Voting for Biography collaboration of the week

Hi, the article Sheikh Hasina has been nominated for voting at "Biography collaboration of the week". J Das

Hi there,

Nice to see the Bangla script on J Das's name!

However, JD's last name is spelt with a "talebosh-sho", not a "dontosh-sho" -- this is also how it is spelt on the official edition of his "Kobita Shomogro." Would you be able to put in the correct "sho"?

Interesting, I think I saw his name spelt with "donto-sha" rather thatn "Talobbo-sha" as Periapatetic suggests. Usually, the surname Das is written with Donto-sha in Bangla, and I think most of the copies of his books I saw, had donto-sha. Of course, I saw some pirated versions of his books with the Talobbo sha spelling. So, ppm, what do you think about that? --Ragib 01:26, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Lalon.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Bangla names

Thank you for your works on Satyajit Ray. Let alone FAC, I have been trying to make it an Indian selected article for some time but not yet succeeded. It's not a single-man job. Help needed

Hi ! I need some help. This regards the reference method. After working in Bangladesh, you have become adept at how to cite in the Harvard style. I simply could not understand the way. I see you have done it in Satyajit Ray. Of you have time, could you please spend about half an hour (max) to help the references cited in Kolkata arrange in the Harvard style ? I am adding some critic's comment in the section "Critical reception". Ar first, as you pointed out in the discussion page, rhe comments may seem somewhat disjointed as weel as unnecessary. Hi! I started to read the biographical writting of Bijoya Ray when it started appearing in "Desh". But soon could not but discontinue. The biography was so peculiarly "feminine", if I may use the term! I mean almost all the time there were talks about who was who (the relatives), which lady was beautiful, where they did marketing, how poor were they, how beautiful was Sandip in infancy, how Bijoya Ray gave birth to Sandip without feeling a little bit of labor pain, how mrX or MrY came to meet the family and what gift did they bring, and in which corner of the drawing room did Bijoya placed that adorable gift - OMG!

Of course, scattered in between those irritating stuff were invaluable comments. Unfortunately, I do not have those issues of "Desh" now. it would have been great if we had such an interesting bit of info like the alleged affair! Year problem

I was thinking exactly the same thing when editing! So far as I remember, I previously edited the filmography and made the previous complete form. And I copied the filmography from some other source, of course. Have to check out if something wrong happened then!

User bn template

Hi ppm,

Refer to {{User bn}} and its sub-templates. It uses the word "ব্যবহারকারী", which I feel is quite less popular (in my opinion). I contacted a few Bengalis and even some of them didn't knew there was any such word. I feel that it should be changed to either "সদস্য" or "উপযোগকর্তা". I wanted your opinion on this. Also, I realized that bengali rendering was a problem with my settings and if you want, you may change the font size in Bangladesh to how it was initially.

Sorry to get into the conversation, but actually, this is the standard term used in the Bangla wikipedia. The last example you said, "উপযোগকর্তা", isn't even a common word (I am yet to see it ever used in a book other than the dictionary). But ব্যবহারকারী is widely used in media. --Ragib 16:06, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

If its a standard and accepted term then this is not an issue. I am myself not a Bengali so I don't know enough. Why it struck me was because I had never heard of "ব্যবহারকারী" before. The English user templates say "This user is...", which translates to "উপযোগকর্তা", while in Hindi it goes like "इस सदस्य..." which translates to "সদস্য". সদস্য means member, not user. A user someone who uses something. Use = ব্যবহার. user = ব্যবহারকারী. This is a widely used term, even in spoken Bangla and written text. But I've never really heard of the term উপযোগকর্তা *anywhere*, not in spooken or written Bangla. I guess ব্যবহারকারী is the most commonly used term which convey the meaning. But anyway, I'll discuss it with other admins in the Bangla wikipedia, where we actually use the namespace ব্যবহারকারী , reperesenting the user namespace. Thanks. --Ragib 18:00, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the insight guys, but you don't have to take this so seriously. As I have said, I am not a Bengali myself and "উপযোগকর্তা" can at best be said as my Original Research. Its just that I asked a few other Bengalis and they told that "উপযোগকর্তা" will be a valid Bangla word. This does not mean that it is being used anywhere else. I was motivated to raise this issue by a friend who never heard either "উপযোগকর্তা" or "ব্যবহারকারী" and told that he would prefer the former. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:17, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi,

The Summary is still required but there's a problem. After I didn't get any response in a week's time, I decided to do it myself. However, the trouble is that all the images used in the article are Fair-use and hence unsuitable to appear on the portal page. It is always advisable to have images accompanying articles on the Main Page (of the Portal). Hence I gave up writing the summary. Still, I will appreciate if you could do it. About Barendra Museum

