Administrators' newsletter – April 2017
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2017).

- Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
- The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
- An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
- After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.
- After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
- Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.
Mount Albert
[edit]While researching Allan Kerr Taylor, I found it difficult to distinguish the suburb Mount Albert from the mountain Mount Albert and remember which was which. Could the latter be changed to Mount Albert (volcano) or Mount Albert (mountain)? It seems like a no-brainer, so do we have to go through the Talk page process or can it be fast-tracked? Akld guy (talk) 02:46, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
- Akld guy, given that the current disambiguation is in line with WP:NCNZ, it wouldn't be an uncontroversial move and will thus have to go through a move proposal. Looking at pageviews, there doesn't appear to be a case for a primary topic either. I shall add a hatnote to the volcanic cone article, though. Drop me a note if you start a formal move request. Schwede66 18:31, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
- I won't start a move request. It's not like these are major articles with heavy editing. Many thanks for your edits to Allan Kerr Taylor. Akld guy (talk) 22:05, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
The disrupter IP
[edit]Please look at the contributions by ip 118.82.247.102. These have been highly disruptive and I feel the ip should be blocked. Not for a token period, but for months or indefinitely. Akld guy (talk) 20:30, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to investigate and block. Akld guy (talk) 21:40, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Kathy Lynch
[edit]Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Kathy Lynch you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Aircorn -- Aircorn (talk) 07:41, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
- I have finally had another read through of this article. I was quite liberal with my copy editing so if you feel I have gone too far I won't be offended if you change some things back. If I feel they are relavent to the review I might bring them up on that page though. AIRcorn (talk) 10:15, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
- Any luck? AIRcorn (talk) 11:31, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- Aircorn, sorry, you are a bit cryptic. I haven't had luck with photos - the two photographers did not reply to my emails, but I shall follow up with them. Went to the library on Sunday to look for the 1990 Xerox Challenge reporting and found out that the particular branch of the library that holds the newspapers isn't open on Sundays! Was it one of these you are referring to? Schwede66 19:49, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- Photos are not necessary for a Good Article so not terrible worried about them (would be nice though). More concerned about the early life section. If you can't find anything in the newspapers I guess we will have to just use what we already have. AIRcorn (talk) 21:54, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying, Aircorn. Yes, the reason I went to the library was to try and find something about her early life, as prompted by Simon Kennett's email reply that I added to the GA talk page. I should be able to make it to that library tomorrow. Good to see that Simon has now commented on the discussion directly; that clarifies a few things. Schwede66 18:39, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Basis for granting of autopatrolled user right ?
[edit]A few days ago you granted the autopatrolled right to Silver Master. I am no expert on the inner workings of Wikipedia, but as soon as I saw one of their articles, I asked myself and someone else who was also wondering what level of quality we are striving for at Wikipedia. Since the user in question has now had a significant part of their articles nominated for deletion (and lost the autopatrolled right and been indefinitely blocked as well), I think maybe somewhere someone should consider if we could avoid such blatant blunders in the future. Thanks and best regards. Lklundin (talk) 22:10, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
- Indeed, that doesn't look good. Sorry for that; I shall check more thoroughly in future. Schwede66 22:42, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
Photo of Kathy Lynch
[edit]Hi Tom - sorry I haven't logged on to Wikipedia for ages. Jaquie Phelan emailed me to help reply to your message to her(!) Yes - I can find a good pic of Kathy racing. Great article by the way. She was a phenomenon to race against. Feel free to email me (paul at kennett dot co dot nz) if you want a more direct conversation. Kennett 15 April 2017 —Preceding undated comment added 03:06, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

