Hamish MacDonald (disambiguation)

[edit]

Hello. Just to let you know that as this now only has two entries - one of this name and one with a very similar name, I have tagged it for deletion using Template:db-disambig. If you have any questions about this, please let me know. Best wishes, Boleyn3 (talk) 13:21, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's the template you're looking for. :) 82.11.39.253 (talk) 20:35, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Brilliant. :D Splateagle (talk) 15:04, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Splateagle. Welcome to Wikipedia and thanks very much for your anti-vandalism efforts. Please don't take offense, but I've noticed that on at least a couple of user talk pages, you're using the level 1 warning after the editor has already received a higher-level warning (for example, this and this). This isn't a hard rule, of course, but my experience has been that it's usually customary to continue the escalation of warnings if they're close enough together in time. You may have intentionally done this, but my guess is that you simply may not be aware of the higher-level warnings, which are more strongly worded as you work your way up the line. You can read more about the various warnings here. Again, my apologies if this sounds at all condescending; that is most definitely not my intent. If I can help in any way, please feel free to drop a note on my talk page. Cheers! -- —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bgpaulus (talkcontribs) 16:58, 23 July 2010

Hi, thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. I wasn't aware that there was a custom of only escalating warnings but I'll take that onboard Splateagle (talk) 17:00, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, SE. Like I said, it's not a hard rule; each instance is a separate judgement call for the counter-vandalism patroller. I've even seen some editors who hardly warn at all. Personally, to be as consistent and fair as I can, I try to explain my actions every time I revert someone else's work, but that's just me. Also, I believe it was only a coupla months ago that I was trying to wrap my own head around all the different advisory and warning templates (I still don't yet have it all down pat) and thought I saw some familiar activity on your part. Anyway, thanks for not being offended. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 17:25, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the Public Policy Initiative Assessment Team wants You!

[edit]

Hi Splateagle,

I saw some of your contributions on an article that falls within the scope of Wikiproject: United States Public Policy, and I was hoping you would be interested in assessing articles with the Public Policy Initiative. There is more info about assessment on the 9/13/2010 Signpost. If you're interested or just curious you can sign up on the project page or just contact me. Thanks! Hi. As you recently commented in the straw poll regarding the ongoing usage and trial of Pending changes, this is to notify you that there is an interim straw poll with regard to keeping the tool switched on or switching it off while improvements are worked on and due for release on November 9, 2010. This new poll is only in regard to this issue and sets no precedent for any future usage. Your input on this issue is greatly appreciated. Off2riorob (talk) 23:49, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Corsewall Lighthouse.jpg

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your message re the image above. The original which I uploaded was sourced from Geograph here. I've looked at this image again, the links you provided and the many other images on Geograph for Corsewall Lighthouse and Killantringan Lighthouse. It seems pretty clear to me that you're right and the original Geograph image is mis-identified, and should be renamed as you suggest. Good pair of eagle eyes you have :)

Though they're very similar, key differences are: the height and proportions of the respective lighthouse towers; the horizontal banding around one tower but not the other and the different forms of the two chimney stacks on the adjoining low buildings. The image has been transferred to Commons, so I'll move it to a more appropriate title of "Killantringan _Lighthouse.jpg" over there shortly. You should be good to use it in your new article soon, pending no uproar or reversion by Commons regulars :)

Cheers --Cactus.man 21:39, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: Seems that I don't have the necessary permissions on Commons to move the file. I'll place a request for the necessary permissions and let you know. Failing that, a fresh upload to WP with correct info, or any of the other suitable images would satisfy your needs. --Cactus.man 22:08, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the update, I'll see if any of the pictures I took on my visit might be suitable for the article while you wrestle with permissions - hope it's not too problematic, if it is and you're able to remove the mislabelled file just go ahead and do that. Thanks! Splateagle (talk) 10:17, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The file has now been renamed on Commons and is available at File:Killantringan_Lighthouse.jpg --Cactus.man 17:56, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Use of non-free image File:AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2.png on Amiga

[edit]

The non-free image File:AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2.png was recently restored to Amiga by you after it have been removed for failure of our non-free content criteria policy, specifically item #10c which requires a "separate, specific non-free use rationale for each use of the item". The image still fails the 10c policy requirement and has been removed from the article again. Please do not restore this image to that article again without complying with the requirements of that policy. For more information on how to write an appropriate non-free use rationale, please consult Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline. If you have questions about this, please ask. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 13:03, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi, at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge we're striving to bring about 10,000 article improvements and creations for the UK and Ireland and inspire others to create more content. In order to achieve this we need diversity of content, in all parts of the UK and Ireland on all topics. Eventually a regional contest will be held for all parts of the British Isles, like they were for Wales and the Wedt Country. We currently have just over 1900 articles and need contributors! If you think you'd be interested in collaborating on this and helping reach the target quicker, please sign up and begin listing your entries there as soon as possible! Thanks.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:40, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing. Your participation in the contest and contributing articles on British women from your area or wherever would we much appreciated. Thanks.
