Shake your manly hand
Wow. What a cool remark to make. I totally respect you as a writer and as a scientist by the way (I googled your publications when you sent me an email with your name). I like to rip tits a little, cause that is...how I am. I just am used to that sort of interaction in science and the military. Just makes things more fun.
I remember that remark you made to TTT saying you could be motivated by stickers. What I really like about it, was that you were honest about something where others deny it. BTW, I would hope we could make things POSITIVE, not just negative (iow, not "stop doing low hit count", but "start doing high hit count"). Of course it comes to the same thing if you think about time usage just being shifted. But I just like the mindset more of encouraging people, rather than demeaning them (I may want to tease the Somerset Cricket club guy though).
In terms of your point on display...I think a display at FA, like in a table at the top, showing the articles and their hit counts would be a nice graphic that might influence behavior. Sandy is so set in her ways though...and so concentrated on firefighting and working harder like Boxer...rather than thinking about strategy...she would probably not go for it. (Like I hate that page with all the stuff on the same place and running in just a list. GA is way nicer in having candidates in categories, in having the reviews on different pages.) That said, there are easy ways to do things ad hoc without needing to go through consensus and all. Like a self made ladder board. Or even just ad hoc set of barnstar. "you promoted a 10,000 view per month article".
Again...thanks...I was expecting some discipline when I saw the orange...and instead it was a very kind comment.
Keep up the great work you do on/off Wiki! 71.246.147.40 (talk) 08:44, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- I was a wiki-noob when I wrote that comment; last year's WikiCup showed me the dark side of the "reward mentality" that Sandy complains about (with good reason) so often. Truth is, I'm a competitive person, and I enjoy competing with other like-minded people (such as other Wikipedia editors, or in a past life before fatherhood, chess players) as a means to push the self harder and accomplish more than one might do otherwise. Problem with the WikiCup (for those who are trying to win it) is it boils down to who can pump out the highest volume of content that few will read (and thus marginal benefit to Wikipedia). I've been thinking about an "elite" version, where points can only be gained from bring core/vital topics to GA/FA... but I imagine there would be little interest. Most people are here to work on their narrow topics areas (including me for the most part), and there's nothing really wrong with that; but I do think it's a good idea to brainstorm about ways to improve the "important" and/or highly viewed articles. Sasata (talk) 09:09, 15 October 2011 (UTC) (p.s. your analysis of FAC hit counts has convinced me that I should review Australian Cattle Dog). Sasata (talk) 09:11, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- Something simple like 1 point for a GA/FL, 2 points for an FA and multiply by hit count. And have a laddar board. I guess divide it for co-noms. I think a laddar board would work better than a Cup. I would want a bot to help with checking pageviews, but I think it could be made tractable. Checking on lower categories, project assinged is too tricky. But those are all controlled and organized.
- I don't know how specific your interests are, but would think that if you like biology, that there are popular animals or diseases or the like. Even within mushrooms, there are some on the VA list. See here: [1]. And VAs are usually very high hit count also. See here: [2]. Just prowling around there, truffle is a B, for instance.71.246.147.40 (talk) 09:26, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yep, every one of those fungus articles is on my "To-do" list, or has already been started in a file here on my hard drive. Unfortunately, I'm the kind of person who can't work too long uninterrupted on one thing, or it becomes more like work and less like play (and I'm mostly on Wiki to feed my play!) so I usually work offline on articles as the muse dictates, and then dump here when I think it's ready—excuse the metaphor :). I like your idea of a ladder board, but I suspect that ultimately it will be "politically incorrect" to make article development into a competition (but c'mon, it's fun!) Maybe Wikiproject CORE? I'd sign on for that. Sasata (talk) 09:45, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Carlos Castaneda
Hi Sasata -- I think it is probably inappropriate to call him an anthropologist. He did get a Ph.D., but his dissertation was basically a work of fiction, as it turned out (although he never admitted it). Looie496 (talk) 15:26, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Hello, a fungus is is need of help
