Special award
Hi, SMasters. Some of your friends at the Guild of Copy Editors got together and created this special award for you in honour of your service to the Guild.
Thank you very much for your service. Here is a super user box you can add to your page if you like:
Congratulations! --Ninja Diannaa (Talk) 03:29, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- Wow! I am indeed honored and humbled by this. Thank you all so much! – SMasters (talk) 03:50, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- Congrats and well deserved :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 04:56, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- Truly a well deserved honour, as well as your position as Coordinator Emeritus. Without you, I think a certain article would not be in as great a shape as it is now. Congrats.--Tærkast (Discuss) 10:45, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive
Hi
I just wondered if there were any steps we can take, in particular towards GOCE members, to try and increase the number of people signing up for the drive? I realise it may be a seasonal issue as summer, holidays and exams etc. are here but, as there were 103 last year, the present 15 does seem a little lean.
You're welcome on the crown assitance, you deserve it! I have a long way to go before I can even think of awards like that, though I am going to try and break my GA virginity (lol) by the end of July. I started the Belitung shipwreck article and, as it was such an interesting subject (sewn together ship), I put it up for a DYK and now want to at least get it to GA. Chaosdruid (talk) 05:12, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the numbers are the worst ever. Last year was a bit different as Jimbo attracted a lot of interest by participating. I have put up an offer on WP:REWARD. I guess it's not too late to send out another reminder to members as well as past participants. If you could do it I can help send it out. – SMasters (talk) 06:08, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
- I have prepared a quick draft here
- Bloody Jimbo lol, I reminded him once a week then had to post just about everyday in the last week to get him to finally edit one article :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 03:03, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your hard work. I will send it out very soon. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 07:25, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
- Done. 505 invitations were sent out. List gathered from the Guild's mailing list as well as all past drive participants. Those from the opt-out list as well as those who had already signed up were removed from the list. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 09:39, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your hard work. I will send it out very soon. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 07:25, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
TGilmour and the GOCE requests page
Hi
I was just going to delete User:TGilmour's requests as they have been blocked (socking), but thought it best to seek a second opinion.
I wondered if we should leave them as is, see if the articles are in need of a copyedit (in which case I would put the "copyedit needed" banner and remove from the req. page), just remove them if they are B-class or above, or some other action I had not considered.
Jimmy Page is B-class, though it does contain some fairly fragmented sections with some very short single sentence paragraphs. Martin Luther is already a GA and appears in good shape. Chaosdruid (talk) 05:04, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- OK, sounds like a good move. Do what you think is appropriate. Thanks, and well spotted. – SMasters (talk) 09:36, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

Nominations for WikiProject Australia Triple Crown
Hi SMasters. I have just nominated four editors, including myself, for the WikiProject Australia Triple Crown here. Per the WikiProject triple crown nomination instructions, I set the nominations out in a table format with supporting evidence and am just leaving a note here to let you know. :) Cheers, Abraham, B.S. Vacation
Just to let you know, I will be on vacation from July 17-19. I am going down to Southern Utah to visit Silver Reef and a couple other historic sites. I will also be unavailable most of the day on the 20th, as I will be in Eureka visiting the Tintic Mining Museum. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 18:30, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hey, you probably remember that I worked on the Silver Reef article last year. Have a great trip and enjoy your vacation! – SMasters (talk) 19:20, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- I remember that. Thanks to you and several other users, the article is now up to Good article status, and I plan on working on it soon to make it a Featured article. If I ever need another thorough copy edit of the article, you'll be the first one I'll ask. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 19:41, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

- Can you please put a request at the GOCE on WP:GOCE/REQ? I'm currently swamped with work and am not sure if I have the time at this moment. There is currently a drive going on at the GOCE and I think you will get a quick response there. Thanks. – SMasters (talk) 07:43, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Mid drive newsletter available for editing
Hi, SMasters. I have made a first draft of a mid-drive newsletter and it is available here for further work. If you have time to check it over that would be great. Thanks. --Diannaa (talk) 17:25, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hi again. I was wondering if you could send out the newsletter using AWB in the next day or two? That would be such a big help. Thanks. --Diannaa (talk) 02:09, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- I had a look at it yesterday and it looked ok, except for the image, which was not showing properly. But I just checked and it seems to be working fine now. OK, I will send it out in a day or so. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 04:06, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- Ya, it was just the Commons having trouble with their thumbnails again. Thank you very much for sending it out. --Diannaa (talk) 19:37, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Editing mentor
Hi, I just signed up with Wikipedia and am interested in helping out with copy editing. I finished a certificate in CE last fall and want to hone my skills. Since I am a beginner, I would appreciate having a mentor here while I get started. As suggested on the Guild page, I am contacting you as a coordinator before selecting one. What is the next step? Thanks in advance, Kim KimVanA (talk) 19:01, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for considering me. Unfortunately, I am currently busy with work and am unable to take on this role. I will see if any other available mentors can help you. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 04:23, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
GOCE drive newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors July 2011 backlog elimination drive update
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your mid-drive newsletter.
So far, 45 people have signed up for the drive, of which 30 are actively participating, a very high participation rate. If you have not signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. If you have questions about getting started, feel free to talk to us.
Progress has been less than that needed to meet our target for the drive (which would reduce the backlog by about 400 articles). Remember though, if everyone copy edits one or two articles every day, we will easily meet our goal. Many thanks to those editors who have been helping out at the Requests page. Reducing the number of articles on this list has been a major success of this drive. Thanks for participating! Your drive coordinators – Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02 and SMasters |

Ambassador Program: assessment drive
Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.
In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.
Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.