The nuisance ip
[edit]Please block ip 27.252.172.70. This is the user who has been deleting the same template at Onehunga Branch since July last year. He has been reverted twice in the last day by Pcuser42 and myself. See his edits on the article here. I am in no doubt that he is attacking the article in response to being reverted by myself and Ajf773 at other articles such as Rainbow's End (theme park), Mount Wellington, New Zealand, Te Papapa, List of suburbs of Auckland, Pakuranga, and Botany Downs, where he used ip 27.252.141.245 (see his contribs here).
This nuisance ip appears to be a Filipino who does some useful work, but he creates a heavy workload for editors such as Pcuser42, Ajf773, and myself, because his English is very poor and he does not have a good grasp of Auckland's layout and train network. More than fifty percent of his NZ edits need reverting or modifying in some form, but he simply will not stay away from New Zealand articles despite being asked. Akld guy (talk) 20:04, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
Stalking
[edit]You're not stalking me and my edits are you? Herbert Sutcliffe (health advocate) is an obscure article and I doubt you have it in your watchlist. Akld guy (talk) 19:44, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Akld guy: You are wrong, as it is on my watchlist. I put most of the DNZB article created by Stuartyeates and tagged with notability, prodded, or taken to AfD, onto my watchlist. And had you looked through the article's edit history, you would have figured yourself that it's on my watchlist, as I fixed Hugo999's spelling mistake within 17 minutes (or maybe you are assuming that I'm stalking him as well). Is there any reason you are assuming bad faith? Schwede66 19:51, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- I didn't accuse you, so there was no assumption of bad faith. I asked whether you were stalking me, and it turned out that you did in fact have the article on your watchlist. Why did you assume that I assumed bad faith? Isn't that a bad faith assumption on your part? Akld guy (talk) 20:03, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
- @Akld guy: You asked: "You're not stalking me and my edits are you?" And then you proceeded to explain that you doubt that I have the article on my watchlist. What I would have expected to hear from you is an apology, but I sense none is forthcoming. Schwede66 20:55, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Remove COI tag on page?
[edit]Hi! A while ago you attached a COI alert tag to the Stephanie Dowrick page, which I was the main contributor to. I've just started a thread on the talk page about it. It's been months now without the tag removed and no discussion started as to why it's there. I'm wondering what can be done about removing it, as it does come across like a 'badge of shame'. My understanding is that a discussion should have been started when the tag was attached. I do hope that flagging it here is ok, and not against etiquette. please forgive me if it is. If there are specific issues that you saw in the article and need to be addressed, is it possible for you to point them out on the page? After that, I will seek to make the changes, as it doesn't seem like anyone else is going to. Julietteobrien (talk) 23:30, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
- I've replied on the article's talk page. Schwede66 02:09, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
census
[edit]Hi there, no problem, ive started quite afew census ones and I basically choose them at random..ive started quite a few including the 1851, 1916 census for example.. I don't only start census-topics on new Zealand but got interested in it.. I was looking for the more recent censuses like the 1961 or 1966 census online but those are nowhere to be found..i had trouble finding info on the 1851 census but searched as much as I could..Faith16 (talk) 18:10, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
- Faith16, are you based in New Zealand? Because if you are, every good-size library should have census information on their shelves. Schwede66 18:52, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
Hi, no I'm not, I haven't made it yet to New Zealand but one day(:..well, yeah a library would be a good idea but could be tricky even if I had access to one as Wikipedia needs online reliable sources..there must be a reason why NZ hasn't released the data online as they have done with their 1871-1916 censuses..Strange cause the Australian censuses are all available online for example...not to worry, but will use what we have acesss too, these articles take ages to put together too...Faith16 (talk) 18:06, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
- Faith16, offline sources are just as good as online sources. Schwede66 00:19, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Nuisance ip
[edit]An example of the idiotic English used by the nuisance ip who has been plaguing Auckland railway and mall articles for months here. This is almost certainly the same editor who changed the name of Westfield Junction to Otahuhu Junction in an article after the Westfield Station closed, apparently reasoning that the name should change to the next nearest station!!
I had hoped that you would be proactive in dealing with this nuisance, but have come to accept that you may not live in Auckland and have no interest in what happens here, let alone in the disruptive edits taking place at its railway articles. If you don't want to be proactive with this nuisance, please say so and I'll go elsewhere for help. If it were up to me, I'd block this editor for a day whenever he changes ip address and makes another stupid edit. Akld guy (talk) 02:34, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
- Akld guy Yes, I find you somewhat uncooperative and given that Wikipedia works by people collaborating, that's not helpful. You can also be a touch abrasive in your communication. That may result in me assigning higher priorities to other issues, and you may indeed get more action more quickly from other admins. Schwede66 05:29, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
- OK. No worries. Akld guy (talk) 05:38, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
FISA profile merges
[edit]Hey Schwede66, in December you were in contact with World Rowing (FISA) regarding their database and potential duplicates. Their database engineer promised to have a look at the issue until end of January. Did you ever got any further reply from him? As far as I can see the dupes are still all there, but I’m not sure whether they don’t want to merge, or just forgot to solve this problem. Regards, MisterSynergy (talk) 08:44, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
- MisterSynergy, I hadn't noticed. Will follow up with my FISA contact. Schwede66 19:49, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