Hello Sasata, I have been told your the mushroom guru of Wikipedia and thought I could appeal to you for help. I have found a genus of fungus, Spathularia, that desperately needs help and I have been working on expanding it. I have very little knowledge of fungi and was hoping you could guide me through all of the unfamiliar vocabulary and to good references. If you could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 22:01, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Krustev, another Jimmy Butler protégé? Sure, I can help. For starters, check out the MycoBank page on the genus here. This has a short description of characteristics of the genus, which you could try to translate from mycological jargon into plain English (I can help with terms you get stuck on), and put in a "description" section. Try not to focus so much on specific details of each species, but more about the genus. In the meantime, I'll put together a literature list and add it to the talk page; some sources will be obscure and very difficult to get (interlibrary loans may be the way to go), some will be in foreign languages, but others I will have access to and could email you directly. Is a good article nomination the eventual goal? Sasata (talk) 22:31, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
- I would like to get the article to FA if possible, along with the help of my group mates and all of the people in the Wikipedia community. I will defiantly need help with the terms, the asci? I have no idea. I know some french, but not enough to make a difference in a scientific journal. Thank you so much for the help.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 02:43, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
- FAC will be tough... this will definitely require getting the obscure/foreign language sources. Take a look at Cyathus for an example of a genus-level fungus article to get a feel at what the final product might look like (Spathularia would probably only have about 20 references though, from what I've seen in a quick literature search.) I'll try to have a literature list up on the article talk page by tomorrow to allow ample time to track down sources. Perhaps what I'll do while you're working on the genus article is bring each of the species articles to GA level; this will make it easier to find and organize information. Sasata (talk) 03:23, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

- What is a good FA article on mushrooms? I think I have decided on Boletus bicolor for the article. I did a quick search for references and found it is used in many kinds of food and seems to have a good amount of references.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 00:19, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I think all the FAs on mushrooms are good! See Category:FA-Class Fungi articles. Also, check out Boletus frostii, Boletus mirabilis, Boletus pinophilus, Boletus pulcherrimus, and Boletus zelleri , which are good articles on species in the same genus; you might want to peruse them for some guidance on how to structure your article. Sasata (talk) 15:16, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
- I was planning on following the same template they have. Thanks for the examples.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 23:31, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
- What would you recommend as some good resources? I have found plenty of little references that i can get a few sentences out of but not any substantial articles or anything.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 01:09, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- Krustev: I will do a literature search tonight, and post the results on the talk page. I'll be able to email you a number of the sources as PDFs. Sasata (talk) 01:38, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you. The help is much appreciated.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 15:04, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- I have been having trouble finding information on the discovery and history on the two colored bolete, do you know of any good places to look? Also, I've been following the ga articles you recommended as examples and I think I have covered most of the information other than discovery and history, if you could give it a once over and tell me what needs what i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for the help.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 00:27, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, give me a day or two, and I'll do a mini peer review. Taxonomy could be tricky for this species, I'll have to dig into the literature. Sasata (talk) 06:52, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- I have been looking through the article and I think all of the necessary information for GA is there, except for the taxonomy. I have been digging around and can find nothing on the taxonomy but the taxonomy of the similar species. I would assume that it is similar. Any other kind of information you think it needs? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krustev LeMont (talk • contribs) 00:42, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- I think the taxonomy of this species may be tricky... I'll add a brief section in the next couple of days, and then I agree, you should be about ready for a GA nomination. Sasata (talk) 16:03, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- What references do you know of that would be a good place to look?--Krustev LeMont (talk) 20:39, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- How do i site mycobank for the preferred name? All that comes up when i search are books on it. I also don't quite understand what you meant with the names and how to credit them.--Krustev LeMont (talk) 01:20, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Hey, Sasata. You recently left a number of suggestions for improvement at the ACD's FAC, as did I. It appears to me that most or all of your suggestions have been acted on. Interview with Wikimedia Foundation
