Welcome
[edit]I noticed your edits on Frantz Fanon. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Don't worry if you're unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia. Be bold!
The most useful page for newcomers is the tutorial. Once you are used to editing text, you may want to take a look at the picture tutorial. If you do a lot of copyedits, the Manual of Style will be very useful.
Nobody is expected to be familiar with the details of Wikipedia policies or etiquette right away. However, two basic guidelines that help make Wikipedia successful are: avoid bias and be civil. Every contribution helps Wikipedia develop great articles, while the very best become Featured Articles. Much more information can be found at the Community Portal.
When you want a laugh, drop by the unusual articles list. By the way, when on a talk page or vote page, you can sign your edit with your username and date stamp by typing four tildes (~~~~). Technical articles
[edit]Hello. I saw your edits to Hermitian matrix; thanks. A belated answer to your question on the help desk: As others have already said, articles like MV-algebra are very welcome indeed. The most important things to remember is to add references (so that we can check it) and to explain the motivation (this can only be done by people who know the stuff). Actually, quite a lot of mathematicians consult Wikipedia (or at least I'd like to think so), because it's easier than going to the library. And do drop by at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics if you have not already done so to find other mathematicians. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 18:11, 7 September 2005 (UTC)

Headings
[edit]For my money, the three articles that you cited are a bit headings-heavy. As a rule of thumb, I'd avoid sections consisting of just a short paragraph each (and especially just a line or two) — so my urge would be to combine some of the short sections, and so divide the articles into fewer but longer sections. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 16:25, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Have a nice day. --best, kevin ···Kzollman | Talk··· 19:56, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
- Your welcome. I am always worried my articles will be un-encyclopedic (plus, my grammer and spelling is miserable), as I tend to be too technical (esspecially when I'm not 100% sure what I am talking about). For this article, I tried to define the terms necessary, but I didn't give it many links, and I don't feel like the article does a good job telling the un-initiated what is up. But, as I see it, math/economics/social science topics can be very practical or very generalized in form, finding the right mix for wikipedia is difficult.Smmurphy
Dvyost RfA Thanks
[edit]Thanks for the love and support on my RfA! Rest assured that I'll do my best to wield the mop with honor and righteousness. Cheers! --Dave 14:49, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
PS Nice work on that Albert Margai article today--pretty embarrassing that we didn't have that one yet. Will an Africa Wikipedian's work ever be done? Probably not...
Merger
[edit]Seems very sensible--only two minor suggestions. First, I'm not sure you need the color-coding, but if you keep it, there should probably be a key to it somewhere on the page (or does this follow WP convention elsewhere that I just don't know?). Second, looks like SL People's Party needs to be re-wikilinked (missing apostrophe). Those are minor issues though--I think it's a good move! Kudos, --Dvyost 05:21, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, and the wikilinks to their names should avoid redirects where possible ("Milton Margai" instead of "Milton A-- Margai" etc.). But that's again just tiny stuff...
Is Heads of Government of Sierra Leone a good title? I am looking at fixing all the links to redirects, but I don't want to do it unless the title is ok. Smmurphy
- I guess try to compare it to some other African nations with similarly turbulent histories to see if there's a standard form--but it looks fine to me! --Dvyost 06:25, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
World music
[edit]The Wikiproject has always really just been me -- not many people consistently edit a large number of world music articles (there are many who work in specific areas, like the music of their home country, but not many who try to tie things together and all that). Only User:Hyacinth and User:Antandrus come to mind. If you have any questions or want to discuss something, feel free to leave a message on the project talk page. It's on my watchlist, so I'll see it there. The project can always become active no matter how long it's been basically dormant. Tuf-Kat 05:44, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Smmurphy - I wanted to say thanks for the private message you sent re my Amor Vincit edit, but I don't know how to send messages so I'll do this instead.
Thanks most of all for the hints about how to use Wiki - I'm learning slowly. The relationship between that painting and Baglione's Sacred and Profane is faily complex, and I'll put it at more length in an edit of the article on Baglione himself. But essentially, Baglione was having a go at both Caravaggio and the painter Orazio Gentileschi, and made enemies of them both. The quarrel led to the famous libel case which saw Caravaggio imprisoned for a while. Wild days in Rome back then - I wonder if modern New York isn't very similar?
