Created Page

[edit]

Nigel Bliss has created a page Anotherleap (talk) 21:00, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Seth, I found four topics in which I feel need to be revised. These two topic do not have enough information presented:Electrochemical Battery and Fuel Cell. These two topics need to be interpreted so that anyone with a basic understanding of chemistry could understand the message: Electrochemical Cell and Electrochemical Potential. The Electrochemical Battery page does not have very much information. I could talk about the different kinds of batteries and add a basic chemical understanding of the functionality behind this process. The Fuel Cell page could use a few more examples of how fuel cells can be used. The Electrochemical Cell page needs to be written in a way that more people could understand it, especially in the Equilibrium reaction section. The Electrochemical Potential page needs to be more understandable, especially in the parts where it discusses the concepts of thermodynamics and equilibrium. I hope this is everything you are looking for.

Alex ReeseAlexander.reese (talk) 21:45, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Potential Revision Areas

[edit]

Seth,

The four topics that I found which need revisions are:

The Faraday’s laws page does not have very much information, and the explanation of the laws is chunked and awkward to read through. I found myself getting a bit lost through it, and feel it should be broken down much further so that someone with only a basic understanding of chemistry could understand the concepts.

The Electrochemical Battery page has information about the uses and various types of batteries, but the page lacks the science behind the technology. A basic chemical understanding should be added to this page.

I was surprised by the half-reaction page in that it seems to be missing a substantial amount of information. A component that could be added to this page is half-reactions in acidic vs. basic conditions. The explanation is very brief, and uses some more advanced chemical terminology that a basic chemistry student may not understand.

A more advanced knowledge of chemistry would be necessary in order to navigate the Electrochemical cell page. Much of the terminology used is more advanced and left unexplained to the reader. Further, the chemistry content could be expanded on, and the significance of the electrochemical cell should be emphasized.

Thanks, Alyssa Amd9 (talk) 06:09, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles

[edit]

I have to admit while educational this was a very difficult task for me. I did the best I could and hope it is good enough or what you are looking for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemical_energy_conversion

very vague. I would hope it would have more than just one reference to an article. Maybe more on the conversion process not sure

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biobattery

How it works section is not complete I don't think.Protons H+ and E- which make electricity doesn't sound right The chemical equation isn't blanced properly under process.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_battery

the reaction isn't balanced properly. Shouldn't this statement have a citation or reference > "Aluminium-chlorine battery was patented by United States Air Force in the 1970s and designed mostly for military applications. They use aluminium anodes and chlorine on graphite substrate cathodes. Required elevated temperatures to be operational."

Articles needing work

[edit]
The four articles I found that could use some work are half-reaction, battery (electricity), chemical reaction, and Daniell cell.
With half-reaction, the coverage seemed extremely short. It could maybe mention how it works under different conditions.
For battery (electricity), there could be more definition for batterey components instead of facts about sales for previous years.
The chemical reaction article uses some technical terms and is an extremely long description. It could be made easier to understand and could also be shortened so there is not as much unnecessary information.
For the Daniell cell, there are way too many technical terms that could be confusing to someone with little or no chemistry background.

Assignment 3

[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemistry There is no recent developments listed past the 1970’s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidation The portion explaining reduction potentials could be explained more clearly and intensively.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemistry The portion explaining how to balance reactions in acidic conditions uses a fairly complicated reaction. Simpler reactions would be easier to understand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemistry The same goes for balancing reactions in basic conditions. It’s too complicated and can be explained more effectively.

OITowl3 (talk) 01:44, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Anthony, The two articles I found that were too short/missing something are:

  • Water-activated battery A very short article that is not clear as to why these batteries have less heavy metals than regular batteries.
  • Solid-state battery The second sentence makes claims about materials in the batteries, but is unclear about what materials it is referring to. I suspect that it may be referring to the solid electrolytes. It is also a very short page.

The two articles I found that were too technical are:

  • Lithium-air battery The operation section of this article is hard to understand with a lot of organic lingo.
  • Flow battery The description made my brain tired. It contained technical words I have never heard of and it failed to reference them. The rest of the article was similar.

REEstudent (talk) 02:05, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seth, Lacking information Electrochemical cell could use an example of how to calculate the difference in voltage. Electrode potential under the Measurement section, they mention a center electrode, but never mention its purpose.

Too technical Fuel cell the half reaction equations should have the molecules name either beside or under it, so people know what they are and the table further down the page is very hard to read, follow, and has no rhyme or reason to its order Tree19 (talk) 02:50, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Assignment 3

[edit]

I have found some articles that could use some attention: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faradaic_current This section seemed a bit short. I think a little more information is needed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_notation This section also seemed short and what was included needed to be dumbed down a bit for those who didn't have much science background. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biophotovoltaic This article is only two sentences. Elaboration is definitely required. A picture or diagram would be nice, too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrocapillarity Fairly short article with a lot of technical information. Maybe a rewrite could include a little more for the less informed reader. Nightingale8283 (talk) 03:22, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some Suggested Pages for Improvement - Assignment #3

[edit]

Kirwan Fox found some pages which could use some improvement.

