Education before technology

-everyone on the same level, The only difference would be the access to tutors and private or public education Immigrants coming here would not be at a disadvantage if they did not have access to technology -education was local or correspondence, those who had money sent kids to boarding/residential schools Private and boarding schools from $6000-64000 -students would have to be more active in their education, going to the library to research topics as oppose to getting info off the internet, go to teacher if they did not know how to do or understand something -with regards to sociological imagination troubles and issues; is that Canada is a country of immigrants. Some of these immigrants have never seen a computer in their life or have never owned a television, they come to Canada and there is an expectation that they know how to use technology. Most services are delivered with a computer. The personal contact is being removed which may pose a problem for individuals who are not familiar with technology. It also poses a problem for older immigrants who come to Canada and find out that they have to upgrade their skills in order to gain employment. Schools are increasingly using online tools for instruction, whether it is online textbooks or online discussions, or sometimes you have to hand in your work online. When your whole family is unfamiliar with technology you have to look outside of your household for assistance. These immigrants could be feeling embarrassment because they are unfamiliar with what is seen as a simple task (typing an essay, or surfing the net), worse if they are not familiar with the english language or if they do not know how to read. They would have to educate themselves on certain terms used when referring to technology. But computers are not the only issue there is also text messaging with cell phones, iPods, digital receivers, digital cameras etc. It is a whole new language that they have to learn and adapt to beside the other stressors of being in a new country.

(Give the example of my mother when she went back to school to upgrade her skills)

(I also have work books that i am going to show, teachers use to recomend it to parents for their kids to work on during the summer months if they were having trouble in certain topics)

There are other things that i am going to say but i am trying not to overlap with what other people are talking about.

Long distance education- learning outside the classroom

[edit]

i found an awesome video that basically sums up everything i was going to say....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRymi-lFHpE

id definitely reccommend watching it if youre interested in this kinda stuff.

its a lecture by a professor that talks about the introduction of open-learning, where there are online databases of information that are being developed so people can access them and gain knowledge.

he also talks about how because its open-learning through online databases....kinda like wikipedia and these types...people can translate them into any language so it would be better accessible to new immigrants or people who speak a language other than the main global languages.

i have this video ill show and them summarize based on the course material...should be good.