You seem to have a very wide range of interests - I'm impressed!

Africa COTF
[edit]Hey Smmurphy,
Since you've been doing such nice work on the African COTF lately, I thought I might tip you off that I probably won't be that active there any more--not that I don't like the project, but my teaching has been keeping me too busy to do the research I need to for the longer articles. (I still pop on every now and again to write a stub off of List of Missing Africa Topics but that's about it for me). So the COTF is going to need somebody new to switch it over--not that it's an official position, this is wiki after all, but since I've done it the last few times I wanted to warn someone capable (such as yourself) to keep an eye on it.
Thanks for all the work you're putting in over at Black Consciousness Movement! It's exciting to see the COTF up and running again, and with such great results coming out of it... Kudos!
--Dvyost 06:12, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up, I'll be on the lookout. I'm a lot more interested in social movements (especially Fanonian) and such than culture/anthropology/geography stuff, so my work at Black Consciousness Movement is hardly representative of how much I would work at all African COTFs (see Gnawa), but I can certainly keep an eye on the main COTF page. Peer Review
[edit]Firstly, the article is looking fantastic thanks to your (and others) efforts. I've been doing some research on the art side of things and I dont think there is an awful lot I can add on that subject. On the Literature section? Well, IMHO, it is looking good, well expanded, but a little red if you know what I mean? Tonight and tomorrow maybe, I hope to try and clean up that section a little. As far as peer review goes, I am all for it, but I would like to give the article a little longer. Cheers Banes 07:48, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
- I put the article up for WP:AID. I thought that might be a better route to head down instead of a peer review, with that coming after the nomination lives or dies. Hopefully you'll support the nomination, or discuss this at the article's talk page. Thanks. Harro5 11:29, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

- I wasn't at all surprised that my edit on Biblical inerrancy got reverted - it added nothing to the article. I added it because the argument in that particular section was so odd - essentially saying that God made prophesies without knowing what He was saying. But my real feeling about the entire article is that it's way too long and gets way off topic - there should indeed be a Wiki article on the subject, but it should just stick to describing the basis of the belief that the Bible doesn't err, and not get into arguments intended to prove the hypothesis. But the people who take an interest in such matters are not likely to take the more detached approach, so I'll just let it rest.PiCo 22:13, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Hi Smmurphy. Recently I've been randomly boucing around the wiki tagging articles with {{unreferenced}} and dropping {{unref-talk}} on people's talk pages. - Right, but I would think he's a alt (sockpuppet, if you must) of a member (or friend) of SIIEG who doesn't want retribution for "getting out the vote" on a controversial delete while still letting people know what's up. I'd give him the benifit of the doubt simply because most members of SIIEG havn't piped in, yet. Black Consciousness Movement
[edit]Hi smmurphy,
I hope you are not offended by my comments on the BCM talk page. I have been reading the article and find some of it difficult to reconcile with my recollection. Because the links seem to refer back to other wiki articles, it is cumbersome to follow the trail to where this information is coming from. This really should be a non-controversial subject, so I don't want to make waves.
But here is my difficulty.
While it is no doubt true that the term "Black Consciousness" originated with Du Bois, and found expression in the work of Marcus Garvey, and was refined by theorist such a Fanon, Césaire and Senghor, it is not clear that the BCM in South Africa was overly influenced by these people. It seems to be more localized than that, and more likely was an extention of the work of Sobukwe, more than anything else. Even though Steve Biko on several occassions quotes Césaire in his writing, it is clear from it that the developement of BCM as a Students movement was directly influenced by the reality of Student politics in South Africa, and BCM rhetoric never ascended the heights of the in-your-face 'Black is Beautiful' movement of the United States.
After reading a few articles by American Scholars, there seems to be a tendency to frame the movement relative to the parrallel movement in the States and elsewhere. I don't think the link was that strong. South Africa was extremely isolated, and news censored. Books by these intellectuals were banned, and possibly only available in select University Libraries, for restricted use. South African sources rarely mention these people at all. Except, that is, Azapo and similar remnants that relatively recently attempt to reframe the ideological basis of the Movement.
