The Winter storms of 2009-2010.
The Winter storms of 2009–2010 profiles the major worldwide winter storms, including blizzards, ice storms, snowstorms, and other winter events. A winter storm is an event in which the dominant varieties of precipitation are forms that only occur at cold temperatures; such as snow, hail, sleet, or a rainstorm where ground temperatures are cold enough to allow ice to form (i.e. freezing rain). The time scope is between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Very cold and/or snowy weather was reported across the Northern Hemisphere, with many severe cases being reported in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Poland, Finland, Russia, India, South Korea, China and Japan over the winter of 2009-2010. Even places that do not get more than an inch of snow on a single day, such as Texas, got up to five to ten inches and more overall.
As this occurred, unusually heavy rain hit Brazil[1], southern Bangladesh, Italy,[1] Haiti[2] and Argentina, while major flooding events and landslides hit Brazil, Peru and Uganda. A heat wave and/or unforeseen monsoon weather also hit parts of Australia.[1] Guam was hit by Super Typhoon Nida on November 29, 2009[3], and flooding and hailstorms hit southeastern Australia and Queensland in March 2010. The 'Credit crunch lunch' penomina.
The expression credit crunch lunch has been used during the Financial crisis of 2007-2008 (credit crunch) in regards to home made packed lunch that even the best paid City workers have started eating in order to save money in such a difficult period of financial crisis.
The expression has also emerged by the way pubs and cafes have started advertising their promotional offers, to encourage those people who are avoiding eating out in order to save money.
An article of The Guardian [7] analyses how the credit crunch has affected the life style of the British, mentioning how independent restaurants are struggling and discount retailers are thriving as a sign of a society that is trying to save as much as it can, even on food.

The world det crisis is going bonkers!
Credit rating agencies such as Standard & Poor's have been subject to criticism in the wake of large losses beginning in 2007 in the collateralized debt obligation (CDO) market that occurred despite being assigned top ratings by the CRAs.
Credit ratings of AAA (the highest rating available) were given to large portions of even the riskiest pools of loans. Investors, trusting the low risk profile that AAA implies, loaded up on these collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) that later became unsellable. Those that could be sold often took staggering losses. For instance, losses on $340.7 million worth of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) issued by Credit Suisse Group added up to about $125 million, despite being rated AAA by Standard & Poor's.[5]
It is also worth mentioning that Standard & Poor's apparently failed to predict the bankruptcy of all the largest Icelandic banks and a weaker position of the Icelandic Government in 2008, a country that had a very high rating until its economy suddenly collapsed.
Companies pay Standard & Poor's to rate their debt issues. As a result, some critics have contended that Standard & Poor's is beholden to these issuers and that its ratings are not as objective as they should be.
In April 2009 Standard & Poor's called for "new faces" in the Irish Government, which was seen as interfering in the democratic process. In a subsequent statement they said they were "misunderstood."[6]
On the 27th of April 2010, the Greek debt rating was decreased to 'junk' status by Standard & Poor's amidst fears of default by the Greek Government.[7]. They and also cut Portugal's credit ratings by two notches to A, over concerns about Portugal‘s state debt and public finances on the 28th of April [8]. They also hinted at the general degrading of all the PIIGS nations' credit rating in the near future. --Snow storm in Eastern Asia (talk) 16:11, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Mineral superpowers.
A mineralogical superpower is a state that has a monopoly on a valuable mineral resource like copper, nickel, gold or phosphorus, to the extent that an energy superpower has over energy sources, such as oil, gas, coal, oil shale and uranium. Australia has the world's largest Uranium reserves at 22%[9] and is the world's largest Coal exporter by short tonnes.[10]
Chile is the world's leading copper producer (30%), but the USA, Peru, Zambia, Indonesia and the People's Republic Of China also have major reserves 21 of the 28 largest copper mines in the world are not amenable to expansion. Many large copper mines will be exhausted between 2010 and 2015. The Sudbury region of Ontario, Canada, produces about 30% of the world's supply of nickel, while Russia contains about 40% of the world's known resources at the Norilsk deposit in Siberia. Other major producers are the French colony of New Caledonia, France it‘s self, Australia, Cuba, and Indonesia. Both New Caledonia, Indonesia and China have sizable untapped reserves. Australia is an major producer of nickel and copper as well as being the world's leading exporter of uranium (22%)[11]. Both China, South Africa, Russia and the USA are also major producer of gold .[12].
A threat to end or the guarantee to supply these minerals could prove politically influential in the future, just like oil has done in the late 20th and in to the 21st century.

Northern Ierland's Lagan Valley exsplained!
The Lagan Valley is an area of Northern Ireland. It is between Belfast and Lisburn. The Lagan is a famous river that flows into Belfast Lough. For a section, the river forms part of the border between the counties of Antrim and Down.
It has a number of interesting features including a towpath which runs alongside the River Lagan. The towpath is popular with walkers, runners, cyclists, dog owners etc. It is a very scenic and peaceful area and is ideal for walking, cycling etc. The towpath begins in the Stranmillis area of south Belfast and runs all the way to Lisburn. The cycle route forms part of National Cycle Route 9.
It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The AONB was established in 1965 and the greater part of it lies within the Greater Belfast area.
It is also the name of a constituency in the British and Northern Irish House of Commons covering Lisburn and surrounding areas.
The parliamentary constituency has been a Unionist stronghold [8]. The current MP for the constituency is Jeffrey Donaldson of the Democratic Unionist Party who was first elected as an Ulster Unionist Party candidate in 1997, retaining the seat in 2001. Following his defection to the DUP he retained the seat in 2005.[13]

Image galleries
Before adding further image galleries, or additional pictures to existing galleries, please read WP:IG, particularly paragraph 2. I don't think our readers will be particularly interested in photos of station car parks, lamposts, ticket machines etc. unless they are historically, architecturally or technically significant. Some of them are badly captioned: for example, in Islip railway station#Gallery, the sixth image is A picture of Islip station - but this doesn't look much like a station to me - it could be any collection of trees near a fence. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:09, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
- I fully support Redrose64 (talk). The images added to Conwy added nothing and were a visual diversion- most were not recognisable as being part of Conwy and none illustrated any part of the text. Please see Wikipedia guidance at WP:NOTREPOSITORY. In the meantime I have reverted the additions to Conwy and will be very tempted to do the same at Islip Railway Station.
Engine 6000 King George V at Swindon having just hauled the last King-hauled train from Wolverhampton and Birmingham Snow Hill (1962). Note the bell which was given to the engine when it toured the U.S. This engine is now preserved. Steam trains would be scraped under British Railways' Modernisation Plan. CO2 and ash clouds at the ready!

A picture of a Mitsubishi and LG Electronics Air conditioning unit at a Banbury shopping mall in the year 2010. Like the working classes, air-con' units work in the background, are not noticed all that often and are indispencible to modern life!