Hi Shmitra, Thank you for your hard work on the above mentioned article. But as far as I know, the actual spelling is Varendra Research Museum, The museum doesnot have their own website. But they use this spelling. If you have any copy of Banglapedia (English Version), then you may look for it. Mr. Saifuddin Chowdhury, Director of the museum, was also a contributor of Banglapedia. I do not have any idea about the images. Ok, I shall try to build up a template containing films and literature. However, due to massive volume of works, the template might be a large one. Could you please see this provisional template? I started to build it. However, the cinema portion does not look aesthetically good. Also, more info can be incorporated in the literature part. For example, short stories and poetry, sandesh etc have not been mentioned in the template, just a link to the article Literary creations of Satyajit Ray has been given. Re:Organization

Hi - I think the organization is messed up - becoz you deal with personal life separately from the work, I think it chronological disorders the biography, especially when you go over a period, say 1950-60 three separate times for personal life, film career and writing career. Also, as I said that "Pather Panchali" subsection deal more with the film and should be integrated, not segregated in Ray's biography. Case in point is that the film career directly proceeds to reception, and at the bottom is his literary career - why the relegation?

I suggest the following format: (a) Early life (b) Early film career (c) Middle film and literary career (d) Late career/international works/unfilmed (e) Reception/criticism (f) Death and commemoration. Integrate personal life between the works. After all, Ray was a writer, filmmaker and even composed music. This illustration of Ray's genius across his life must flow in a stream - for example the literary career begins with a work in 1961, so what was he doing in that skill area for 40 years before that? How come the sudden switch to writing in between his filmmaking. If you create a chronology-based organization, readers will find it easier to categorize Ray's mind, personality and character as it evolved through various decades. For example, if you mention about Ray's political/social outlook amidst Bengal's communist upheaval in his personal life, and then mention his work related to that two sections later...Its iffy.

Integrate filmcraft into respective sections, as well as reception/criticism. For the problem of pictures - I know its hard to work without FU images, but the problem with the FU images you use is that doesn't meet the FU criteria, becoz it doesn't illustrate the object in question - a movie poster is for the film, not Ray. FU images must exclusively illustrate Ray. Plus, the number of FU images should be reduced in general to avoid dependence. Above all, whatever FU images you decide to go with, must have a rationale.

Actually you can still do that while keeping it in a framework led by his personal life. See Kazi Nazrul Islam, where I've tried to keep it in harmony in the sequence of his life, but also provide criticism and analysis of his work - its not yet FA, but I like that way of writing as better to read - I had similar complaint on Tagore's FA, but I was late for that and the biography was sufficiently detailed and balanced. The problem with the organization in Ray is that the biography ends just as one scrolls a little, and the rest seem forks of film articls with too much on commemoration. Importantly I think your reasoning is reason itself to integrate as I suggest. If Ray lived thru his work (quite rightly), why is his personal life section separate? Why don't you add more info on how Ray thought of, approached and behaved during his work. What personal events played a role in his personal life? How did his work change after his 1983 heart attack? Did his work alter in nature? Also, you must NOT make that judgment but instead present facts of his life in an orderly fashion and let the reader decide. Here you impose your POV about Ray's life (inadvertantly) - you see it in a particular way, perhaps based on the book you've read of him, but its not appropriate for an encyclopedia article. It doesn't have to proceed like thought x personal life = film. If you can get this article to flow in one stream, I'll be only too happy to support it in its present form. That "Ray lived thru his work" is POV - its a specific interpretation that may be disputed by other scholars. You should write the article in a clear organization that through its composition will allow the reader to judge whether Ray lived thru his work, or were there dissociated elements of his personality and life. In any case, the article should not be organized based on this perspective. Bengali reference are just fine - one just needs to cite it differently. If you have any, much appreciated. The organisation at present (Apu years, middle etc) is better for encyclopedia, as Rama said. However, literary creations,IMO,is better discussed seperately - as it is now. Satyajit Ray: Template talk

I differ with you in one regard; the template should contain all the films, and also contain English names. Because other than Bengalis (and many non-Bengali Indians), the rest of the world knows the films in English (and maybe other language) names. I propose to add the template. It does not look good, but tries to be comprehensive, which is a necessary attribute of an encyclopedia. What do u say? Also, Rama, have a look at this template. Please help to better it. Hey I deleted Filmography and the old template. Added the new template instead. Some links (eg film institute) needs some work and there are some red links - I'll take care of those in 2 days. However, think if anything more is needed to add in the template. I can think of a lot (eg Feluda books) but not good! See if you like the changes I made.

Advantages of the changes: 3kb less size. All films listed, along with English names, without having any listy look in the article!

I have something to tell you. In "The Apu Years" there are stuffs that do not belong to that period, eg. GuGaBaBa funding, crane crash in jalsaghar, Pikoo, Naxal era etc. I hope you can incorporate this stuffs elsewhere (though it's tough!). I shall be checking all sections for disambiguation, double redirects etc - but later. Hope the article would be ready for FAC by 2 weeks more, we are not in a hurry!
