboxes? The reason I ask is that it may behoove you to create a "super-userbox", similar to User:UBX/User FoxTrot (see the switch statements). If you're interested in doing this but need further assistance, feel free to let me know. –xeno talk 18:13, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Yep, looks great. You can also use words as well as numbers for the options i.e. [1]. –xeno talk 19:40, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Also, if you like I can delete the deprecated individual flavour boxen from your userspace. –xeno talk 19:54, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
There ya go. Also deleted UBX1 thru UBX9 or whatever, figured you wanted em gone 'cause they were blanked. Use {{db-user}} in future if you want to delete your internal pages. –xeno talk 20:05, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Creativity on userboxes

I was just watching at the so many and creative userboxes that you have made, and I wanted to ask you: How many flavours are you intend to have in the flavoured userbox? (just in case that many could cause some kind of problem). I ask you this, because I read the message of [If you wish to use another flavour, either create a new userbox or request it be added here on the Talk page] and I thought that since I can make my owns, your Flavour-shifting userbox is much more creative and more of my like.

By the way, which is your top-favorite most beloved fruit? (if you don´t remember, I sugested the dragon fruit flavour) - Damërung ...ÏìíÏ..._ΞΞΞ_ . --  22:53, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

About the flavours, how about if i customize your general flavour userbox to be shifting randomly between flavours? Like the clock in my talk page, only that it does not shift randomly, but consecutive, depending on time (you have to click in the clock in order to purge the cache and display current time) ...Oh and by the way, I suggested a new flavour. - comment added by Damërung (talkcontribs) 11:48, Wednesday 27 May 2009 (UTC)
p.s. I added that sign stamp because i have received some complains about my signature being disruptive, so i ask you: Can you see the typeface of my signature or is it just a big green annoying text?

Re: Jar Jar Binks

Hey! Getting back to your message: "Some comments on your userpage (mostly the ones by Scott) have inspired me to make a the userbox below. You might be interested in adding it to your page/telling your friend Scott about it, so I thought I'd let you know." It got a good laugh out of me. Keep up the good work. Adoption Offer

Absolutely yes! I would love for you to adopt me. Right now, I need help on Wikitext editing. With the kind assistance of another user I was able to create an article stub Valle de Chalco, but now I need to expand it. I have been referring to the Wikipedia Tutorial, as well as using editing sections of some existing articles as templates. But I am still having problems, e.g. editing code, even when pasted in from another article, does not yield the desired result. Thanks so much for any assistance you can give me, now and in the future. By the way, should I fill in an Edit Summary for my response to your offer? Not sure of the etiquette here. Escuincla (talk) 16:14, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Please Adopt Me Too

Thank you for offering to adopt me. I'm in much the same situation as Escuincla in that I love Wikipedia but am a complete novice at editing it. I have used Wikipedia for ages but am only now feeling that I am able to 'give back', and I don't want to mess anything up. I have considered where to start and find that I am spending all my time reading and very little time editing. I am thinging that I might start a new article on a Minneapolis Theater company that I am quite familiar with, but I don't know if it's too small to be included. The founder is a nationally known playwright who is in need of an entry, but again I'm wondering how 'famous' someone must be to have an enty. How do I know if a person warrants a new entry of their own? Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sabiona (talkcontribs) 15:27, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

And me three - I need your mentorship!

Hi,

I need help from an experienced Wikipedian, and I saw your name over at WP:ADOPT.

I need your advice concerning WP:WPOOK, which I've been coordinating. The set of pages the project concerns is listed at Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge#Projected outline, and has grown to about 500 articles in the encyclopedia.

The goals of the WikiProject are:

  1. Increase awareness of readers of the existence of the outlines on Wikipedia
  2. Complete the existing outlines
  3. Create an outline for every subject that is extensive enough to benefit from having an outline (core subjects and major or extensive fields). There are thousands of these.
  4. Recruit as many editors to work on these as possible (we need thousands of editors working on these)
  5. Surpass portals in number by the end of the summer, and leave them in the dust by the end of the year
  6. Get the major outline subject areas displayed on the Main Page (in place of or in addition to the portal links at the top of the page)
  7. Increase the OOK to higher quality than Britannica's Outline of Knowledge (published in its Propaedia volume).

I'm very interested in your comments on how to achieve these goals.