Pages missing information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-reaction
This is only a brief description of what a half-reaction is, and is not nearly adequate even for a layman
to understand it. There is no explanation of any of the myriad of uses of the half-reaction in chemistry, or what is happening
to electrons during oxidation or reduction, or how to identify the differences.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baghdad_battery
This is not so much a problem with a page, but a suggestion to add this page to the battery types category.
There are quite a few historical references to early batteries in the battery types category. While it is true there
is disagreement about whether this is really the first galvanic cell predating our modern versions by a 1000 years, it
is important to point out this is an ancient device which had that capability, though it's real use cannot be confirmed.
EDIT - just noticed a reference to this on the galvanic cell page. That might be enough.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemical_energy_conversion
This is an incredibly short inadequate page which even teases the reader with how important this is to new automotive technology.
Expansion badly needed!
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Drew.P.Branch (talkcontribs) 06:04, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pages utilizing terminology a bit too technical
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemiluminescence
I really had a hard time understanding some of the terms on this page.
It is really too short to be a technical article, rather it should be simplified a bit for the layman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protonic_ceramic_fuel_cell
I thought this page didn't have very clear explanations.
There are quite a few acronyms which could be expanded to include either links to description pages,
or explanations of what they mean.

Will's Assignment #3

[edit]

Hi Seth,

For my third assignment, I was going to modify the following articles:

Electrochemical cell is a very short page. I feel that I could add new information (including some example reactions), along with modifying the somewhat wordy language.

Chemical energy is another VERY short page. It seems to me that they may be trying to explain the ΔG° concept we've been discussing in class, however I may be interpreting the term "chemical energy" incorrectly.

Spontaneous reaction starts off sounding very confusing to a person seeking general knowledge. The overview seems a little more well-written. I would like to focus on cleaning up the introduction.

Saturation (chemistry) is very short and seems to assume quite a bit of chemistry/science knowledge on the reader's part. I would like to explain some of the chemistry terms in more plain language.

Willdogg698 (talk) 05:36, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Assignment #3

[edit]

Hi Dr. Anthony,

I have found four articles/pages that I reckon could use some fixing.

1) "Solar panels on spacecraft". This article seems like it should be addressed to a general audience, but it seems still to have some rather technical words that I do not understand. For example, 'figure of merit', and 'telemetry'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_panels_on_spacecraft

2) The page "Electrochemical gradient", could be written to a more general audience if the terms were more broadly defined. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemical_gradient

3) The "Faraday's constant" page was a bit short. It seems like there could be more said about the electric charge per mole of electrons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_constant

4) The page, "Polarization (electrochemistry)", is confusing to the lay person (a.k.a., me). An equation or some diagram would help the concept be more easily understood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarization_%28electrochemistry%29

Thanks!

Assignment #3 for Kristagoit (talk) 03:55, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

[edit]

Hello!

Here are my two articles that are short or absent:

Half Reactions

There is little data on half reactions, and it does not come up automatically when searched for in the Wikipedia bar.

Laws of Thermodynamics -> History

The history aspect of the laws of thermodynamics is barely touched upon and could be expanded upon.

These are my two articles that are too technical:

Flow Battery -> Cases of Flow Batteries

This part of the article is especially technical, assuming the reader has previous knowledge on electrochemistry basics.

Ions -> Chemistry

Most of this article would be difficult for a person with average intelligence of chemistry to understand.

Thanks! Kristagoit (talk) 03:55, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kevin Vuong Assignment #3

[edit]

Electrolysis The introductory definition is slightly technical and hard to understand without any chemistry knowledge. It also could be more specific on the useful applications of electrolysis instead of only listing ores in the introduction.

Electroosmotic pump The information given is hard to understand, a section with less jargon should be included.

Magnesium-air fuel cell lacks anything more than a general sentence. Needs to have further elaboration.

Potassium-ion battery The information is general, there should be a section on applications and installations and a more specific description of the chemical process. KVuong (talk) 04:10, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles that need work

[edit]

Rechargeable Battery - Section on damage to cells over time doesn't explain reason.

Oxidation - Etymology section is a little confusing when mentioning "hydrogenation."

Ion - A memory aide section would be helpful in remembering the difference between cations and anions.

Electropositivity - Little information is given and more would be helpful.

