Resuscitative thoracotomy
[edit]What is your concern with the statement that "15% of people sustaining thoracic injury require a resuscitative thoracotomy"? I double checked this figure with "Trauma" by Moore, p. 462 and it confirms the statement. Sorry if this is a bit blunt, I just got back from some long training... On a lighter note: would you be interested in editing Wikipedia in general and helping to expand the medical content? Peter.C • talk • contribs 03:22, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi,
- Hopefully this gets back to you - the workings and code of Wikipedia are a complete mystery to me at the moment. I haven't got the reference to look at but there must be a misunderstanding. Thoracic injury in my view is a very broad term, includes broken ribs, chest bruising, penetrating injury, minor lacerations etc, basically any injury to the structure that is the thorax, however big or small. The notion that 15% of patients with any injury to their thorax would get a thoracotomy is crazy. It is an uncommon procedure done in a very select group of patients - patients who are close to or effectively dead - and if there is any kind of statement made about it's incidence then I think it should be something like that. The table from Moore's must be either incorrect or misinterpreted I believe.
- I'll get into wikipedia editing perhaps when I have more time. Studying for specialty exams this year.
- Regards.
