+The Wikipedia article entitled "Third Millenium" contains the following statement: "The astronomical year numbering system does include a Year 0, and for a very good reason, because it is a system of time measurement, not a system of year counting".The article also recommends that suggested changes be made at Talk:Year Zero. It also referenced an article by Peter Meyer which I have been unable to access. Does the author of the third millenium article not consider a year as being a measure of the passage of time?? Of course it is, just as a millenium, a century and a decade are. . As such they follow the cardinal numbering system( 0, 1, 2 etc.). They use the ordinal numbering system (1st, 2nd etc.) for placing them in the correct order. I believe the following "device" will help clarify the significant issue involving the use of a common numeral to represent both numeral systems. Let M represent a millenium, C a century, D a decade and Y a year.
M C D Y --------- -------- -------- ------- 3rd 1st 1st 1st Ordinal Placing in the correct order | This table
Year 2 0 0 0 Cardinal None of these time periods has been completed | is crucial in
Thus it is obvious that the start of the first year of the third millenium was on January 1, 2000, not January 1, 2001. | support of my arguments
On February 20, 2007, I submitted a longer note giving other arguments for my position but the table (like the one above which I hope transmits OK) was garbled and not put in tabular form. It transmitted OK otherwise and appeared briefly in Talk:Year Zero and then disappeared for some unknown reason. I copied it before it disappeared and now do not find it in my deleted file. It is important in disproving the notion (supported by Wikipedia) that because of the late invention of the symbol for zero (0) there was a missing year zero. There was no missing year zero. And, of course, there is no such thing as zeroth anythin
The third millenium definition needs to be revised. 1 January 2001 was actually the beginning of the second year of the third millenium.
