September 2008

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from Goa Carnival, a page you have created yourself. If you do not believe the page should be deleted, you can place a {{hangon}} tag on the page, under the existing speedy deletion tag (please do not remove the speedy deletion tag), and make your case on the page's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. Superflewis (talk) 09:00, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Christmas food

Hi. I hope you didn't mind me editing your articles somewhat - but Wikipedia has various guidelines about what isn't supposed to be covered by an article (see WP:NOT), and recipies are specifically excluded. However, I didn't want to lose everything, so thought this was the best compromise :-) CultureDrone (talk) 13:31, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Who of the Indian writers.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Who of the Indian writers.jpg. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Additionally, if you continue uploading bad images, you may be blocked from uploading. STBotI (talk) 10:08, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I can help you. In fact I am going to put it in the article. Thanks, Kensplanet (talk) 13:44, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

I have put the statistics in the Goan Catholics#Modern era sub section. Those statistics are of the 1960's. Proof is here (http://books.google.com/books?id=vA62AAAAIAAJ&q=mangaloreans+25000&dq=mangaloreans+25000&pgis=1) . Thanks, Kensplanet (talk) 14:05, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
I am just glancing through the article after many days. You have done a good work. You deserve an award for this. Please put it up on the userpage.
The Original Barnstar
I, Kensplanet award Sanfy this Original Barnstar for his excellent contributions to the Goan Catholics article. Good work !!! KensplanetTalkE-mailContributions 14:15, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Reversion

I have reverted your edits to the Mumbai page, as the content was a duplicate of an article. In addition, cities of India must follow the structure outlined in Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian cities. Also, could you please use an edit summary when saving a page? Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:45, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Mumbai Has been launched. We were wondering if you could be a member of the Wikiproject. If you would like to join this Wikiproject, then you can click this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mumbai/Members&action=edit). Proposed deletion of Lorna, Goa

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Lorna, Goa, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Climate Chart

I have never seen a climate chart for a state. Climate charts are basically for cities and not states. I doubt anyone can find a climate chart for goa. I think you better contact User:Nichalp for this. He already had Goa featured on Wikipedia earlire; although the article is now no longer a featured article on WIkipedia. Thankyou, Kensplanet (talk) 16:29, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, no climate chart availaible for Margao from reliable sources. Either, the city is small or the population is low. But climate statistics are available for Panjim from Weatherbase, a reliable site at http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3?s=431920&refer= Do you want a climate chart for Panjim. Salcette taluk

I have redirected Salcette taluk to Salcette as there is already an article on the same subject. Sometimes it seems like an article is not present but it may be present in another name. In other cases the topic is not sufficinet in itself to necessiate a seprate article and can redirect or be merged with another existing article. --Deepak D'Souza 05:12, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, the History section is not up to the mark. I'll give you some comments on how you can improve the article. However, I appreciate the work done.

LEAD
Goan Catholics (Konkani: Goiche Katholik) - are Roman Catholics from the former Portuguese colony of Goa, a region on the west coast of India. They are Konkani people and speak Konkani as their mother-tongue. [When you say they speak Konkani, it is auto-implied it's their mothertongue. Wikipedia is not interested in stomach tongues and other languages spoken] Almost all Catholics in Goa are converts to the religion, and the society is marked by a caste-system. Conversions to Catholicism were seen mainly after the start of Portuguese rule in the area, particularly along the central coast, which Lisbon ruled from the early to mid sixteenth century onwards.[This is redundancy. The first line of the lead already means Goa was a Portuguese colony. Repetition not allowed] The total population of the community is estimated to be around 2 million.[1][6][7]

Most of the ancestors of Goan Catholics, were Saraswat Brahmins, who had migrated to Goa via Magadha in Gangetic India from Aryavarta, in the north-western part of the Indian sub-continent, mainly due to the withering of the River Saraswati.[Too. much details. Please cut it short. Lead must not have so much details] Their culture is a blend of Portugese and Indian cultures. After the Portuguese arrived Goa in 1510, they adopted the Portuguese culture but retained their Hindu caste system and few other customs and traditions. The Goa Inquisition and the Portugese-Maratha wars were the most disconsolate memories in their history, which drove many Goan Catholics to the neibhouring regions of Mangalore, Karwar in Karnataka and Sawantwadi in Maharashtra.

Their architecture and music encompass some of the notable contributions to India and the world. Their Cashew Feni and contributions to Konkani literature are well known.

Today, the Goan Catholic diaspora is scattered across the globe, with emigrant communities in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf and the Anglosphere. The Goan Catholic identity has been broadened in recent times to include emigrants of Goan Catholic descent, since around half of the community resides outside Goa.

  • Please stick to only and only Goan Catholic websites and other Goan Catholic organization websites. No Konkani Catholics or Goan and Mangalorean Konkani Catholics or Karwar, Mangalorean, Goan Catholics allowed. And Blogs violate all Wiki policies.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:A Description in Konkani.jpg)

⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:A Description in Konkani.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? J Milburn (talk) 17:15, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

I couldn't help being amused. In the description you have put :"This image is used to illustrate the origin of Goan Catholic literature in the Goan Catholics#Language and literature section .". Looks like a copy paste job, but it sounds funny!. Anyway my point is , I have a hardbound copy of the book(original, not digitized as in this image). Let me know if you want a photo of the cover. Ill get it for you.--Deepak D'Souza 11:12, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Re:Goan Catholics

