File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Johnston Hall 08 006.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 23:32, 7 July 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 23:32, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your uploads

[edit]

Sorry for all the notices above but for your recent uploads you have not provided any copyright tag showing the copyright status for each images. This is an absolute requisite. Just because you find an image on a website and there is no copyright notice does not mean the image is freely licenced either as public domain or under a creative commons licence. Unless an image is specifically noted to be in the public domain, you have to assume it is not a free image and this includes press images which are usually made available under the fair use doctrine. You may find it useful to read my image copyright information page to become familiar with some of these issues. Please stop uploading images for which you cannot provide proper copyright status. Good luck. --Ww2censor (talk) 04:11, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Johnstonhall.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Replaceable fair use File:Johnstonhall.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Johnstonhall.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hammersoft (talk) 15:52, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Jhalllogo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Jhalllogo.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Image uploads

[edit]

I note from this diff that you believe these images are available for 'public use'. However, the terms of use stipulated by the University of Guelph does not include a release under a free license. These images remain copyrighted, and as such must be used under terms of our non-free content policy. The first item of that policy says that images must not be used where a free content image can be created. Anyone can go an photograph this hall. It exists. You could do it yourself, if you can readily go there. I've re-marked File:Johnstonhall.jpg as replaceable fair use. Do NOT remove this tag again. Please follow the instructions on that page for what to do to contest that it is replaceable, rather than delete that tag. Also, since you've now noted the source of File:Johnstonfloorplan.jpg as being from this same photo repository, I've marked it for speedy deletion as the license from that source is not compatible with Wikipedia. I've marked File:Jhallwinter.jpg as missing evidence of permission because I can find no terms of use for that image. This makes that image eligible for deletion. I've re-tagged File:Jhalllogo.jpg as a non-free logo; it clearly is, and there's again no evidence that this image is available under the license you stipulated.

With respect, I think you need to learn more about copyright. You can't just grab something you found on the net and release it under whatever rights. The original author and/or rights holder holds rights to these images. These are rights that you can NOT release. Only they can.

Also, given your statement that this is part of a school project. I think you should carefully read Wikipedia:School and university projects. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:41, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Also, I've tagged File:Jhallcannon.jpg and File:Theportico.jpg as missing evidence of permission, making them subject to deletion. Just because something can be downloaded doesn't mean it's released under a free license. Billions of photos are posted on the web; they're all 'available for download' either by saving directly or screen capping them. That doesn't mean they're released under a free license. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:46, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

STOP UPLOADING IMAGES

[edit]

I understand you have a school project to do. But, Wikipedia is not a web space provided. The images you continue to upload are in violation of our policies. This has been explained to you multiple times, yet you insist on uploading new images anyways. You've refused to communicate with several people who have posted here on your talk page. You've been directed to Wikipedia:School and university projects, but haven't taken the advice there.

If you continue to persist in uploading copyright violations, it will very likely lead to a block of your editing privileges. STOP what you are doing and start working WITH us rather than against us. --Hammersoft (talk) 19:04, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Jhalllogo.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:08, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I've just saw the blocked msg from accessing this account. I also read the statements you posted regarding why I was blocked, but not only until I figured out how to even access these messages (at that point it was too late), regarding the multiple "warnings" given. I want to start off by saying that in no way was I trying to offend the wikipedia community. I am currently taking a beginner computer course and was assigned to create wikipedia article (on a temporary basis). This is more of a research challenge rather than a "learning Wikipedia" objective. I still cannot figure out how I can upload pictures without getting them removed. I've spent hours on Google and Wikipedia searching > for "image tags" that correspond to the images I have. This course ends in excatly one month from today, and that is all the time > I need for this site and these pictures to be posted, in order to have it > graded by teaching assistants and the professor. Two of my images were > retrieved from one of my group member's friends public facebook page. I > did not find how I can use these pictures. We've even emailed her asking > for permission, and she said it was ok, but how do I prove this?>> Since this is a time-sensitive issue for me, it will hurt our group in > many ways, not being able to make changes on wikipedia. I'd ask if it was > possible to have the ban lifted. I am not looking to cause harm or break > rules, I simply attempted several times to upload the pictures, trying > different tags. Since I am fairly new to actually creating things on > wikipedia, I was not aware that I had any messages from you or the rest of > the wikipedia community.>> I promise to not post pictures other than ones that have "This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license." Most of these pictures were taken by my instructor, and he has allowed them to be used publicly. Decline reason:

Whenever you have new messages a big orange bar that says "you have new messages" appears at the top of the page and stays there until you go to your talk page. If you never saw that in all the time you were editing here and you can't comprehend our policy on copyright violations then you may lack the basic level of competence required to edit here. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but based on your history and your unblock request it would seem to be the case. If you file another unblock request, could> you not> do this > over and over for > no apparent > reason>? Thanks.Beeblebrox (talk) 01:47, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

  • I would add that if your teaching assistant or professor would create an account here and communicate with us, we'd make considerably more progress. Your TA and prof should never have suggested creating an article here without first learning something about Wikipedia. You've twice been referred to Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects. Your TA and prof should both read that before assigning graded work for you to do here. --Hammersoft (talk) 01:16, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
