Request for pronunciation

[edit]

Dear Schwa dk! I would like to ask you to add the Danish IPA pronunciation to the name of Karl Albert Hasselbalch who is widely know for the Henderson–Hasselbalch equation, however, his name is often miswritten as Hasselbach (without "l") and pronounced like the German word/surname Bach. I have little idea of the correct pronunciation, Danish phonology gives little info on the "ch" phoneme, it says it occurs in foreign words. There's an authentic pronunciation here, but I don't know how reliable this site is. Hope you can help. Cheers, Timur lenk (talk) 21:44, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also if you could help with Johannes Nicolaus Brønsted. Thank you, Timur lenk (talk) 21:58, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you could also help with Johan Kjeldahl. Timur lenk (talk) 23:52, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the requests. I've added transcriptions of the names. The Forvo example is very reliable and it corresponds largely to the transcription I've given. There is also an actual pronunciation of Brønsted on Forvo: http://forvo.com/word/johannes_nicolaus_br%C3%B8nsted. --Schwa dk (talk) 10:16, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, thank you! Can you help with the phonetics of other Nordic languages? Timur lenk (talk) 00:03, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid I can't do that with a sufficient degree of certainty. --Schwa dk (talk) 09:06, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do you pronounce Ragnhild Søndergård? 46.161.104.142 (talk) 11:56, 30 April 2012 (UTC)Gossamer Thread[reply]

[ʁɑʊ̯nhil ˈsønɐg̊ɒːˀ]--Schwa dk (talk) 13:14, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you add the pronunciation for Maersk?

Done

Hello, Schwa dk! Could you also add the pronunciations for H. C. ØrstedSweyn ForkbeardPeter SchmeichelSofie GråbølSidse Babett Knudsen and check Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Helle Thorning-Schmidt? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.100.22.126 (talk) 10:14, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done, except for Sweyn Forkbeard which isn't a Danish name. His Danish name 'Svend Tveskæg' is pronounced [svɛn ˈtˢvesg̊ɛːˀg̊]. --Schwa dk (talk) 07:00, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Does /kaːɔˈliːnə vɔsniˈaːki/ make any sense for Caroline Wozniacki in terms of how the Danes pronounce it? I can't decipher this Forvo pronunciation, even though it's crystal-clear.

In the transcription standard used here I would transcribe it /kɑoˈliːnə vʌsniˈɑki/. The a/ɑ distinction is quite salient in Danish. The quality of the other unstressed vowels is less salient and somewhat debatable. In the Forvo pronunciation the speaker indeed seems a little longer than normal ɑː in the second stressed syllable. However, I would say it's still within the scope of how a stressed, phonologically short /ɑ/ could be pronounced. --Schwa dk (talk) 08:57, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, your does make more sense.
And also, why is it more correct to use a glottal stop symbol for stød that, say, a creaky voice diacritic?
Mainly because of conventions. The stød can be realised as creaky voice, glottal stop, tone or diphthongization among others, or not at all, depending on dialect and style. In a sort of catch-all transcription it is therefore by convention transcribed as a (raised) glottal stop.--Schwa dk (talk) 08:57, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see! Would it somehow be possible to add these realizations in the appropriate section of the Danish phonology article, also adding the tone marks similar to the way they were added to the Swedish phonology? Which one of these realizations is a neutral one, found perhaps in careful theatre speech or in some newsreaders?
Yes, it would be possible. I'll look for some reliable source and transcriptions. I guess the neutral (whatever that may mean) realization would be a sort of glide from increasingly creaky voice to glottal stop.--Schwa dk (talk) 12:27, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, a glide from creaky to a glottal stop. Complicated. Also, a transcription found in the article on Danish phonology has been mentioned John Wells's phonetic blog in the comments as wrong, of the word Strøget. It seems 'impronouncable'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.238.215.134 (talk) 09:23, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you add the pronunciation for Ejnar Hertzsprung and tell me how do you pronounce 'Hovmöller'?