Also I'm interested in every possible way of reaching readers and editors of Wikipedia. How can I get the most eyes and typing fingers on Wikipedia's outlines? Contacting editors directly without a reason relevant to them is spam, which I'd like to avoid. There are 75,000 regular editors on Wikipedia, and I want to contact all of them. So how do I do it? Directly or indirectly, I don't care which, piecemeal or all-at-once, all methods are fine with me. But I've got to find ways. I need your help.

I would also like to know how to find or attract editors to create new outlines. And I need advice on finding editors to help write the new outline article mentioned above (it needs to be fleshed out, completely referenced, and brought to featured article status).

Please recommend anyone you know who might be interested in sinking their teeth into a project like this. Or ways to reach groups of editors. Or ways to reach all editors. I welcome any and all recommendations and advice you might have.

And any thoughts on attaining the WikiProject goals above.

I look forward to your reply on my talk page.

Thank you for the advice!

I've passed your suggestions on as tasks for our graphics guy. He's very good. He created these for some contests we're planning to host for the development of the country outlines:

I've posted a proposal for a contest at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries#Country outline contest proposal.

If you have time, please take a look. I'd sure love to read any ideas you might have.

Dear Mentor,

Thank you for your advice. We're putting it to good use.

I've run into a situation, and need your valuable insight.

One thing I've tried to do with respect to the outlines is place a hatnote on subject articles leading to that subject's corresponding outline.

Two people complained, and form the basis of consensus not to do it.

The main concern was quality: a hatnote shouldn't be placed unless the outline is of at least the same or higher quality than the article the hatnote is being placed on. That sets up a catch-22, since we need the best linking we can to attract readers and editors in the first place. The more traffic, the more feedback and changes.

So quality is the focus.

Please have a look at the outlines.

What are the biggest quality issues? What do the outlines need done to them in order to improve their quality?

I look forward to your reply on my talk page.

The Transhumanist 22:37, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Re: Hatnotes

If you're having troubles with a hatnote at the tope of the page, why don't you add it further down, in the See Also section, as with Exercise. This doesn't draw quite as much attention, but does help improve awareness of the outline system, and will probably be noticed by most editors interested in the topic. Also, since the link is less prominent, there should be fewer concerns over quality. I would also suggest adding a note on the Talk page - or perhaps a template to be placed with the Project boxes - to advertise the article's relevant outline and suggest editors contribute. For example:

This article has been flagged by WP:WPOOK as a central topic, and as such has an outline which can be found at Outline of topic. Please help contribute to this outline in order to increase coverage of this topic.

Creating a template with this (or similar) text and a variable link would make it easy for Project members to tag articles, and since many highly important topics would be included, awareness should rapidly improve. Making a template shouldn't be hard if you study some existing project boxes first - in fact, I would be happy to make one for you if you want.

I hope these suggestions help! If you need any more suggestions, let me know at my Talk page. strdst_grl (call me Stardust) 10:05, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

I've been placing the "main" links to outlines in the see also sections of the corresponding articles, including the one at Exercise#See also.  :)
See the banner at the top of Talk:Exercise. We placed that banner at the top of all corresponding subject talk pages about 3 weeks ago. It's a template, so any improvements to it will show up on all the pages it is displayed on.
Your suggestions are reassuring. It's nice to see we're on the right track.
And yes, any other ideas you come up with, please keep firing 'em at me.
I'll have more questions for you soon.

Outline update - Full Steam Ahead! - 06/18/2009

Several members of the WikiProject have been hard at work.

Buaidh has been building and refining the outlines on the U.S. States, the states' historical outlines, and the Historical outline of the United States. Lately, his edits have dominated the project's watchlist readout. (I think he's overdue for a barnstar or two. hint hint)

Penubag has been working on medals for all the main branches of the OOK, and has completed the OOK WikiProject's animated advert banner (see below).

Highfields has been filling in the currencies for each country on their respective outlines.

NuclearWarfare and Thehelpfulone have been busy with WP:AWB, posting banners and notices, and helping our sister project, the Index WikiProject, get established. Indexes work hand-in-hand with the outlines and are prominently linked to from the top of most of them. And the outlines, which serve as tables of contents, are only as good as the pages they link to.

Since we started integrating (linking) the OOK and its support pages into the encyclopedia and into the Wikipedia community, activity on outlines has been increasing. Though there's still much left to do.

But I digress. There are a couple more...

Welcome our new members! Stefan and MacMed

Stefan is building the Outline of sharks.

MacMed has joined our advanced wiki-tools team, and is currently adding links to outlines in the corresponding subject articles' see also sections.