Thanks Seth,

Kaleb T. Kaleb.LT (talk) 05:02, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power

For this section there is a lot of differnet options for power. Adding a link for Power (chemistry) and placing some of what we have done could help this page. It seems like someone would have to look through a lot to get what we are looking for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage

In the definition it has in words "Voltage is electric potential energy per unit charge, measured in joules per coulomb ( = volts)". I think this would be more helpful if this was more visual. (Volts=Joules/Coulombs) bolded and by itself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_current

In our notes we show that "Current:(Amperes=Coulombs/Second)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_bridge This seems that they are only saying two items could create a salt bring. It also doesn't give a good disscprition about the process. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pitts0608 (talkcontribs) 16:53, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Assignment 3

[edit]

Hi Seth, here are some articles I found that need some work:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmotic_power#Efficiency This article explained what Osmotic Power was well but lacked information on the efficiency of using Osmotic Power, kind of like a "benefits" section per se.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrode This article was surprisingly short, and has the basics of what an electrode is, but lacks information on the specifics of how they work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equilibrium_constant The article gives a brief overview of what the equilibrium constant K that might sound too technical for those who have not studied the subject as of yet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_current One sentence that says "An ion current is the influx and/or efflux of ions through an ion channel."

Wikipedia Assignment #4

[edit]

Hi Dr. Anthony,

I decided to edit the section called "Reducing Agent". I copied below the changes that I made. I am open to any suggestions!

Importance of reducing and oxidizing agents

[edit]

Reducing agents and oxidizing agents are the ones responsible for corrosion, which is the “degradation of a solid, usually a metal, as a result of electrochemical activity”.[1] The word corrosion comes from the Latin word, corrodere, which literally means "to gnaw away". Corrosion requires an negative electrodeanode, and a positive electrode cathode, to take place. The anode is an element that loses electrons (reducing agent), thus oxidation always occurs in the anode, and the cathode is an element that gains electrons (oxidizing agent), thus reduction always occurs in the cathode. This process can be used in electrolysis to generate electricity. Corrosion occurs whenever there’s a difference in oxidation potential. When there is an oxidation potential, the anode metal begins deteriorating, given there is an electrical connection and the presence of an electrolyte.

Thanks!

Lithium-ion battery is an article that could be simplified in some parts. The introduction is a little vocab intensive.

Electrolytic Cell Is another article that could be simplified due to some of its technical content.

For assignment # 4, I chose to edit the Half-Cell article and add what I thought to be more usefull information in understanding what a Half-cell is.

[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemical_cell - could use some examples, the article is kind of short , I figured I could add some examples to make it easier to understand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-reaction - this article is very very short and I think it could use some more explanation about what half deacons are.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrolysis - could be made easier to understand for those without much chemistry information. Change some sentences to make it easier to understand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_reaction - it was quickly evident this was going to be a fun read, it could be worded to be more gauged for the casual reader. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wallace.miller (talkcontribs) 05:09, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Assignment #4

[edit]

Original Post

[edit]

The key process of electrolysis is the interchange of atoms and ions by the removal or addition of electrons from the external circuit. The desired products of electrolysis are often in a different physical state from the electrolyte and can be removed by some physical processes. For example, in the electrolysis of brine to produce hydrogen and chlorine, the products are gaseous. These gaseous products bubble from the electrolyte and are collected.[2]

Revised Post

[edit]

The key process of electrolysis is the interchange of atoms and ions by the removal or addition of electrons from the external circuit. The process requires that an electrolyte, an ionized solution or salt, completes a circuit between two electrodes. The cathode and the anode. Reduction always occurs at the cathode while oxidation always occurs at the anode. The desired products of electrolysis are often in a different physical state from the electrolyte and can be removed by some physical processes. For example, in the electrolysis of brine to produce hydrogen and chlorine, the products are gaseous. These gaseous products bubble from the electrolyte and are collected.(Disassociated hydrogen ions gain an electron at the cathode and pair off to become hydrogen gas, and chlorine ions are attracted to the anode where they lose an electron, become chlorine atoms, pair off, and become chlorine gas) [2]

Hey Seth:

I am letting you know that I just did Assingment #5. Hopefully its what you are looking for. I also left this information on the person's sandbox page so that they could see it in hopes it would help them make a better page:

"Hey, this is very well done! I really like how you explained terms clearly. I feel that you explained this so well that someone with a very limited understanding of chemistry could follow and understand this text. One suggestion that I would make would be maybe include units and also to maybe include real world examples of how these are used. Overall, Great job! It is very thorough."

Hey Seth:

I just am letting you know that I just finished the second part of Assignment #5 Part two. This is what I said:

"Great Job! I really liked how thorough you are I your explanation. It is very easy to follow along, even for someone with a limited knowledge of chemistry. I feel that with these edits the article is much stronger and easier to understand. The only suggestion that I could make would be to include a mnemonic method for remembering that the oxidation occurs in the anode, while reduction occurs in the cathode. One example would be “AN OX and a RED CAT.” Then, obviously, you would have to explain how this is a good way of remembering."

Hope this is what you are looking for. Thanks!

