User talk:Soccer-holic/Club notability criteria
Some thoughts
[edit]Firstly, just like i said here, i think we should only have league restrictions, as they are more straightforward, easy to follow, and adequately different from WP:FOOTYN, which based the club restrictions on cup events.
Secondly, is this list going to be for every country in the world, or we will make up a generic restriction (e.g. for countries with non-professional leagues) and then country-based restrictions for the most popular ones (?) or something? Thirdly, is this going to be followed when it's done instead of WP:FOOTYN or the incomplete WP:NFOOTY? Kosm1fent Won't you talk to me? 19:41, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
- I was planning to add the major leagues and see how it goes from there, though I think a general guideline is important too in order to make the league notability bars seem less arbitrary. The country-by-country basis is mainly to solve problems like the Coupe de France which is entered by thousands of teams every year, and the DFB-Pokal which is only entered by 64 teams.
- I presume this would replace FOOTYN, as I don't think NSPORTS is intended to cover the notability of sporting clubs (they fall under WP:CORP, I believe). J Mo 101 (talk) 10:48, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Purpose of this criteria page
[edit]The introduction suggests that the purpose of the page is simply to capture existing criteria being applied. Would it not be better to work towards a set of criteria that we think should be applied, although agreeing such a list will be difficult, and would need to be based on sources.Eldumpo (talk) 18:47, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
- Maybe I'm mistaken, but my understanding is that the majority feel that the criteria doesn't need changing dramatically (except the slightly over-inclusive guidelines for English football perhaps) and the page exists to clarify notability on a country-by-country basis. - When you say "...the criteria" are you referring to WP:FOOTYN? This is an essay not a guideline, and I thought the idea was to try and come up with a properly sourced list that can help to establish club notability at AfD? Eldumpo (talk) 23:14, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- That's the idea, though I'm still wondering how feasible it is, which is why I've only added a handful of countries so far. The main difficulty is knowing what sources such a list would be based on. I was thinking notable clubs would be those which are at least semi-professional, but considering the difficulty we have of defining "professionalism" at WP:FPL, maybe that's not the best approach. - Yes, I thought the idea would be to come up with revised criteria rather than summarise what's already happening, in which case the intro text should change. However, all countries on the list should have sources indicating why playing at the stated level/cup is regarded as being notable for clubs (i.e. show sample sources for some teams at that level), and some sources demonstrating why the levels below are not regarded as notable. Thus, I believe new countries should not be added to list unless sourced, and those already there should have sources added. Eldumpo (talk) 21:20, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