I didn't list the article at Peer review. It was done by you yourself. For Good article status, you'll have to nomiante your article at WP:GAN. I cannot review the article since according to the statistics, I am a significant contributor of the article. (2nd after you). But why do you want a GA status right now. The article is no where near a Good article right now. The Prose is very poor; and the references are not upto the mark. Many images are copyrighted. The nomination will speedily fail. A professional copyeditors eye is the need of the hour. I would love to copyedit but I am bit busy editing the History of Mumbai article. So, I wouldn't like to make false promises. You won't get instantaneous peer review reply; you'll have to wait for around a week or more. KensplanetTalkContributions 11:37, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I checked the History of Pattoe (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pattoe&action=history). I think you can clearly find my name there. I have made 1 edit to the article. Perhaps (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pattoe&diff=235777764&oldid=235520104) should explain better. Even a single edit is considered as a contribution. Thanks, KensplanetTalkContributions 12:48, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

COI Warning

Hi Sanfy, It is good to see that you are an eager contributor. But, I have to warn you that some of your actions seriously flout Wikipedia rules.

It seem that you have been using your own website as a reference[1].

In Goan Catholics you have added a source, supposedly from your "book".

<ref name="GP">{{cite news| title= These estimates are based on Sanferd Rodrigues's book: The Goan Catholic Community, in which he mentions "50% of the population lives in Goa, 30% have moved to other of parts of India and 20% have left India for greener pastures abroad.". The [[Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Goa e Damão|Archdiocese of Goa & Daman]] estimates the Catholic population in Goa & Daman to be 627,400, out of the total population of 1,763,598 (2006). So Sanferd estimated the Goan Catholic population in Goa to be 600,000. Using Sanferd's estimates, the total number of Goan Catholics in the world is about 2,000,000 of which about 960,000 live in India. The remaining 240,000 are scattered all over the globe.|date=[[2008-09-11]]|accessdate=2008-09-11|publisher=Sanferd Rodrigues}}</ref>

It would be great if it were a well researched book, but unfortunately there isn't any.Even iif there was a book, it would be a confict of interest.

Wikiepdia is strictly against orignal research. What you are doing constitutes Conflict of Interest. Self-published sources tend to violate the policy of reliable sources. Please understand that these rules are here to help Wikipedia become a good encyclopedia.

Please take my warning seriously and stop doing these things. Deleting this message will not help. Already another editor has taken note of your COI problem above. --Deepak D'Souza 13:35, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Reply

I have no idea of the no. of Goan Catholics living in Goa or Delhi. It's outside my area of expertise. Anyway, I am not very much interested in all such articles. Occasionally, I do contribute. Interested only in Bombay related articles. Please don't expect replies to be quick here. It may take many days. Thanks, KensplanetTalkContributions 12:07, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

WILL YOU PLEASE USE EDIT SUMMARIES AND TAKE THE COI WARNING ABOVE VERY SERIOUSLY OR ELSE YOU'LL BE BANNED FROM WIKIPEDIA KensplanetTalkContributions 12:09, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Please use Preview Button

Sanfy, it would be great if you would take some time off from editing and take some time to read the policies and manuals of Wikipedia. I would be really grateful(and I am sure others would too) if you start using the preview button while editing instead of editing the same thing a 100 times. This way it would be less troublesome for others to comepare your edit history and will also make your job easier and save your time. You have edited a simple message on my talk page 10 times without making any significant changes to your message and every timme you do you I get a new message alert!. SO please use the preview button and satisfy yourself that your edit is correct before saving it. By using the preview button you will not have to click on "edit" and "save" multiple times and thend doing it all over again to remove errors. Please use the sandbox to play around and practice if you want. you can create your own personal sandbox too.

Merge proposal

It has been suggested that Kuswad be merged into Kuswar. Discussion is open at Talk:Kuswar#Merge proposal. Make sure you do not fail to reply. That may call for an auto-merge. KensplanetTalkContributions 14:43, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for you reply. However, Kuswad has to be merged with Kuswar as per Wikipedia policies. You yourself have said we Goans refer Kuswar to as Kuswad. So basically, Kuswar and Kuswad are the same. Hence, no two seperate articles can exist (1 for the Mangalorean Catholics and other for the Goan Catholics). This is violation of Wikipedia's WP:NPOV policies, since it's just an encyclopedic article with no affinity to either community or individual. Now regarding the name of the article. Should it be Kuswad or Kuswar. Regarding Kuswad, there is not even a single reliable source, whereas for Kuswar, we have 2 reliable sources (http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/mp/2006/11/25/stories/2006112500760100.htm) and (http://www.hindu.com/mp/2007/12/22/stories/2007122250990100.htm) both from The Hindu newspaper. Newspapers are considered reliable as per Wiki policies. So the title has to be Kuswar, with Kuswad being a redirect. Thanks, KensplanetTalkContributions 15:17, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Peer review

Your peer review has been answered at Wikipedia:Peer review/Goan Catholics/archive2. I have removed the obsolete Wikipedia:Peer review/Goan Catholics/archive1. Thanks, KensplanetTalkContributions 15:25, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Statistics

I would love to add if I had the statistics. I don't have them. I had to search for hours for a single statistic. I just don't have the time. You may find a lot of problems in finding statistics for Goan Catholics in Goa during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. That's because Goa was ruled by the Portuguese. The Portuguese published all the census, statistics of Goan Catholics in the Portuguese language. You'll hardly find such Portuguese language books and moreover you'll also need to know Portuguese to understand it. But Mangalore was ruled by the British. All their census, statistics of Mangalorean Catholics are readily availaible since they published those in the English language. Good Luck, KensplanetTalkContributions 17:44, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