Hello Sasata, I hope you're well. My name is Aaron and I'm one of the Storytellers working on the 2011 fundraiser here at the Wikimedia Foundation. For this year's campaign we're seeking out and interviewing active Wikipedians like yourself, in order to produce a broader and more representative range of "personal appeals" to run come November. If you'd like to participate in this project, please email me at amuszalskiwikimedia.org. Interviews are typically conducted by phone or Skype and take between 30-90 minutes. (Note: This invitation is open to any interested Wikipedian — If you're reading this, and would like to be interviewed as well, please contact me.) Thanks! Giraffe
Hello. Would you be able to peer review the giraffe article? Thank you. LittleJerry (talk) 19:24, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
- Hmmm... I'm reluctant to get into this yet; for such an well-known topic, the article appears too short, and it seems like many more hours of research and revisions should be applied before broaching FAC territory. Have you visited a library and consulted all available relevant textbooks? Have you performed an exhaustive search of scholarly literature? This is what the article needs at this point, and I'd rather spend time PRing an article that was more developed (see criteria 1b and 1c). Sorry, but free time is precious... if the article was about a mushroom, that'd be a different story :) Sasata (talk) 19:58, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Re:Page move
Done. I also left a note on the user's talk pages. I could merge the histories, but it would probably cause considerable confusion for no real benefit in this particular case- there are three separate page histories, but only one of them really has anything substantial. J Milburn (talk) 17:31, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
- Scratch that, all the histories in one place. Article's unaffected, but if you look through for whatever reason, that's why it's all over the place. J Milburn (talk) 17:39, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

- No problem, I figured the article could use another pic. Looks like the FAC is going pretty well; the strength of a FA is largely influenced by who shows up at the FAC, and I think there's a pretty good crowd there! Sasata (talk) 15:03, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Laetiporus
Hi. Re this edit; your addition seems to duplicate content on Laetiporus. I am not so into phylogenetics and I don't know where this data should be; could you consider replacing this content in one of the two articles and replace it by a link to the other? I think duplicate content of this type is better avoided. Han-Kwang (t) 15:22, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
- I'll fix the problem by expanding the phylogenetics section in the genus article in the next week. Sasata (talk) 16:04, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
In case you're interested...
There's a great picture identified as Thelephora palmata currently at FPC on Commons. If the ID's good and it could find a nice home on enwp, I'd say it would have a strong chance at FPC. I may get around to it at some point myself, but I thought I'd let you know anyway. J Milburn (talk) 21:49, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Psilocybe washingtonensis
Why does it say "Source Template:MushroomObserver" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Psilocybe.washingtonensis.gsharpnolack.jpg ?
Great work wrt mushrooms. You saved me literally ten thousand hours of work.
Alan Rockefeller (Talk - contribs) 02:29, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Alan, thanks for uploading (and identifying at MO) that picture. The Mushroom Observer template only works at Wikimedia Commons. If you'd like I can transfer that picture there. While you're here, I was wondering if you could help with some images of Psilocybe tampanensis of Workman's that you uploaded (File:Psilocybe.tampanensis.one.jpg, File:Psilocybe.tampanensis.two.jpg, and File:Psilocybe.tampanensis.spores.jpg). I'm having the article assessed for GA review here, and the reviewer has noted that there's no indication that Workman has released the images under a license compatible for Wikipedia use. I don't suppose there's any way that you could confirm that he's okay with releasing these images (under a CC-by-SA-3.0 license), or failing that, have him contact me either here or by email? It would be a shame to have to remove the pics, but that might have to happen to promote the article. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer, and thanks for your kind words—I have a "to-do" list of about 400 fungal taxa articles I want to improve (and it keeps growing all the time, argh), including many of the "shroomy" articles, so I'll be here for a while. Sasata (talk) 02:57, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- Workman gave me permission to use his images on mushroomobserver.org under CC-by-SA-3.0 and on wikipedia. I can have him email you if that would help. Alan Rockefeller (Talk - contribs) 05:24, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- That would be great if you could do ask him to do that. To avoid having to do this in the future he could give blanket permission for all the CC-by-SA-3.0 images created by him that are already at Commons. There's this page which gives the common email templates. He could email me and I would forward his message to OTRS, or he could email OTRS directly. Thanks again for helping with this! Sasata (talk) 06:24, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- You should have the email from Workman, sent through mushroomobserver.org. 18:50, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks Alan, the licensing has all been sorted out. Sasata (talk) 16:04, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Psilocybe tampanensis