Done. Hovmöller is pronounced Danish pronunciation: [ˈhɒwmølˀɐ].--Schwa dk (talk) 22:11, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic! Could you add it to Theophil Hansen? Thank you so much!
No problem. --Schwa dk (talk) 21:21, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you add the pronunciation for Gøsta Esping-Andersen? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.121.17.76 (talk) 12:06, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Sorry for the delay. Gøsta is not a common name in Denmark, so I had to check with others.--Schwa dk (talk) 18:13, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's very nice of you! How do you pronounce Niels Arden Oplev? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.175.118.31 (talk) 19:02, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the pronunciation on the page.--Schwa dk (talk) 11:50, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Martin sv 85 (talk) 09:43, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Since you know how to transcribe Danish in IPA, could you add the Danish transcription on Tórshavn and check the transcription on Bertel Thorvaldsen, please? It's most certainly wrong in some way. Mr KEBAB (talk) 17:50, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I added IPA on Thorshavn. Bertel Thorvaldsen seems fine as it is --Schwa dk (talk) 10:41, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Because I fixed it :P Thanks. Mr KEBAB (talk) 11:39, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Could you also check Frederiksberg and Jesper Grønkjær? Mr KEBAB (talk) 01:02, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. There you go. --Schwa dk (talk) 10:45, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Mr KEBAB (talk) 12:53, 12 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Schwa! Just saw that the richest Dane, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, doesn’t have a pronunciation of his name on the page! Could you correct the omission? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.200.205.25 (talk) 08:09, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
While we're at it, Kristiansen's birthplace (Billund) probably has a wrong IPA transcription. Can you check that? Mr KEBAB (talk) 09:38, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Done! --Schwa dk (talk) 08:29, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you provide the full IPA of Football Club København on F.C. Copenhagen? Mr KEBAB (talk) 17:25, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have never ever heard anyone say Football Club København out loud. It's allways F.C. København [ˈɛf ˈseːˀ kʰøb̥m̩ˈhɑʊ̯n]. Since Football Club is English, there is no canonical Danish pronunciation. Danes would simply use the best English pronunciation they master. Perhaps you could go with the English IPA, /fʊtbɔːl klʌb/, but I'm not sure mixing Danish and English IPA is a good idea here. The closest Danish equivalent would be [fud̥b̥ɒːl kʰlʌb̥], but that's not really a recommended pronunciation. So, not really sure what to do ;) --Schwa dk (talk) 07:34, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Maybe a note that says that "Football Club København" is not used in spoken Danish will be sufficient. By the way, is København in F.C. København different from København in isolation? I can see that the stress is different, and there's no stød in the third syllable. Mr KEBAB (talk) 11:05, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think such a note would be sufficient. And the stress was an error. Sorry about that :) --Schwa dk (talk) 08:39, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Schwa! Could you add the pronunciation for Bang & Olufsen? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.87.226.107 (talk) 10:09, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

dansk

[edit]
  • I'm a bit confused by the pronunciation of the vowel in dansk. Every time I've heard it pronounced by Danish speakers, it has been a definite [ɛ] or [æ], and it seems possible that the letter <a> can make such vowel sounds. Do you know why we are using an [a]? Is this a broad transcription? Wolfdog (talk) 19:59, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I understand your confusion if you're accustomed to English IPA. Transcriptions of Danish pronounciationa on Wikipedia uses the standard notation used by Danish scolars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_Danish, also see e.g. Grønnum, Nina. 1998. Illustrations of the IPA: Danish. Journal of the International Phonetic Association, 28 (1 & 2), 99-105). This includes slight departures from strict IPA, which is common in the usage of IPA in most languages, including English. Since Danish distinguish more front vowels than English, the entire repertoire of vowel characters [i e ɛ æ a ɑ] is used for convenience, rather than using diacritcs (strict IPA perhaps corresponding to [i e̝ e ɛ æ ɑ̈]). As a consequence, since both English and Danish use slight simplification of strict IPA, the vowel in dansk might very well correspond to [ɛ] or [æ] in English transcription standards, while it is transcribed [a] in the Danish transcription standard.--Schwa dk (talk) 07:56, 25 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You should add that broad/narrow table to the article on Danish phonology that used to be present in the IPA for Danish. It would clarify a lot.
I'll see what I can do. --Schwa dk (talk) 21:21, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Queen's Danish

Oops. I've posted a question in the IPA for Danish instead of here. Could you take a look? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.12.47.192 (talk) 13:44, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Danish phonology and how it's (not) sourced

[edit]

Take a look at Danish_phonology#Further_reading. There are 10 books/papers that, presumably, were used as a base for the "Prosody" section, maybe also other ones. The thing is, you need to provide inline citations, with exact page(s) indicated. If you have time, please fix the article. — Peter238 (v̥ɪˑzɪʔ mɑˑɪ̯ tˢʰoˑk̚ pʰɛˑɪ̯d̥ʒ̊) 07:59, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The same applies to Stød (no footnotes) and Dania transcription (no sources whatsoever). — Peter238 (v̥ɪˑzɪʔ mɑˑɪ̯ tˢʰoˑk̚ pʰɛˑɪ̯d̥ʒ̊) 08:46, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, for some reason I thought you were responsible for the lack of sources, when it was mostly other users. Anyway, we still need to fix that. — Peter238 (v̥ɪˑzɪʔ mɑˑɪ̯ tˢʰoˑk̚ pʰɛˑɪ̯d̥ʒ̊) 22:58, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
