Thoughts on your sandbox work
[edit]Hi there, thought I would reply to the message you left on Buggie's page. In answer to your question about citations, you shouldn't need to worry about working with quotes in your sandbox as long as you have cited them properly as you would for a class paper. As for your sandbox article draft, I've looked it over and have some thoughts to help you as you revise it:
- Might want to retile "Graduation Rates for Student Athletes in the United States" since you only talk about US rates.
- Article starts with some unqualified claims; it reads slightly like an apology. Need to find statistics and studies that back up these claims.
- Don't write for Georgetown or upper-level universities as you do with "intense course work of the institution"; must speak for all, or else give an example identify that you are speaking only for upper division schools.
- Be careful to qualify statements properly-- for example, you say that federal law mandates that universities reveal their graduation rates, but do you mean student athlete graduation rates? Your next sentence suggests that you mean the latter.
- Avoid speaking for students without statistics, interviews, or other sources to back it up. For example, don't say "many students feel an obligation" if you can't point to a source that gives support for that. If you can't find support, you can reword to be a factual statement that simply identifies that performance in the sport is a precondition for continued scholarship, etc.
- Sentence about student athletes getting less of an education-- need citation!
- "Studies have shown that"-- great! More of this.
Hope this helps!! Sleuthwood (talk) 15:20, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
