- A request for comment asks whether partial blocks should be enabled on the English Wikipedia. If enabled, this functionality would allow administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces, rather than the entire site.
- A proposal asks whether admins who don't use their tools for a significant period of time (e.g. five years) should have the toolset procedurally removed.
- Following a successful RfC, a whitelist is now available for users whose redirects will be autopatrolled by a bot, removing them from the new pages patrol queue. Admins can add such users to Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist after a discussion following the guidelines at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist.

[edit]Thanks for the heads up dude. Actually I didn't, and I simply saw this as a duplication of information that doesn't need to be listed twice?? and thus removed it. I stand corrected in regards to any future edits. Cyberwitchy (talk) 10:35, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
- Good. And edit summaries that explain your thinking would go a long way towards making it clear what you are trying to achieve. Schwede66 11:21, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
Cite news template use of newspaper rather than work
[edit]I'm not sure why but you changed the newspaper= to work= in the citations in the Wellington Town Hall article, and elsewhere. I know work covers all bases, but newspaper retains the semantic meaning that the citation is from a newspaper, rather than a magazine, journal or other source. Is there something I don't know? Jon (talk) 10:35, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- Mōrena Jon, the list of rules in my AWB is longer than my arm. The change commented on by you was incidental as I was tidying up after the (relatively recent) move of the Mayor of Wellington article. Combined with some other AWB rules, those changes can result in the print title to be shown in italics when that was originally not the case (though not in the case of the article in question). If it bothers you enough, please feel free to revert; I don't mind. Schwede66 18:34, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Schwede66: ohai... I should probably figure out all this automated stuff like AWB folks are using, it sounds useful! — Jon (talk) 07:35, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
- Kia ora Jon, it depends what interests you. If you are into repetitive tasks, AWB is most useful indeed. Feel free to ask if you get stuck reading up on what it can do. I won't know all about it (not by a long shot) but if I can help, I'd be most happy to share my thoughts. Even more useful is Twinkle, in case you haven't discovered it yet. Mistyping at Naming conventions Talk?
[edit]Hi. When you wrote "whether red links indicate that there isn't an existing article or whether we don't have an article" in this edit, did you perhaps mean to use "redirect" or something? Nurg (talk) 03:10, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Revert of my edit of Extinction Rebellion
[edit]Regarding you saying "you are an experienced editor and you reverted a brand-new editor; the least you should do is give an edit summary explaining why you reverted the editor as otherwise, you are simply pushing prospective editors away from Wikipedia" about my rollback at Extinction Rebellion... Thank you for reminding me of this. Their edit felt like vandalism at the time, as it slapped a quote in the middle of things, with broken formatting and breaking a ref, and given there's been other such soapboxing of this article recently, I used Rollback, which was lazy of me. I generally try to bear in mind how my actions could unintentially alienate others so thank you for pointing this out. -Lopifalko (talk) 05:41, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- I hope you didn't feel too bad about it, Lopifalko. I didn't check in detail whether it was vandalism but I did spot the stray code, which I manually removed before saving. Yes, it really is important to be nice to newbies; they may not know what they are doing and it's very easy to be frustrated really early on, and then they are lost forever. I'm sure I don't always get it might myself either. But we should all try! Schwede66 05:47, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- No I don't feel bad, thanks. I do do things where I later think to myself in horror "by my cut and thrust, newcomers could interpret what I've done in a myriad of unexpected negative ways, or plainly not understand", and as you say never return, so I'm only too happy for your reminder. I've left a message on the person's talk page. -Lopifalko (talk) 05:53, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

