I am so sorry re the edit to Pervez Musharraf, I must have deleted it by accident without paying much attention (block highlight). My intent was to only remove the Meo Rajput point, as he is a known Syed as per the reference that was there. Please accept my heartfelt apology for this mistake, I am not into major blanking of pages lol. I am really shocked as to the changes myself as there are other edits? Unless I must have gone to an older edit perhaps....(very very confused myself...?!)

Pakistan’s Transition from Shia to Sunni Leadership Jump to Comments

Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was an Ismaili by birth and a Twelver Shia by confession, though not a religiously observant man. He had studied at the Inns of Court in London and was better versed in English law than in Shia jurisprudence, was never seen at an Ashoura procession, and favored a wardrobe that often smacked as much of Savile Row as of South Asia. Yet insofar as he was Muslim and a spokesman for Muslim nationalism, it was as a Shia. His coreligionists played an important role in his movement, and over the years many of Pakistan’s leaders were Shias, including one the country’s first governor-generals, three of its first prime ministers, two of its military leaders (Generals Iskandar Mirza and Yahya Khan), and many other of its leading public officials, landowners, industrialists, artists, and intellectuals. Two later prime ministers, the ill-fated Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and his Radcliffe-educated, currently exiled daughter, Benazir Bhutto, were also Shia. Feeling the wind shift in the 1990s, Benazir styled herself a Sunni, but her Iranian mother, her husband from a big Shia landowning family, and her father’s name, the name of Ali’s twin-bladed sword, make her Shia roots quite visible. In a way, Benazir’s self-reinvention as a Sunni tells the tale of how secular nationalism’s once solid-seeming promise has given way like a rotten plank beneath the feet of contemporary Pakistan’s beleaguered Shia minority.

Benazir’s father came from a family of large Shia landowners who could afford to send him for schooling to the University of California at Berkeley and to Oxford. He cut a dashing figure. Ambitious, intelligent, and secular, he was a brilliant speaker, with the ability, it is said, to make a crowd of a million people dance and then cry. His oratory manipulated public emotion as the best of Shia preachers could, and his call for social justice resonated with Shia values. His party’s flag conveniently displayed the colors of Shiism: black, red, and green. Although he never openly flaunted his Shia background, he commanded the loyalty of Pakistan’s Shia multitudes, around a fifth of the population. What he lacked in the area of regular religious observance he made up for with his zeal for Sufi saints and shrines, especially that of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, the widely popular Sufi saint of Shia extraction whose tomb is a major shrine in southern Pakistan.

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s years in power (1971–77) marked the pinnacle of Shia power in Pakistan and the high point of the promise of an inclusive Muslim nationalism. But the country that Jinnah built and Bhutto ruled had over time become increasingly Sunni in its self-perception. The Sunni identity that was sweeping Pakistan was not of the irenic Sufi kind, moreover, but of a strident and intolerant brand. Bhutto’s Shia-supported mix of secularism and populism—sullied by corruption and his ruthless authoritarianism—fell to a military coup led by pious Sunni generals under the influence of hard-eyed Sunni fundamentalists. In April 1979, the state hanged Bhutto on questionable murder charges. A Sunni general, Muhammad Zia ul-Haq, strongly backed by Sunni fundamentalist parties, personally ordered that the death sentence be carried out, even after Pakistan’s highest court recommended commutation to life imprisonment.

The coup of 1977 ended the Pakistani experiment with inclusive Muslim nationalism. Shia politicians, generals, and business leaders remained on the scene, but a steadily “Islamizing” (read “Sunnifying”) Pakistan came to look more and more like the Arab world, with Sunnis on top and Shias gradually pushed out. Pakistan in many regards captures the essence of the political challenge that the Shia have faced. The promise of the modern state has eluded them as secular nationalism has been colonized from within by Sunni hegemony.

deletion of test talk pages

Hi, you seem to be under the mistaken impression that talk pages created as a test cannot be speedily deleted. That is not true. The G8 criteria, like all "G" criteria are "General" and applies to anything.

While it is true that it is not as important to delete talk pages, as it is to delete articles, there is still benefit from deleting them. Having a red discussion tab allows users to know that nothing has been said, and they don't have to waste a click (or two if they also check the history to make sure that a real talk page hasn't been blanked as vandalism) to see what has been said on the page. Hello! I want a little help in writing a regex for finding a section heading(e.g. ==External links==). Now at least there can be four possibilities of a section heading

Thank you for supporting me, Smsarmad. This issue has been contentious, and I did cross out the poll he provided. I did this not because I didn't like the results, but because the poll was worded so as to be a push-poll, which would likely skew the results. The poll I have provided has precedent in the talk page and is neutral as to the outcome. Reasons should not be added at the poll--the voter should come to the poll already informed by the massive amounts of discussion on the issue in the current thread and in archived threads. A really good GA reviewer will help you improve the article considerably, while giving you much useful advice. If you go down the peer review route instead, which I suggest you do before going for A-class, you again need good reviewers. Very competent people to approach for either GA or Peer Review are EyeSerene (talk), Mike Christie (talk), Awadewit (talk), Scartol (talk) or Maralia (talk). They are all busy so you may have to wait. If you get nowhere, leave me a message and I'll see what I can do. Re GA review request for Frontier Force Regiment.

I noticed you haven't yet nominated it for GA - to do this, you'll need to list it on the WP:GAN page at the bottom of the correct section (History -> War and military) and add a talk-page template to the article. There are instructions at the top of the WP:GAN page if you haven't done this before, or drop me a note if you want a hand with the nom.

It may also be helpful to have a quick read through Wikipedia:Guide for nominating good articles before the nomination, as it often helps to avoid some of the more common problems we see at GA - although I haven't read your article yet, so I don't know how useful the guide is likely to be! I've had a quick read-through. I don't think GA is impossible, but a fair amount of work is needed (possibly more than would be justified by a GA hold). Most significantly, the article needs copyediting for prose and grammar, and there are a few MoS issues and referencing gaps. I'm also not convinced by the copyright licenses on some of the images where you have them tagged as 'self-made', but it looks like they've been cropped from paintings or photos (so they need to be attributed to the original source). If you'd rather, I can copyedit the article and we can work on the other things... but then I wouldn't be able to GA review as it would be a conflict of interest. There's no need to make a quick decision though - like I said, I won't be able to do much before next week anyway. Think it over, and let me know what you want to do. Copyright of a scanned image

What is the copyright status of an image which is uploaded after being scanned from a booklet. And the booklet holds no where any claim of copyright. I have added these images with a {{PD-self}} tag. Can anyone please guide me? --SMS ^Talk 03:42, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Simply scanning something in does not create a new copyright; the copyright, if there is any, is still fully held by the original author. Just because there is no copyright notice doesn't mean it's public domain; copyright is automatic and doesn't require a notice. No, there are no image credit, copyright notice nor even the publication date. It is an official booklet with two messages in start from the commanders of Frontier Force Regiment with their signatures at the end dated September 6 2002. At the inner side of the back cover it is mentioned

Our gratitude to Lieutenant Colonel Agha Masood Akram (1 FF and 15 FF) for his contribution in compilation of this booklet.

As for the other two, unless the structures pictured are no longer standing, or not open to the public, you would not be able to claim fair use, because you could take a new picture and put it under a free license.
