Sowder (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
the username sowder is not in use, and I am not violating any policies. it is my last name, and the name of my company. Please unblock this username.
Decline reason:
As per below. Note also that your contributions have been inappropriate. See WP:BFAQ. — Yamla (talk) 21:53, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- Wikipedia's username policy doesn't allow us to use the names of companies as our usernames. In addition to that, your only contributions before you were blocked were to create an article about your company, and the conflict of interest guidelines ask us all to refrain from writing about ourselves and our companies. If you want to help write an encyclopedia, you should choose a new username, and you should make a commitment to avoid writing about yourself or your company. Do you want a new username? What kinds of useful content unrelated to your company will you be adding to the encyclopedia? -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 21:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Request reason:
I'm sorry I did should have read more about the guidelines. My purpose was not even to promote my company, but my family name of sowder. Could I use this username and contribute only sowder name related material only? I did notice this for other surnames. Thank you.
Decline reason:
I'd find this easier to believe, but your only edits were to create an article on your company. — Blueboy96 22:17, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

- You have the right to make a second unblock request, but please don't remove the first one unless you aren't planning to make any more. Admins need to see who has already reviewed the request, and what reasoning was used. Thanks! -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 22:19, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
{{unblock|I only used the company info because that is what I started with. I have an entire genealogy project about the family name of Sowder that was my main focus. Part of the company is a non-profit organization I started when my son passed away, the Sowder Foundation. I admit fault in not fully understanding how far I could go with that relationship. My purpose was not to sell anything or the company itself, just as a memory or respectable project to further the understanding of this uncommon name. No sooner did I post that basic company info that I was blocked before even getting a chance to contribute anything else. Now I understand and will not make any mention to personal or business info, just research on the Sowder name itself. I'm not sure how I can prove this to you without being able to contribute the appropriate material. Thank you.}}

- Some people may disagree, but I don't see a real problem with your username. If your name were "Sowder Widgets, Inc." or if it were something like Intel or Microsoft that's pretty unambiguously promotional, your name would be more of an issue. That said, before anyone considers removing your block, please take a look at WP:CORP, WP:COI, WP:NOR, and WP:N. Wikipedia is not free webhosting. Articles about companies must meet corporate guidelines for inclusion. Articles about people must meet biographical guidelines. Writing about yourself, your company, your employer, etc, is strongly discouraged. Articles must contain verifiable facts, not original research - in other words, Wikipedia is not a first publisher of new ideas. If you have done a lot of research into your family's genealogy, that's great, but Wikipedia isn't the place to publish that research. Please read the guidelines that I have linked. Are there any other topics that you are interested in editing? I think this is an important question to be answered in order for this block to be removed. --B (talk) 22:51, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