Be sure to stop by their talk pages and say "hi".

WPOOK's advert banner has gone live!

Penubag has finished this WikiProject's animated advert banner, and it is now being displayed on the Wikipedia ads template which in turn is displayed on about 2000 user pages. Each time someone access one of those pages, there is a 1 in 184 chance of them viewing this:

If you'd like to display the banner on your userpage locked-on to the ad as above, use the following code:

{{Wikipedia ads|ad=184}}

(By the way, it's been awhile since we've barnstarred Penubag).

Watchers needed!

If you haven't already, please add the entire project's watchlist to your watchlist. Here's how:

From the edit window, copy and paste Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist into your raw watchlist.
Or go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist using Related changes and click on "Related changes" in the toolbox menu in Wikipedia's sidebar on the left hand side of the screen.

Check the watchlist every time you log on!

I forgot to mention this step above.  :)

The OOK is in 5 other Wikipedias?

I can't make heads or tails of 'em, but these links were on Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge:

Resurrected from the grave yard...

I discovered an AfD discussion on possibly the first article named "Outline of", which was called Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics, and which was created 4 years ago. Of course they deleted it. But now it has many friends, and so it has risen from the dead.  :)

See the DRV discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2009 June 7#Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics.

Recruiters needed. Drop me a note if you are interested.

Advice from the mentors

  • Astatine-210, Strdst grl, and Willscrlt - link to the outlines from the corresponding subject articles' see also sections - this is underway by MacMed (non-country outlines) and User talk:NuclearWarfare (counry outlines).
  • Astatine-210 - add a link to the outlines to the disambiguation pages of the corresponding subjects - good idea. Since "Outline" is just the type of page, not the subject, I think these might qualify for inclusion on disambiguation pages. We need someone to look into the relevant guidelines on this.
  • SimonTrew - provide a badge (userbox) for WPOOK members to add to their user pages - Penubag will have one for us soon.
  • Zachary crimsonwolf - create a card explaining outlines, and send it to everyone you know, and make it viral (by including a request for the recipients to send the card to everyone they know) - this task has been split in three:
  1. Creation of a "thank you for your interest" card which introduces (explains) outlines, to send to queriers, new participants to discussions, those who seem to be confused about outlines, etc.
  2. Creation of a thank you card / invitation to the WPOOK, to send to users we see working on outlines, including a request for them to invite others whom they think might be interested
3. Creation of an invitation to Wikignomes, with a brief rundown on the types of tasks there are for them to do on the outlines. The invitation will include a request for them to invite anyone they think would enjoy working on outlines.
  • weebiloobil - add examples to Wikipedia:Outlines - more examples will be added as suitable outlines are completed
  • weebiloobil - add a picture to Wikipedia:Outlines (it doesn't have to be relevant), to provide atmosphere and to break it up visually and add a splash of color - will do, and we'll add a caption to make it relevant, with a link to the outline on that subject. Thank you for the idea.
  • Zachary crimsonwolf - ask Jimbo Wales to bestow the award(s) for the country outlines contest, once you get it going first - we'll give that a try
  • Zachary crimsonwolf - ask everyone in the project to inform their acquaintances around Wikipedia about the OOK - will do, as soon as the cards
  • UzEE - collaborate with all the WikiProjects you share scope with - we've placed a banner on their talk pages, and have placed task notices on some. We'll be posting more tasks, and plan to create a section on contents system development and maintenance for each WikiProject page itself.
  • SriMesh - if you can't get outlines added to next year's WikiCup, then create your own WikiCup-like contest - there's 6 months left to this year to address reservations and work out the details at WikiCup. In the meantime, there's the 200-WikiProject contest, which needs input.

Hey, are you interested in creating another "super-userbox"? I'd like to clean out some old boxes from my userspace. They could also use some touch-ups (colours and the like) if you're interested. –xenotalk 04:31, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Outline collaboration #2: Outline of Gibraltar

This outline is approaching completion.

I added a bunch more links, finding them with the following Google site-specific searches of Wikipedia:

(You can use the wikicode for the links above as the basis for new searches - just replace "Gibraltar" with any other country or region name).

Request: please redirect the redlinks! (bluelinking...)

The redlinks need to be bluelinked where possible. The most useful way is to create redirects leading to the material (which is usually included in a section of an article - see Wikipedia:Redirect#Redirects to page sections. That way, when the redirect pages are replaced by the actual articles, the links will already point to the right places.

