Review #1

Lead Section - Good overall high-level summary of the language. It might be useful to include an infobox, the number of current speakers of the language, and a geographical map of the region the language is spoken in.

Phonology Vowels and Consonants - Good use of the tables to show the vowels and consonants, they are informative and concise.

Phonology Syllable Structure - Good formatting of examples. Is it possible to find an example of a CVCV stem and add it to the table of examples?

Phonology Stress - Is it possible to find an example of when the stress falls on the second-to-last syllable, and when stress falls on this final syllable in words with final long vowels? Also, does the language make use of tone?

Morphology Affixation and Clitics Section - Very informative, and easy to comprehend. Maybe consider including an example for the Absolutive (Non-Case) Suffixes section. In the Derivational Affixes section, consider adding wikipedia links for terminology such as "nominalizers" and "complementizers"

Syntax Basic Word Order - Good examples showing the free word order. Does the grammar include a percentage breakdown of how often each kind of word order occurs?

Syntax Headedness - Good and clear examples of each head and complement pair type. The second draft could cover more head and complement pair types if available in the grammar (e.g. Adposition and Noun Phrase).

Holistic feedback - Overall the page is structured well and its contents are thorough and go beyond the bare minimum in practicum preps. Reads logically throughout, and the ordering and use of subsections is effective as a whole. One area to note: should the case and agreement section be a part of the morphology or syntax section?

Lead

[edit]

Informative introduction that provides background on the origin history and current status of Kawaiisu. It may help to include the time period during which it was spoken, and when it went extinct.4 “Kawaiisu is typologically notable for its highly complex word structure and morphology.”, may be rewritten as “Kawaiisu is notable for its highly complex word structure and morphology.”

Phonology

[edit]

As you mentioned, the IPA chart can be improved in formatting—fiddling with visual editor works as well as the code posted on Piazza. The height column and places of articulation columns of the vowels and consonants charts should be bolded. In the consonant section, the sentence, “These consonants fall across 6 manners of articulation and 6 places of articulation.” should be written as “These consonants fall across six manners of articulation and six places of articulation.”

This section goes beyond the basic information gathered from course assignments in terms of the Syllable Structure and Stress sections. In Syllable Structure, ‘occasional’ in the following sentence should be changed to ‘occasionally’: “Consonant clusters never occur at the beginning of native words, although they do occur internally with some frequency and occasional at the beginning of Spanish loanwords.” An area of confusion was in the sentence, “No words begin with vowels in Kawaiisu, although the V syllable structure is possible for affixes and clitics.” Does this mean that V occurs in affixes and clitics that sometimes go in front of words? An example of CVCV may also be a good addition!

For the stress section, this sentence, “Stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable for words in Kawaiisu.”, can be rewritten as “Stress usually falls on the penultimate syllable for words in Kawaiisu.”, and the use of “penultimate” later in the section can be omitted.

Morphology

[edit]

The “Inflectional Affixes” subheading should be made bigger than that of its subcategories, absolutive suffixes and plural marking. Plural marking, nominative/accusative case system, nominalizer, and complementizer, should be linked as they are technical terms. The charts of plural construction and accusative suffixation are very helpful!

Syntax

[edit]

It may be helpful to organize all the examples of different word orders into charts. In Headedness, this sentence can be reworded to have a more neutral tone: “However, the free word order of the language, as well as its frequent use of clitics, complicates this picture significantly.”. A suggestion: “However, this is complicated by the free word order of the language and its frequent clitics usage.

Overall

[edit]

A very informative first draft! All the sections are completed, and there is a cohesive flow. As for repetition, 'complication due to free word order' is repeated in the initial blurb in Headedness as well as in “Verb + Object Noun Phrase”, and one can be removed. The information appears in their respective sections, and the overall article is balanced. The lead should be concise with only the relevant information, and every other section had relevant explanations and examples. The article’s greatest strengths are in the examples and the accompanying clear explanations. Improvements that can be made includes formatting, rephrasing, and adding more explanations to the lead and example in the syllable structure section(mentioned above).
