It clearly is an error. These are rankings that Collins originally published and reproduced in his encyclopedia. He wouldnt rank Sampras co-no. 1 in 1990, he didnt have 3 co. No. 1s and it says three no. 2s which is wrong. An error introduced in typesetting. I would be interested in seeing what the page said in later editions, hopefully he corrected the error. US ranking 1946

I think this top 10 ranking list might be Ned Potter's rankings for 1946, though the article doesn't specifically state they were Potter's. Probably in the November 1946 edition of A.L.T. (or possibly October).

@Tennishistory1877: You're probably right, but educated guesses aren't sufficient for an encyclopedia. I found a similar source in L'Auto ("a prominent American critic") for a different year, but didn't add it for the same reason. What bothers me is that Google has already digitized all the American Lawn Tennis volumes, but they won't be able to be accessed for decades due to copyright (I'm sure Potter et al. would be delighted their writings were living on).