Please take a crack at it, and bluelink a few.

Thank you.

Good luck.

Have fun.

Outline update - Push push push - 06/25/2009

Work is proceeding apace...

New members
Hatnotes

The current consensus is that we can't place a hatnote leading to an outline at the top of a subject articles unless the outline being presented is of at least the same quality-level as the article.

What's next...

Improve outline quality by completing them.

Place hatnotes for the outlines of high enough quality.

Guidelines pertaining to outlines need to be updated. Outlines emerged as a class of pages only a few months ago, and most of the relevant guidelines don't cover them specifically. For example, Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists is incredibly out of date.

Invite wikignomes, wikielves, and wikifairies (all 2500+ of them) to help on the outlines .

Identify 600 more subjects with coverage extensive enough to justify outlines, create rudimentary drafts for them, and post notices to the corresponding WikiProjects and subject talk pages to help build them.

Convert outlines titled "List of" to outline articles, and add them to the OOK. There are a few hundred of these. Conversion instructions are needed.

Add a description of outlines to About Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Basic navigation, and add tips about outlines to the WP:TOTD and Tips library.

Keep up the great work!

Dear Mentor

Thank you for your previous advice.

We've been integrating the OOK into the encyclopedia. Hatnotes were rejected (until outline quality improves), but we've been adding links to see also sections.

As a result of the increased exposure due to these internal links and to banners placed on WikiProject talk and subject talk pages, contribution to outlines and participation in WP:WPOOK has increased a lot.

Unfortunately, a fair amount of opposition has risen as well. I expected some of this.

But, one of the opposers is getting very devious, using tricks like venue shopping WP:AN and WP:ANI - he has over 123,456 edits, so he has to know those were not the appropriate place to post notices of this type. It was a backhanded tactic. But not as bad as the way he presents his case - I'm finding his rhetoric very difficult to deal with.

Here's a list of the incidents and discussions regarding outlines.

What I need is advice on improving outline support pages (instructions, descriptions, etc., and how they are organized) so that editors who come into the middle of this chaos can make quick sense of outlines and how they fit into the big picture (and how they relate to the other parts of Wikipedia). There's a lot of confusion between outlines and portals, for instance.

Here's a directory of outline-related pages.

I very much look forward to your insights.

Outline Update - Exhausted - 07/10/2009

I'm sorry that I haven't been available to assign tasks lately. For the past 3 days (not including today) I've been almost totally consumed in discussions concerning the location and very existence of outlines. Today I finally broke free and got back to work on outlines. Felt good.

A great deal has been happening with outlines and behind the scenes. I just don't have time to tell you all about it this time around. Here's the best I can do...

How to watch what's going on with outlines

Phase two of outline integration (de-orphanizing outlines by adding links leading to them into article see also sections) is nearly complete. The better that outlines are integrated into the encyclopedia, the more use they will be to readers.

Due to greater exposure through outline integration, and with most of the OOK team on school summer vacation, development activity on outlines has increased a lot...

Me and the project

Hello, Strdst. Lemme start by saying that I admire your work as an editor, and everything I've seen you doing through and for the project. My contributions in the field were mostly incidental, and I'm guessing peripheral to its scope - I enjoy working on such articles, but don't know if I'll still be doing it in a month. It's not a question of me not wanting to join, it's more that I can't really commit myself to it. But do think of me as a traveling companion.

I'm not really a stickler for assessment, and, as I've said, I mainly enjoy getting the articles rated because it shows what others think of my work (I only objected to some being labeled stubs when it was not the case, and without ever assuming that it was more than an honest mistake). So I'm not really gonna pressure editors into rating them, and trust that they can be picked up from the "unassessed" category (unless there's some practical reason why I shouldn't, in which case I can change my habits).

Thank you, Dahn (talk) 16:39, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry it took me so long to respond, I can definitly go over the summaries of the books, if you still need it. I had tried doing it before, but it had been so long since I had read them that I forgot some of the plot, and I couldn't find any real detailed plot summaries online to work from, so I had pretty much forgot about it. :D I'll look it over, though. Maximum Ride

I have made several edits on the Maximum Ride page. Do you think you could check it out and maybe point to what we should kee working on? Also, I have noticed almost every article related to that series has no citations at all. But to me, they make sense, should we work on these also?ChaosMaster16 (talk) 02:13, 31 December 2009 (UTC)ChaosMaster16

Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis
