Thanks -- Didn't know about that one. But shouldn't it be "4ft8.5in" ;-)

Good Articles

Actually, we have tried a method using subpages in the past. I continue to manually synch Wikipedia:Good articles/Trains for transclusion on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains page. Slambo (Speak) 13:03, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Why was the subpage idea abandoned?--Mcginnly | Natter 01:45, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Milwaukee Road EP-2

Thanks for the suggestions on the Milwaukee Road EP-2 page. I made some additions and changes to the text as you recommended and added a few more references. I don't have a photo of the Bi-polar at the museum in St. Louis; there are a few good photos of it online but as a newbie I don't know much about "fair use." Any suggestions? Categories on redirects

Those redirects were categorized because they shouldn't be redirects. (They should at minimum be stubbs.) I put them in the category where they ought to be to make this clearer. --cfp 16:00, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

"Citation needed"

Hi there.

I've just deleted a couple of defamatory revisions from E. Hunter Harrison, after we recieved a complaint about them; I note that you marked them as "citation needed". In future, do feel free to rip such things out on sight and leave an edit summary saying "please give citation if re-adding" or something like that; even if they were true, we'd be on pretty thin ice if we can't attribute the claims to someone. [1] is a pretty good short summary; WP:LIVING goes into more detail.

Thanks for spotting them and marking them, but please don't hesitate to just remove stuff like that as a first course of action in future. Better no article than an uncited but defamatory one... Shimgray | talk | 09:42, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Braunton Road/Chumhill railway accidents

Hi Slambo, I noticed you have removed {{British heritage railways}} from the two items about accidents on the L&B. Is this because I'd used the category incorrectly, or has the usage changed? Many thanks, Lynbarn 10:29, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Slambo, thanks for explaning - it all makes sense to me now! (well a bit more of it does, anyway!) I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. Lynbarn

Railroad Maps

Thanks for tagging Juniata Valley Railroad and Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad as needing maps. I am working on maps for the 8 PA shortline articles I made, and have put one up so far, for Lycoming Valley Railroad. The map itself is at Image:Lycoming Valley Railroad Map.PNG. It is taken from the factfinder.census.gov website and modified by me - is this OK? If so I will make this style for the 7 others (UCIR is almost done). If not, I can't really make better maps as I do not have mapmaking software. Thanks, Ruhrfisch 21:33, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the quick response. I still use Paint (ugh agreed) so I will try the GIMP. I will also remove the map tags as I put them up and am slowly working on improving the 8 articles. Take care, Ruhrfisch 02:27, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Prettytable

I am just curious as to why you have changed the tables on various pages about British Rail locomotives into something that is an eyesore.Jsp3970 14:26, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure if you know this or not but prettytable has been deprecated. I wouldn't have noticed what you had done if it hadn't been for the fact that it seemed to have gone wrong on the British Rail Class 71 page. I do agree that there needs to be a standard table format and when I orignally created those tables I looked around to see what the best style would be. (Don't worry I am not harping about this because I created the tables, but because as I already said in at least one case it seems to have failed.) As for the Wikitrain project it seems like a good idea to me, although I am not yet sure of the scope of the project. Perhaps you could be kind enough to explain just what you plan to cover, just loco's, or rolling stock, stations, subways, etc.Jsp3970 17:41, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I was wondering if you might be able to offer some comments on my new WP:COUNCIL project. Feel free to tell me to get lost if you have better things to do, though.  ;-) Thanks! Kirill Lokshin 17:50, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I've moved your advice on template sizes over to Wikipedia:Navigational templates, which deals with the templates as they are used in articles; hopefully you won't be too angry with me? ;-) Kirill Lokshin 21:02, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Trainswikiproject rating

Hi.

I notice you have been adding Trainswikiproject templates and ratings to the talk pages of quite a number of pages on my watchlist over the last few days (weeks?). Not a few of those articles are ones where I am a/the major contributor.

