Doctor of Divinity

[edit]

Here is where I got mine. No work is involved, but seeing as how the degree doesn't carry any weight, I suppose it is fitting. ReverendG 20:50, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually no, it's an honorary degree usually given in recognition of service to the church. Very few denominations require academic schooling for it. ReverendG 21:45, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sanat-Kumara

[edit]

I can't read much of it either - other than "Sanat-Kumara said: ...something about the prowess of Lakshmi, Brahma and Shiva" and the second verse says "Garga? said: Sanat Kumara ... something about the perfection of, or the perfect yogi - and bhakti yoga"? I found this story which combines all of the characters mentioned, which might be of interest even if not directly related to these verses. :-) Gouranga(UK) 09:10, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Liberation of Women in Jainism

[edit]

Dear Sir, There are two views on this - a) Swetambara Jain View - Women can attain liberation. Marudevi mother of Lord Rishabhadeva was the first person in this time cycle to attain liberation. Lord Mallinatha 21st Tirthankara was a woman.

b) Digambara Jain view – Women cannot attain liberation. For Digambara nudity is essential in monkhood which women cannot practice. Hence women can attain liberation when they reincarnate as men. Digamabras reject that marudevi attained liberation and that lord mallinath was a woman.

Thanks--Anishshah19 06:45, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Swetabembera are in majority. However Digamberas are quite sizeable in Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, MP, UP. Swetambers are concentrated in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Punjab.--Anish Shah 15:26, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Both Sects in jainism has produced tons of doctrinal material to prove their point of view on liberation of women. Please see ebbok - Jaini, Padmanabh S. Gender and Salvation: Jaina Debates on the Spiritual Liberation of Women. Berkeley: University of California Press, c1991. at this site for detailed discussions - http://ark.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/ft138nb0wk/
Furthermore for more doubts on jainism, you can Join the yahoogroups - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jainismforworld/ and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jainlist/.--Anish Shah 06:49, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