On 14 December 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Psilocybe tampanensis, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the rare magic mushroom Psilocybe tampanensis (pictured) was found after its discoverer skipped a "boring taxonomic conference" to go mushroom hunting? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Psilocybe tampanensis. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. File:Collybia-platyphylla.jpg Another potential FP without a species article. Just thought I'd share. I'll put it on my to-do list, but you're more than welcome to jump in, if you like. J Milburn (talk) 11:30, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
- Due to limited time, I think that, for the next couple of weeks at least, I'm gonna try to stick to preparing two articles for "publication". I may work on the genus page though, now that there's a nice pic in there! Sasata (talk) 15:23, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
- Now, they're articles worthy of careful attention- I look forward to seeing them at FAC, if that's the goal! I may be able to find some time for M. platyphylla myself over the next few weeks- we'll see. J Milburn (talk) 22:59, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
resource request
Hi Sasata,
I've uploaded the article on Pharmacogenetics that you requested at the resource exchange. You can find a link to the article on that page. Best, GabrielF (talk) 18:12, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Season's greetings
Merry Christmas | |
From me, a happy NSW Xmas bush Xmas from down here in Oz (damn, should have 5x expanded that for this Xmas...is there still time I wonder....) Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:27, 25 December 2011 (UTC) |
- Thanks Cas! It's unseasonably warm here for this time of year, a veritably balmy +3 °C! BTW, I got that interlibrary loan for the French toxicology paper I'd mentioned on T. pardinum talk; will type up some paragraphs for translation soonish. Best, Sasata (talk) 02:14, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- tres bien - I left a few queries about the taxo section so whenever. Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:07, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Psilocybe yungensis
On 27 December 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Psilocybe yungensis, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the psychedelic mushroom Psilocybe yungensis (pictured) is used in mystic rituals by the Mazatecs? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Psilocybe yungensis. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. A disgusting opportunity for a plant-fungus crossover DYK
Fear not! I can nominate the hook-rich plant Juncus roemerianus several ways; but we got the fixins for an obscene fungus hook in the article too: "The new ascomycete species Aquamarina speciosa, Keissleriella rara, Massarina carolinensis, and Paraphaeosphaeria pilleata were described from this rush.[1]"
Just a heads up to mess with your mushroom OCD ;) Rcej (Robert) – talk 10:20, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- Shame on you for exploiting my weakness for obscure fungal taxa... I can do it, but will need at least a coupladays, maybe until the new year (busy with guests staying over, etc.). Sasata (talk) 18:13, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- Rcej, I just started working on these 4 articles, so will hopefully have them up to DYK-standards by morrow's end. Sasata (talk) 22:43, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
- Cool... that'll rock! Happy 2012 to you, lad; and be sure to eat black-eyed peas on New Year's day!! :) Rcej (Robert) – talk 04:05, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
- Done Not the most fascinating fungi I've ever written about, but at least I'll have a better idea of the identity of the rush culm scum next time I wade through a North Carolinian salt marsh ... Sasata (talk) 03:14, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
- Awesome! Big thanks and kudos! And here I go.... Rcej (Robert) – talk 03:28, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Paper in Systematic Botany
Hi Sas (and stalkers!) can anyone access this paper: Simon, R.; Fuentes, A. F.; Spooner, D. M. (2011). "Biogeographic Implications of the Striking Discovery of a 4,000 Kilometer Disjunct Population of the Wild Potato Solanum morelliforme in South America". Systematic Botany. 36 (4): 1062. doi:10.1600/036364411X605065. ? A copy to smartsewiki [at] gmail.com would be great!
- Done
- Thanks! Can't resist the urge to write an article about a potato species that grows in trees! SmartSE (talk) 19:41, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
Also, I've been keeping an eye on the changes to psilocybin and it is coming along nicely. SmartSE (talk) 18:47, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- I'm still hoping to get it submitted to FAC this year ... need to address a couple more of your points, then a copyedit, then off to the races! Sasata (talk) 19:39, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- Good luck - I think it should be a relatively smooth process. SmartSE (talk) 19:41, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
