Arthur Vogelsang (b. January 31, 1942) is an American poet and editor.
Biography
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he attended public schools there and worked five years at the Greyhound Bus Terminal while he earned a BA in English at the University of Maryland and an MA from the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars. He met his wife Judith Ayers at Hopkins.1,2,3 After graduation they moved to New York where Vogelsang worked as an Editing Supervisor for the McGraw- Hill Book Company in College Textbooks and the International Division. Subsequently, he earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers Workshop.1
Vogelsang’s books of poetry are A Planet (1983), Twentieth Century Women (1988), selected by John Ashbery for the Contemporary Poetry Series, Cities and Towns (1996), which won the Juniper Prize, Left Wing of a Bird (2003), and Expedition: New & Selected Poems (2011).1,4,5 His poetry appears regularly in anthologies such as The Best American Poetry,18 The Pushcart Prize17, and the Norton Anthology American Hybrid 5,6 ; in periodicals such as The Boston Review,7 The New Yorker,8 and Poetry1 ; and online at Verse Daily4, Evergreen Review9, and Zocalo Public Square.10
He was a full-time editor/publisher of The American Poetry Review from 1973-2006. 1,2,11,12,19 With Stephen Berg and David Bonanno, Vogelsang edited the anthology The Body Electric, America’s Best Poetry from The American Poetry Review, (W.W. Norton & Co., 2000), with an introduction by Harold Bloom.12
Vogelsang was sole proprietor, publisher, and editor of Metro Book Co. (1983-2002). The company published a poetry book in 1984, Gerald Stern’s Rejoicings, and one in 1986, Michael Burkard’s The Fires They Kept.13
A literary magazine, The Ark River Review, was edited, usually from Wichita, KS, by Jonathan Katz, A.G. Sobin, and Arthur Vogelsang, appearing between 1971 and 1980. Published mostly as a quarterly, the magazine’s authors included Kenneth Rexroth, Donald Justice, Mark Doty, Ted Kooser, Stephen Dunn, Gerard Malanga, and William Stafford, among numerous others. A special 3-Poet Issue in 1973 contained poetry exclusively from Albert Goldbarth, Michael Ryan, and James Tate, 15 printed pages each, accompanied by a photograph and an extensive contributor’s note on each poet.14
Vogelsang has been employed occasionally as a teacher (University of Nevada MFA/PhD Program, University of Southern California, University of Redlands, Kansas Arts Commission Workshops, University of Iowa Writers’ Workshops).1,2,15,19
Currently he lives in Los Angeles with his wife Judith.
