GOCE November drive wrap-up
Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November. Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote. Coodinator election: The six-month term for our fourth tranche of Guild coordinators will expire at the end of December. Nominations are open for the fifth tranche of coordinators, who will serve from 1 January to 30 June 2013. For complete information, please have a look at the election page. – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest. EFBot
I'm guessing you're not on IRC right now, so I'll leave a note here.
I've finished all of the code. Currently the bot would read from User:Username/filters.css which would be a comma separated list of numbers. I did a bit of research into how Mr.Z-bot works, and found #wikipedia-en-abuse-log which is sort of an IRC feed, except it's just polling the API every 30 seconds and reporting it to the channel. I configured the bot to poll the API every 5 minutes, however that could be easily changed. What's your opinion on that?
And the justification for using a bot instead of turning on the block feature, while silly, is pretty reasonable: We give EFM to some non-admins, which would theoretically give them the ability to block users, if blocking was enabled on the abuse filter. Thoughts? Legoktm (talk) 00:14, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
- No objection, assuming you can get BAG/community approval. Would need to see the code to be sure. I don't think you can really get away from the whole "we give EFM to some non-admins" though - even if this is your workaround, an EFM could always just edit the filter to block whomever they wanted on the next chance they edit. Traditionally, the community has been against any edit-filter based blocking, but maybe they'll agree this time. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 06:44, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I do think that presents an interesting argument. Looking at this discussion, the basic consensus was that denying EFM to a non-admin because they can technically block a user isn't appropriate. I guess the main difference in the bots implementation is that an admin needs to approve the filter (by adding it to the .css page). Technically a non-admin could then edit the filter as a work-around, however they'd probably lose access anyways if it was in a malicious manner.
- Do you know of any other filters that should be insta-blocks? LTA ones for example? And did you have an account name in mind? I was thinking something like "EFBot". Right now I wouldn't have the time to go through a drama-filled BRFA, but in a few weeks (after finals) I can do it. Would you be around at that time as well? Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 07:18, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
