As decades have passed, Indian women have found interesting ways to live with this name-changing ritual. Until the late 1980s most urban working women adopted their husband’s family name. But the early 1990s saw a change. As a small number of Indian Lucy Stones still kept their names, many others were discovering innovative ways to keep their old identities as they adhered to the demands of tradition.