Purpose of the salt bridge in electrochemical cell:

[edit]

Purpose of the salt bridge in electrochemical cell:

The salt bridge transfers electrons from the anode to cathode electrode to balance the charge of both electrochemical cells. Without the salt bridge there would be a surplus of positive charge stockpile at the anode and a surplus of negative stockpile at the cathode. Without the flow of electrons the reactions would stop the current to flow.

As electrons leave one half of a galvanic cell and flow to the other, a difference in charge is established. If no salt bridge were used, this charge difference would prevent further flow of electrons. A salt bridge allows the flow of ions to maintain a balance in charge between the oxidation and reduction vessels while keeping the contents of each separate. With the charge difference balanced, electrons can flow once again, and the reduction and oxidation reactions can proceed. In general, keeping the two cells separate is preferable from the point of view of eliminating variables from an experiment. When no direct contact between electrolytes is allowed, there is no need to make allowance for possible interactions between ionic species.

The technique more specifically allows freedom in the choice of ions in solution. For instance, a mixture of two different cations in solution might result in the preferential reduction of the wrong one, for the purposes of the experiment. With a salt bridge, the desired cation (positive) species is isolated in one vessel while the cation in the other vessel may be chosen to make the experiment easier, such as using a more soluble, or more stable salt of the anionic (negative) species.

If the two vessels are entirely disconnected, without a salt bridge, then the cation and anion species are also isolated, but then each species quickly reaches equilibrium because no electrical current can flow. The salt bridge can be seen as a way of completing the ionic circuit without letting the solutions intermix.

Chris B: Assignment 3

[edit]

Wiki assignment 3 Seth, hopefully these will work.

The first two articles seem to miss the mark, on important an element (or elements)

Critique #1, title: “Electrochemistry” (link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemistry) Missing Content—no link to PV Cells—really??! There is a link to semiconductors which is in the same area, but PV should be linked as well.

Critique #2, Article: “Semiconductor” (link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiconductor)

“The conductivity of a semiconductor increases with increasing temperature, behavior opposite to that of a metal.[1] ” [This statement is true when referencing a solid piece of metal, say a metal bar, or continuous length of wire; however, it often falls by the wayside when the conductor is an element in a circuit that includes a reactive load such as an AC motor. A reference to a related article would be helpful.]

The articles below are burdensome, more for excessive verbiage, than for being overly technical—although that could exists as well.

Critique #3, title: “Electrical Conductor” (link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_conductor)

Overburdened with verbiage as shown by the first sentence, of the first paragraph: [In physics and electrical engineering, [cap]a conductor is an object or type of material which permits the flow of electric charges in one or more directions.]

Critique #4, title: “Fuel Cell” link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_cell)

This article is very “wordy” for general consumption. If written more in the style of technical writing (minimizing unhelpful or unnecessary words) I think it would be more consumable. A fuel cell is a device that converts the chemical energy from a fuel into electricity through [by reacting it] chemical reaction with oxygen or another oxidizing[er] agent.[1] ChrisB WIGEfan (talk) 00:18, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Greg R: Assignment 3

[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemical_cell

For such an important part of electrochemistry, this article seems pretty short, especially in the cell potential section.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_%28electricity%29#Primary_battery_chemistries

The section on primary battery chemistry (particularly the "elaboration" subsection) is not proportional to the amount of information provided in the secondary battery chemistry comments.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_effect

I feel like "temperature controllers" in the opening paragraph should be linked so that one may view the different types of controllers or even find out what temperature controllers are if it is not known.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrochemical_reaction#Nernst_equation

The section on electrolysis of aqueous solutions is only one sentence and rather vague. I could definitely be explained better.

If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Caroline Island aka Millenium

[edit]

Your article has a point that I believe needs correction, i.e. the "ownership changed" also, there is room for updating of the changes since Felix U. occupied an islet and exploited the Clams and Coconut crabs. Capt. Omar Darr, as explained in "Together Alone" held a lease and sublet that lease to the Falconers, on the understanding that there would be a renewal to himself which he would pass on the family in due course. The lease was then offered to the businessman, but it became obvious that he was not conservation minded and the lease was withdrawn. The person who has done a lot of the work to keep this atoll pristine visited there with the Govt. officials for the Year 2000 celebrations and pressed to them the need for conservation and not the blatant exploitation that had occurred since the Falconers left. She lives in Hawaii now, and Ron Falconer moved to Moorea, his wife, and children, eventually returned to France. I notice that someone had admitted to living there - there was an American who sailed there and stayed at the Falconer homesite for a period in the 1990s, and a Frenchman in this decade. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Sethant. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Sethant.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The article Marla Dorrel has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG, WP:NPOL - certainly not a big enough town to grant a presumption of notability to council members.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to the required activity level before the beginning of January 2023.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to engage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