New article on Christchurch's residential red zone
[edit]Kia ora and hello! I am writing to you because you are a Wikipedian from Christchurch, who has edited pages about the 2010-2011 Christchurch earthquakes. I have just finished creating a new article for Christchurch's residential red zone following the earthquakes. However, I am an American who has never visited New Zealand, let alone Christchurch, so I would find it helpful for Wikipedians from Christchurch to look over this article. In particular, I am hoping that someone will be able to contribute an image of the zone after demolition and removal of the houses that were there, especially an aerial image.
Thank you! I am an urban planning student with an interest in natural disaster preparation and recovery, so I saw this article as a hole that I could fill on Wikipedia.
Best,
Riverhugger (talk) 09:33, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- Good on you, Riverhugger. That's awesome work. I've had it on my plate for ages (well, I want to get rid of all the red links in the Christchurch earthquakes navbox). You've done a very good job, especially given that you lack the personal experience of having lived through all this. If you don't mind, I'll convert this from US spelling and date format to the local settings as per MOS:TIES. There's a commons category with dozens of images in it; I've linked it to the article. Schwede66 18:26, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- Lol thanks for correcting my spelling and formats. I thought I did most of it correctly ("tyre" instead of "tire"; "compulsory purchase" instead of "eminent domain"; I even learned what a hectare is because America refuses to use metric for whatever reason) but I appreciate your help! Riverhugger (talk) 19:02, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yun Chol (weightlifter)
[edit]See WP:LOCALCONSENSUS. NOLY can't allow inclusion of biographies, especially, where there is no no-trivial independent sourcing. Speedy keep is also unavailable where there are good faith Delete !votes, as is the case here. Guy (help!) 09:25, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
This closure is a misapplication of WP:NOLY. NOLY says specifically that a topic passing it is "Athletes from any sport are presumed notable
(emphasis added). Guy may challenge that presumption in keeping with NSPORT (of which NOLY is a part of's) statement that "meeting of any of these criteria does not mean that an article must be kept. These are merely rules of thumb which some editors choose to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to keep an article that is on articles for deletion."
Please reverse your speedy closure of this AfD. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 11:19, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Came here for the same thing - none of the speedy keep criteria apply in this case. Even if JzG nominated the article disruptively, I'm an uninvolved editor who recommended deletion. Please undo your speedy-keep closure and let the discussion run the usual week. If the consensus from that week is keep, then that's fine, but this wasn't a good close. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 13:42, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
As you've been active on wiki and have not replied I have gone ahead and asked DRV to take a look at this close. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 18:25, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- I have restored the AfD as per the above requests (had previously done some editing on my mobile phone but this is easier to do having a proper keyboard). Schwede66 19:17, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Just to correct the above claims that "Speedy keep is also unavailable where there are good faith Delete !votes", this only applies when the delete !voters are uninvolved (see WP:SKCRIT #2). This was not the case here (as they !voter in question was involved in the ANI thread), so you did nothing wrong in this regard. Cheers, Number 57 19:21, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for being bold with your initial closure, and dealing with the inevitable flack too. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 20:07, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

- Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
- The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with
wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input
. No proposed process received consensus.
- Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
- When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]
- Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators
that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Noma Copley review
[edit]Hello Schwede66. Can you please be more specific in what it is that you don't consider encyclopedia language? This is my fifth Wiki entry and I've never had this issue. If you object to the term "life partner," I removed the term life. Since marriage wasn't an option at that time, what other terminology would you suggest? Where else in the article do you have a problem with the language? I've shared this entry with a number of people who are all at loss to suggest what other language needs to be changed in order to get over the threshold to accept this entry. Thank you for any guidance you can provide.Gaw54 (talk) 16:16, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Hey Schwede66, I noticed your edit to my draft Karlyn Percil and I'd like reach out to get further recommendations. I've made some edits to sources, which seemed to be the primary issue. - @AMPLIFYHER2020: I stumbled across this article and a very simple way to help you was to point out those areas that were unreferenced. Just so that you can concentrate your efforts there; bios of living people need to be referenced throughout. Beyond that, I'm afraid to say that I have no interest in the topic area. Going by the feedback of the reviewer, you need to show that the person is in fact notable. It would take a while to look through the references that you have got and establish whether that criterion is now satisfied. I don't have that time to spare (nor the necessary interest); I'm sorry. Good luck! Schwede66 23:57, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Schwede, thanks for cropping the photo on Wells' page, I put it there and was going to ask somewhere for help cropping it down! Could you crop it again though to just show her and not both of them? I think for an individual bio it's better to just have the picture of the subject of the article. What do you think? MurielMary (talk) 19:12, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
- My thinking was that given that they are both notable, we should show them both up until the time that he's got his own article. But I don't have strong feelings on the matter. I've already prepared crops for the individuals; have a look at the Commons categories. Schwede66 19:15, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