- Karanacs • Berean Hunter • GoldenRing • Dlohcierekim
- Gdr • Tyrenius • JYolkowski • Longhair • Master Thief Garrett • Aaron Brenneman • Laser brain • JzG • Dragons flight
- An RfC has clarified that user categories should be emptied upon deletion, but redlinked user categories should not be removed if re-added by the user.
- Discussions are ongoing regarding proposed changes to the COI policy. Changes so far have included clarification that adding a link on a Wikipedia forum to a job posting is not a violation of the harassment policy.
- You can now see a list of all autoblocks at Special:AutoblockList.
- There is a new tool for adding archives to dead links. Administrators are able to restrict other user's ability to use the tool, and have additional permissions when changing URL and domain data.
- Administrators, bureaucrats and stewards can now set an expiry date when granting user rights. (discuss, permalink)
- Following an RfC, the editing restrictions page is now split into a list of active restrictions and an archive of those that are old or on inactive accounts. Make sure to check both pages if searching for a restriction.
Harvey Wilson
[edit]Hi Schwede,
Harvey is listed as NZ Olympian number 381 [1] but did not compete in 1976. There are a number of people listed as Olympians by the NZOC who never competed, while some, like Harvey, competed at a later Olympics after being selected, but not competing, at an earlier one. Apologies if you were already aware of this. You might be interested in this list I compiled of all NZ Olympians, according to the NZOC list, prior to summer 1984 (I'll add later Games, eventually). Cheers, DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 08:47, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
- No, I didn't know that, DerbyCountyinNZ. Thanks for the link; good stuff. You might have seen that I'm going through the Summer Olympics articles in preparation of navboxes. If you've got sources for the above, why not add some prose to the article? Schwede66 08:50, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Kathy Lynch
[edit]The article Kathy Lynch you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Kathy Lynch for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. New Page Review - Newsletter No.4
[edit]Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 804 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!
But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.
Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

- An RfC proposing an off-wiki LTA database has been closed. The proposal was broadly supported, with further discussion required regarding what to do with the existing LTA database and defining access requirements. Such a tool/database formed part of the Community health initiative's successful grant proposal.
- Some clarifications have been made to the community banning and unblocking policies that effectively sync them with current practice. Specifically, the community has reached a consensus that when blocking a user at WP:AN or WP:ANI, it is considered a "community sanction", and administrators cannot unblock unilaterally if the user has not successfully appealed the sanction to the community.
- An RfC regarding the bot policy has closed with changes to the section describing restrictions on cosmetic changes.
- Users will soon be able to blacklist specific users from sending them notifications.
- Following the 2017 elections, the new members of the Board of Trustees include Raystorm, Pundit and Doc James. They will serve three-year terms.

Are you planning anything for other bridges? Johnragla (talk) 20:16, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Johnragla, I was just tidying up the template. I sometimes write about items listed by Heritage New Zealand. Category I has inherent notability, but Category II doesn't, so notability needs to be shown. Setting up redirects is something that I commonly do, given that users of Wikipedia may type in that term. With regards to the Narrows Bridge being a standalone article or not, if you aren't sure about it, I'd start it as a section of the SH21 article first. Once your work shows that it justifies its own article, you can just copy your work to the new article (make a note in the edit summary for attribution purposes, even if it's your own work). With regards to title, I set up Narrows Bridge, Tamahere but have no idea whether that disambiguator is the most suitable. But it's not important, as an article can always be moved. The important question is to have an article in the first instance. Schwede66 21:02, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. Johnragla (talk) 03:32, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