Having looked at a few of them again, I'm struggling to understand the rating system you are using. In some cases you have rated articles as 'start class' which I have always perceived as better efforts than articles you have rated as 'B class'. The table in Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains/Assessment that the template references looks very pretty, but if you actually read it with the intent of finding out what you need to do to improve an article from (say) 'start class' to 'B class', it is completely useless.

I'm all in favour of an assessment mechanism provided it is transparent, and at least indicates what the opinion of the assessor is on what should be done to improve the article in question. But this process seems to be completely opaque to anyone but the assessor; it simply leaves everyone else scratching their heads and wondering what it was based on. Therefore the only possible benefit to Wikipedia is if the assessor intends to come back and improve the articles themselves. Given the volume of articles, this seems very unlikely.

Am I missing something somewhere. An audit trail perhaps. -- Chris j wood 13:57, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Template:LabourProject

Hi Slambo. Thanks for catching my mistakes on the LabourProject template. I thought I had had changed all the rail references over, but I guess I missed a couple. Cheers.--Bookandcoffee 13:10, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

If you want to leave them for a few hours, I have time later today and I'll run through them with AWB...--Bookandcoffee 13:25, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello, director.

I have added a paragraph to the Texas Mexican Railway in my last edit to the same. The source of the information contained within is a magazine. Could you please put in a proper citation like you did not long ago when I incorrectly referenced a web page? Then I could again learn how it is done. Here is some information:Classic Trains Special Edition No. 4, 2006. Article is "Just Who Was the Fitst to Dieselize?" by J. David Ingles. Copyright 2005 Kalmbach Publishing Company, Waukesha, Wisconsin. Many thanks in advance!--MrFishGo Fish 12:16, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Passenger Trains

Hello I have been working on the train pages and would like your imput on how I am doing and what I can do to make it better. I feel that I am doing a great job so far. I am interested in passenger trains. You can look at my history and see what I have done so far. John R G 04:45, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Page moves

Odd I'm moving them from a directory that lists subpages (or at least, it's suppposed to), so I should have seen that. I appreciate the heads-up, and I'm taking a look to make sure that nothing else got overlooked. Thanks much. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 14:07, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Subpages After I get done with the main namespace, I'm going to talk next; just so you know. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 14:48, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

BGCM edits

I tried looking for some sort of template for a new railroad entry, but was not successful. Such a thing would make it easy to simply fill in the blanks, or delete them if the information is not available. In lieu of a template, please recommend an entry that has all the needed information and I will use it. I have lots of UP predecessors and Utah railroads to add. I could put them all on my own web site, but I like how Wikipedia is interconnected. Also, is there a template for a good user page that I can use, so that anyone can see my interests and background. United States/U.S./US

I was not aware that the article title I changed was a "canonical" example of where abbreviations should be used, else I'd not have moved it (although I do stick by the opinion that United States is better than U.S. and US is just plain ugly...but, as few other people seem to agree/care, I will refrain from making such moves in the future.) Thank you for pointing this out. Regards, Paul 19:02, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Just a quick note, I did in fact update all (at least, I think I got all) of the would-be double redirects. Paul 19:03, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I've completely re-written this article, so you may want to change the stub classification in the project tag. -- Tivedshambo (talk) 21:16, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Minnesota railroad maps

I'm going to start working on some maps of the Minnesota short-line railways, such as Twin Cities and Western Railroad, Minnesota Northern Railroad, St. Croix Valley Railroad, and some of the others. I've already done Progressive Rail and Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Railway.

I'm starting to become familiar with GIS tools (i.e. Quantum GIS), and I have datasets from Minnesota, so I'll start here. I haven't found all of the GIS shapefiles that have stuff like actual geographic names, so I'm not fully up to speed, but I'm hoping I'll get there eventually. I just thought I'd let you know that I'm working in the Minnesota area so you don't go to the extra effort, or whatever. --Elkman - (Elkspeak) 04:10, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

History of rail transport in Poland

I have been doing some copy-editing on this article. Not really because I'm a railroad fan, but becuase I found it in the list of articles requiring copy-editing. I hope I am not breaking any conventions by doing this outside of the official project. Peashy 12:19, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