How do we deal with this?JohD 13:56, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- Please have a look at recent changes by a new user to the page, which is essentially adding an academic paper on the end. Harro5 06:37, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I noticed, and asked the user to cite the sources. They are a new user and they have had a fair record, so I'm enclined to assume good faith for a little while. The user responded quickly to my request to cite, so the more constructive criticism we can give, the better for the user. I am personally inclined to let the user try to pair down the analysis to something that fits in with an encyclopedia article before I get my hands dirty. But I'm keeping my eye on it. [edit]I have created {{RnB-song-stub}} to sort R&B, soul music, and funk song articles. Architecture of Africa - new AID collaboration
[edit]Question regarding Berbers in Algerian war for independence
[edit]Some major Berber (Kabyle) figures in the revolution include:
and, on a non-military front, the Mzabi Moufdi Zakaria who wrote the national anthem. You could start by searching for more information on them.
I'm afraid I don't know of any good general survey of Berber attitudes to the revolution, but my understanding is that the Kabyles and Chaouis (the only two large Berber communities) were both quite enthusiastic about it, and their areas' mountainous terrain was ideal for guerrilla warfare. There was some conflict between Berberist and pan-Arabist ideologies during and after the revolution, but both extremes were united around the common need to expel the French.
As for the current conflict, the two main Kabyle parties are the FFS and RCD; both are secularist, but the former has heavily criticised the government for the manner of its repression of FIS and has participated in talks with FIS, whereas the latter's only objection seems to be that the military didn't kill enough fundamentalists. It is noteworthy that FIS never made any significant progress in the most heavily Berber areas of Kabylie and the Mzab, although I don't know the story for the Chaoui areas. That's probably about all I can tell you; Berber (mainly Kabyle) beefs with the government center on issues that have little direct connection with the civil war. - Mustafaa 16:44, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
As you are a member of the WikiProject Business and Economics, your help is kindly requested in the section of the AIDS article linked to above. Any help would be appreciated. --Bob 18:35, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

c-r link
[edit]As Femto said, I have no issue with you re-adding the link; I have no intention of removing it from that article. My "task" was to remove the spam. If you as a neutral 3rd-party feel it's a useful link for that particular article, as far as I'm concerned it's no longer spam. Cheers --AbsolutDan (talk) 01:42, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up, I have replied there. 05:02, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Note that it'd be preferable that you actively add any link which you support adding. Simply not removing a link, or stating your general support is too vague for keeping links that were added by a suspected spam account. Femto 12:28, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message Smmurphy, This is all very Kafka-esque to me :) and a certain eye-opener in regards to people's virtual interactions, has it really come to this (see above) when the only point really is whether people would benefit from reading the primary texts and agreements? The main accusation that this is blatant self-promotion I concede may have some value in addition that my actions on wikipedia probably suffer from the same Kafka-esque inability to know what form to get stamped where by whom and how! The point though being is not to sell anyone anything (Viagra, stock or penis enhancements etc)but rather provide a gateway where people can see how actors in conflict managed to tweak out their disagreements and hopefully draw some parallel lessons from other peace processes. CR is a trusted and unbiased not-for-profit source that gives those who are interested access to primary documents as well as analysis on the peace processes in question, a rather benign mission in my opinion and again nobody is making monetary profits at any point (the peace business is regrettably less profitable than the war business). In the final analysis though, I give up, apparently I am a spammer and really an unfortunate 'victim' of overzealous guardians who while doing a good job of sifting out weed also in my opinion manage to slaughter some pretty flowers, but hey hope someone else gets what information CR is providing and makes the links where appropriate.
