Excellent essay, highly enjoyable read --and there's more than a kernel of truth to it. --Bobak (talk) 20:08, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

- And then, do the remarkable, don't be an antagonistic jerk- actually make it better! For others, too, not merely for the I-ME-MINE. After all, the alphabet has 26 letters to choose from. EagleScout18 (talk) 00:24, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

If the newcomer is so ignorant...
[edit]- I can't tell if I've stumbled onto an inside joke, so I apologgize in advance.
- To answwer the question posed, I as a newbie could not find my post to check for spelling/grammar, but I noticed a new orange colored bar at the top of all Wikipedia pages with a link that I eventually clicked on. I haven't figured out how to link anything yet, but this is the "path" that lead me here:
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:TALK
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_do_not_bite_the_newcomers
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:BITECLUB
- If this page is an inside joke/private discussion among administrators, perhaps one or more of those pages contain links which are incorrect? Nij Iskode (talk) 19:38, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Answer to the begged question
[edit]"This rather begs the question: if the newcomer is so ignorant that they need to be protected by WP:BITE, how exactly did they know to link to that guideline?"
Because the good faith newcomer would have subsequently read the links that he was sent and then, in his zeal to understand Wikipedia's policies, since learned of this "rule" too. Thus the new question becomes why bother having a suggestion to protect newcomers if bad faith is raised should the newcomer realize they've been wronged?108.15.50.162 (talk) 00:07, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
- I am in agreement with 108.15.50.162. Neither I nor anybody in my household knew about the WP:BITE guideline when being attacked so aggressively by Qworty and his cronies 14 months ago. I don't think it would have stopped him or any other editors who are so aggressive, but it would have been nice to know about when trying to find out how to complain about his behavior towards me. I am not a frequent, "here online all day," editor so by that standard, I am still learning; in terms of longevity, though, one editor asked me how I "could be so stupid" because he thought that longevity means absolute knowledge of all aspects of Wikipedia. Regarding your question, though, I learned about the WP:BITE guideline, today, when I was sent a message from the Teahouse Q/A on the subject. When I was being mercilessly attacked by Qworty and his cronies, I learned info new to me by trying to find replies based on all the jargon they were sending me. So I think 108.15.50.162 correctly answered how the newcomer learns that he or she is to be protected by WP:BITE by saying that he or she found it "in his (or her) zeal to understand Wikipedia's policies" especially while being attacked by a know-it-all editor. Just my two cents, though. It won't even get you a cup of coffee.Taram (talk) 17:49, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
