U.S. government works

For the U.S., federal government works are not eligible for copyright protection (17 USC 105). It is not clear whether this applies world-wide, see the CENDI Copyright FAQ list, 3.1.7 and a discussion on that at the LibraryLaw Blog.

In practice, this means that much material on *.gov and *.mil, as well as material on some *.us web sites (such as the sites of the U.S. Forest Service), are in the public domain. Please note that not all such material is in the public domain, though:

If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

Hello, can you point me to the policy regarding valid sources on these types of uploads? I followed the instructions on the upload form, including all available information. Your plate warning above states that "If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content." WP:CITE#IMAGE states that the author of the image should be listed if known. Looking at the image, I cannot determine the nature of the image, and have no way of contacting the owner of the photobucket account. A quick google images search reveals that the image appears to be unique. Therefore I must assume the owner of the photobucket is the original copyright owner.