All my best, good luck and adios, Hjalmarsson
Sure, I don't disagree with your opinion of the links themselves. In addition to this username, he's also used User:Dr.peter, User:87.80.112.199, and a few others I think. It might take a bit of cross-referencing to track it all down. If your re-additions of the link raise any red flags with other spam-fighters let me know and I'll make a post about it at WP:WPSPAM. --AbsolutDan (talk) 16:01, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. Looking at the links, its a lot of articles that I don't know much about and are probably being watched by a few other's, so I'm not going to try to add the link back to an article like, say, peace or Angola. I'm not sure it would belong, anyway. I was thinking that their would be articles at the pages of the individual conflicts, which I would support, as that site is one of the best for having text of agreements, etc. I've added back the link a couple places, but I'll err on the side of inaction and stop now. [edit]I recently came across your name as the first entry on the Kissi Language page history. Were you the original creator of that page?
I spent two years in Gueckedou prefecture as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1988-90 and lived there among the Kissis. It looks like you may have had some first-hand experience there as well. Would you care to share it with me?
Thanks - John —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrharper (talk • contribs)
- The page looks a lot better now, but yeah, I think I started that one. No, I haven't been there; I studied the area working on my master's degree. Welcome to Wikipedia, by the way. Articles on Africa are among the least developed around here, so editors interested in Africa are always encouraged. Way cool someone wrote something about the Kissis. I've grown up in Kissidougou and come back to Switzerland (I'm Swiss) in 2003. Thea (musician)
[edit]I deleted the article, because as you pointed out, it was a straight copy from another website. Therefore was a copyright violation and had to be deleted from Wikipedia. -- Gogo Dodo 05:37, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't make myself clear. The fact that it was taken from another source shows that the author was likely close to Thea, and very possibly the same author as the pdf I linked to. Its not a copyright violation if the author releases it, and putting the article up for deletion seems to me to smack of wp:bite. The speedy tag was for non-notability, thus the question of copyright had not been raised or addressed (it wouldn't have been hard to reqrite the article based on the material provided, had that been the issue). Smmurphy(Talk) 07:13, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
- Re your message: I removed the copyrighted text again. While you suspicion that the anonymous IP knows Thea is probably correct, that does not mean that Wikipedia can accept the text because it is copyrighted and no copyright release has been made. While Thea may or may not be notable enough for an article, the copyright violation overrides that. I do agree that if the article was rewritten without the copyrighted text, then an AfD would be appropriate if her notability was questioned. On a side note, thanks for clearing up my confusion from earlier. I wasn't aware that you copied the text into a new article, so I was confused when you were referring to an anonymous person on the Talk page when you created the article. -- Gogo Dodo 04:18, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

- Let the user decide if he/she wants to release the images under a free license. If the user decise not to release them under a free license, the images will not be usable for wikipedia and will be candidates for speedy deletion. --bluemask (talk) 07:20, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Rice/Poindexter Case
[edit]I couldn't find the original report on the FOP's main website. All I could find was a reference to it on the South Carolina FOP branch. It's only a few paragraphs, but I suppose it's better then nothing.

[edit]Hi, Smmurphy!
Thanks for your comments at this AfD. I saw your name there, stopped by your user page to learn more about you, and was surprised by a small grammatical error (in the orange box in the top right corner). I thought of fixing it myself, then decided that a brief message here would be more appropriate. Have a great day! ;^> DavidCBryant 13:41, 19 February 2007 (UTC) Thanks, I (hope I) found it. Smmurphy(Talk) 17:24, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, you found it. If we were better acquainted I might have just hopped in and fixed it myself. But I reined myself in, because I tend to be too assertive that way. :-) Oh – I have no idea who coined the phrase "collective insomnia", but I like it. And here I thought I was the only one who arises at 4:00 am to fiddle with this stuff! DavidCBryant 19:13, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Hey there!
[edit]I noticed last year that you weren't around much. It's good to see you pop up on my watchlist again! Cheers, BanyanTree 17:30, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Heh, I didn't even mark myself as "on wikibreak." I'm on a fairly different lifetrack now, so my edits will be a little bit different, but I've been trying in the last few days to see what's been going on in the WP-Africa community. Things have changed, eh (and Esperanza was shut down!? wild). Hopefully the new project makes us more productive, it seems to divide our attention more than focus it, no. Anyway, thanks for the welcome back (you've now welcomed me twice!). Smmurphy(Talk) 19:38, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
