Question for administrator

[edit]

{{adminhelp}} Hi. I've been wondering if you can help me out with this. See, I have no attention of advertising our company's project. However, just like Second Life, we'd like to tell the world about what Trillenium is. I've read the detailed description on Second Life here in Wikipedia and I can't seem to understand the reason you've deleted my short page about Trillenium. Isn't Second Life's page a kind of an advert,too? Thanx --Shop&socialize (talk) 08:30, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I'm not an administrator, but perhaps I can be of assistance. I suggest that you read up on the general notability guideline and the guideline WP:CORP. Entries in Wikipedia must be notable and worthy of being included in an encyclopedia. I'm not saying that your company does not meet that standard, but these guidelines should be able to help you understand what is expected. Please note that Wikipedia is not for "telling the world" about something. Wikipedia is meant to be a collection of encyclopedic information. Hopefully those guidelines can help you understand this better. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions. Regards. --Shirik (talk) 08:58, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm an admin, but I basically came to simply confirm what Shirik said above. Since Wikipedia is not simply a directory, the main guiding criteria for whether or not something is kept or deleted on an encyclopedia like Wikipedia is primarily the notability guidelines for inclusion.
In your case, the notability guidelines for the inclusion of web sites and web content are likely to be the most specific and pertinent to this situation. Second Life has an article on Wikipedia because Second Life was notable under those guidelines before the article on Second Life was created. It did not work the other way around—that is, Second Life didn't create an article in order to help make itself notable. Put another way, it didn't have a bunch of independent secondary sources talking about it because it was on Wikipedia—it got on Wikipedia because a bunch of independent secondary sources were talking about it.
Please also have a look at our conflict of interest guidelines, a guide on creating your first article, and our advertising policy. We've also got a canned sort of introduction/welcome template that has some important/informative links for getting around on Wikipedia that I'll stick below to help with some of the other common ones.
Cheers =) --slakrtalk / 09:22, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
