Constantinople
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia! Re: this edit.
On the English Wikipedia there's no established practice on whether "Constantinople" or "Istanbul" are preferred for the Ottoman city. Having said that, I have a personal preference for "Constantinople" as that was the name used for the entire city in English (wuth Konstantiniyye and other names in Turkish) during the actual historical period; the inner city in the city walls was known in English as Stamboul (Istanbul in Turkish here) - this meant Istanbul, while in use in Ottoman times, only referred to a part of the city. I read Elhem Edhem's encyclopedia entry on Istanbul, which I used as a source in Names of Istanbul.
I know several modern sources, especially those related to modern Turkey, use Istanbul for the Ottoman city, but I read a counter-argument that it would be like calling World War II-era Leningrad "St. Petersburg", even though the city was called "leningrad" at the time. I personally prefer using Constantinople for the Ottoman city but explaining in the first instance that it is today known as Istanbul.
