WikiXDC: Wikipedia 10th Birthday!

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

You are invited to WikiXDC, a special meetup event and celebration on Saturday, January 22 hosted by the National Archives and Records Administration in downtown Washington, D.C.

• Date: January 22, 2011 (tentatively 9:30 AM - 5 PM)
• Location: National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), downtown building, Pennsylvania Avenue & 7th St NW.
• Description: There will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the National Archives and you will learn more about what NARA does. We will also have a mini-film screening featuring FedFlix videos along with a special message from Jimmy Wales. In the afternoon, there will be lightning talks by Wikimedians (signup to speak), wiki-trivia, and cupcakes to celebrate!

Permissions for images are here. Why does it take any more than that?

Expanding a bit, since my page is pending deletion, what do I have to do to get the approval of the page? And with all these rules, I can't believe how ANYTHING is on wikipedia. -Feildmaster (talk) 08:26, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Please understand that, for legal reasons, OTRS must be contacted by the owners of that content if they wish to release it. It must be released under very specific licenses. The link you gave does not say that. The email addresses shown are who must be contacted. As for the page, well, to put it quite simply, anything on Wikipedia must be notable, that is, worthy of inclusion in an encyclopedia. Otherwise, we would have 5 million pages about garage bands that nobody's ever heard of. Third-party, reliable sources are necessary to not only ensure verifiability of the content that's on the page, but also that the subject is notable. A few questions: edits, expanding articles and copyright approval.

Hi Shirik - I hope I am placing this question in the right place!

Thanks for your help yesterday. I have a few more questions you might be able to help with.

1. I was happily making more tweaks to the article last night (adding more references etc.) and suddenly realized the page is now “live” and I might not be allowed to do that quite so freely now. Is that right?

2. I notice that articles of non-major personalities tend to be quite short. For this reason I didn’t add a discography for Gary Williams. If I were to add one, would that increase the chances of the page being flagged for removal?

3. One of the users last night told me that he had flagged the album cover photo for removal due to copyright issues. Fair enough, so I emailed Gary Williams yesterday and asked for permission to use one of the two photographs I have uploaded to Wikipedia. Assuming he says “yes” what happens? I have not added either picture to the article (I removed the album cover). How will I know if he says “yes” (or “no”)? I assume someone at Wiki flags the images accordingly?

That’s it. Thanks for your help. I want to use this article as my test page so once this is right and I have learned more I can try and be useful elsewhere.

Hi Bosents. First off, Wikipedia is always changing. Even our best articles are changing very rapidly. Take a look at how many changes there are just today on today's featured article (the article on the front page). Feel free to be bold and make changes. Nothing you do can't be undone. Furthermore, try not to worry about that page being deleted – there are only very strict criteria under which it can be deleted, and certainly adding more information is not a bad thing (if it's too much, someone else, or yourself, can always remove or trim down that section later). Finally, I understand the worry about the album cover photo. Album covers are OK to use for pages on the album itself, but not on the person. If he says it's ok to use the picture, we will need him to contact OTRS, a support group that manages several things including licenses, at permissions-en@wikimedia.org. The entire process is described in detail here. From there, the OTRS group will make sure the image is tagged properly. (Do note the image will have to be uploaded again, in the same manner you did before.) Hope that helps, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:41, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

shirik, please save the fukung page. It is an interesting wesbite worth noting, I have NO financial gain from posting it, I only am explaining a website previously left unexplained that has a significant following, but no information ANYWHERE on the internet about it. I seek to change that

That there is no information about the website anywhere on the internet is a pretty good indication that it doesn't belong on Wikipedia. Wikipedia requires a level of notability. This website doesn't meet that. Three different administrators have found reason your article meets our deletion policy for that reason. If you disagree, you should request a deletion review, but I should warn you that such a review is unlikely to succeed based off what you have told me here. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:54, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

I've linked to you a policy and a guideline, WP:N and WP:WEB, respectively, which directly show the kinds of things we look for to establish notability. Net worth is not one of those things. Furthermore, what is "notable enough for me" is irrelevant – Wikipedia operates on consensus. I am merely enacting what has already been laid out by the community. If you wish to challenge this view, you need to request a deletion review, but I strongly encourage you read the relevant policies and guidelines before going down this road. I strongly feel that if you fully understand the policies and guidelines that have been laid out, you will see why I have deleted the article. Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats. Participation GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Progress report We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal. Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive.
