Legends of Hampshire

Thanks for your additions to Bramshill and support. Legends of Hampshire might be an interesting article. There you could go into detail on the numerous legends. I think detailed content on legends is OK in the right context, and certainly makes interesting reading, but in articles on architectural pieces it really shouldn't be more than a basic summary. There's nothing wrong with the sourcing in the Bramshill article, and am pretty sure the others would agree.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:41, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Doc, I hope it gets through - in my opinion, giving broad coverage to a subject includes legends/folkloric aspects. Unfortunately, some people read "ghost" and automatically thing it is a claim of paranormal, rather than simply relating the stories told about the place - and Bramshill looms large in Hampshire folklore. The publisher is a decent one, and I used that book in particular because it is from a solid series on county folklore, rather than using my collection of "Hampshire Ghosts" type titles. All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 13:26, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks!

Your work on Maya civilization is amazing. Really impressive. Do you think it might make sense to have a section on linguistic and ethnic diversity among the Maya perhaps with a map of the different Mayan languages and the time frame for their development, as well as some information about which languages are represented in the hieroglyphic writing?·maunus · snunɐɯ· 16:46, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

You know, I had thought about putting in something about languages, particularly the languages of the inscriptions - in the end I didn't, because I knew I had so much to cover and was worried about space. Now that the bulk of the article is in place, I may revisit the idea - it now seems like an omission. Simon Burchell (talk) 20:31, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
I am sure most Mayanists wouldnt notice it was missing, but it stands out to a linguist. Also you do use some of the langauge names as ethnonyms but never give an introduction to the diversity. I think a map would be good. But it is not a big gap, and you can easily pass GA without it I would say.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 20:35, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
I've dropped in a short section just before the bit about Maya writing, with map of language migration. Simon Burchell (talk) 00:03, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
Amazingly beautiful article, agreed. Definitely a future FA, I'd guess though given the complexity of it and your personal knowledge of the possibilities you still want to work on it a fair bit though. If you ever want a hand in promoting something let me know. It's great to see work on the more general core articles, you too Maunus with English language. Out of the Maya sites I'd like to see more GAs I think. Glad to see my infobox and map is still in use BTW! Fancy that, me creating an infobox :-) I miss your italicized capitals for authors BTW Simon, I always thought it looked more professional but I guess the MoS lot picked up on it eventually!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:49, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Doc. Actually it wasn't MOS, it was the CS1 gods rolling out undiscussed changes to the citation templates (OK, they were discussed in some obscure corner that no-one but CS1 programmers ever reads). As a result, I've dumped use of citation templates for new articles, and will continue with the smallcaps for as long as I can... I hope to keep rolling out Maya GAs from time to time - and your infobox certainly isn't forgotten! Actually, I've been working on Spanish Conquest articles for so long, coming back to work on the pre-Columbian Maya was refreshing - I think it may have given me a push back towards producing more of those Maya site GAs. Best regards, Simon Burchell (talk) 21:38, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
You may like to know of this citation template using LSA style: Template:Cite_LSA. ·maunus · snunɐɯ· 00:07, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Maunus, that's really helpful. I'll give the template a try, and hope it will be more stable than {{cite journal}} etc. I'm still quite annoyed at the underhand way in which smallcaps was removed from a large number of articles. Simon Burchell (talk) 08:10, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Cuello - additional citations for verification?

Frankly, I find it a little strange that, for such as a small section (Cuello#Ceramic chronology), 2 valid refs are still not enough. But be it as it may... Eio-cos (talk) 16:07, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

@User:Eio-cos: Please read Wikipedia:Citing sources, particularly the 2nd paragraph of the introduction - all material should be cited. If all the text you added came from the two refs, then an inline ref should be added as appropriate. If everything in an individual paragraph cames from the same reference, then add <ref>Cited source with page no.</ref> at the end of the paragraph. If the material is drawn from various sources, then add the <ref>Cited source with page no.</ref> at the end of each sentence.
With the gradual accumulation of information on Wikipedia pages, anything unreferenced may be removed at any time. Your additions are most welcome, it is just a matter of making sure that any piece of information can be verified. If you look at most of the rest of the Cuello article, you will see that just about everything is sourced. All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 17:12, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
I understand your concern, Simon, about everything being clearly referenced. I can only add in my justification that the links that I placed in that section are hotlinks; in other words they can be easily checked by going to Google books, for example, and finding more info. Whereas the other links that you mention are refs to books that may be difficult to find without access to a large library. All the best. Eio-cos (talk) 13:02, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
@User:Eio-cos:I think possibly you misunderstand me, it is not the quality of the links that are the problem; it is the amount of text that does not have proper attribution. I have copied your added text below. According to Wikipedia referencing guidelines, everything I have struck out is unreferenced and could be removed at any time, without further justification than that it is unreferenced, which would be a pity, when adding a cite would not be difficult:

Your text

The ceramic chronology of Cuello is believed to be as follows, needs cite here to cover all the phases that immediately follow

*Swasey phase: 1200-900 BC

  • Bladen phase: 900-650 BC
  • Lopez-Mamom phase: 650-400 BC
  • Cocos phase: 400 BC - 250 AD.

The earliest Cuello pottery found so far is of the Swasey type, starting at about 1200 BC.[1] The parallels to this type of pottery elsewhere in northern Belize are lacking. Nevertheless, the Bladen complex ceramics, dating between 900 and 650 BC, are already found widely throughout northern Belize. needs cite here

There's a lack of close similarity between Swasey ceramics and the early pottery-producing areas on the Pacific Coast, the highlands of Chiapas, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Thus, the origins of Swasey ceramics remain unclear. needs cite here

While the known Xe ceramics of the Pasion River drainage date from the similar time period, there are significant differences between these and the Swasey/Bladen ceramics.[2] Xe, or Real/Xe ceramics are found, for example, at Seibal in the Peten department of Guatemala. needs cite here

Thank you for your concern, Simon. In the future, I'll try to work better. Yet I'm just one imperfect man, whereas Wikipedia has millions of editors. I just hope that others will come after me and continue to improve these articles, attaining perfection. Eio-cos (talk) 18:54, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
