Santa Clara University presidents

Hi, and thanks for contributing these pages. As they stand, each consists of one or two sentences, and are too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of the subjects or to demonstrate notability. Doesn't being President count as "6. The person has held a major highest-level elected or appointed academic post at a major academic institution or major academic society."? I suppose it depends what "Major" means here. Text of WP:ACADEMIC refers to "Accredited", and Santa_Clara_University#Accreditations lists some accreditations. It's open to interpretation to a degree, I suppose, but yes I'd agree that these individuals fulfil that specific criterion. They still need to be expanded past the one sentence stubs and WP:ACADEMIC provides some hints as to what is typically thought of as important information to include in articles about academics. And as your sources obviously provide you with their birth and death dates, please include these in the lead sentence in standard Wikipedia style ("Joe Bloggs (18nn-19nn) was a ...."). Thanks. PamD (talk) 18:17, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I stub-sort more of them, another thing occurs: you need to give a geographical context, to say what country (and city and state) "Santa Clara University" is in. Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia, not a US encyclopedia. PamD (talk) 18:36, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've tweaked the opening line of Richard A. Gleeson as an example, but please tell us what dates he was President, as that's obviously one of the known facts about him and must be in your source. (As well as putting his birth and death dates into the opening). Please upgrade all these stub articles - I'm not going to go through all 22 or whatever of them for you. Thanks.   • As Zacheus J. Maher has already had some attention I've cleaned that article up further:
  • Added dates of presidency
  • Removed clearly erroneous birth & death dates from persondata and categories
  • Geog context to opening sentence
  • a minor grammar fix (missing "and")
  • Requested his birth date - is it one of your sources?
  • Changed the category from Category:Italian Jesuits to Category:American Jesuits on the basis that with a name like that and born in USA he appears to be American rather than Italian. If you're not sure, perhaps they should all go as Jesuits without nationality - better to have no info than wrong info.

But note the "so far"! I've tweaked it a bit further, by changing your present tenses to past tense, telling the reader where in the world SCU can be found (WP is NOT an American encyclopedia, please remember it is international), and adding a {{linkrot}} tag: please use full references so that your sources can be identified even if their web address changes. Referencing articles - some advice

Hi SEMUP, and again welcome to Wikipedia!
Wikipedia is somewhat labyrinthine in its rules, policies and guidelines. Catfish Jim has already mentioned one: WP:ACADEMIC. It is itself a corollary of WP:NOTABILITY. And I'm going to mention another: WP:CITE.

As your fellow WP:WIKIPEDIANs, we really are here to help rather hinder you, though it may sometimes not seem that way. To that end, I have used Wikipedia's preferred citation methods in "edits" to Zacheus J. Maher. All of the references are now "inline citations".

The inline citation function really is only a tiny bit more complicated than using the "add footnote" feature of Microsoft Word. When you click to "edit" a Wikipedia article, you'll get a toolbar with a big B, a slanted I, a globe picture, patial links in a chain, a picture of a picture of sorts, a pencil that appears to be writing "f", and then {{ }} Click on the {{ }}, and I am sure that you will have no problems using the referencing utility it presents.

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, please do not add promotional material to articles or other Wikipedia pages, as you did to Santa Clara University. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. You seem to be what we call a single-purpose account, as all you apparently are interested in editing is on this particular school. If you have a conflict of interest, you may want to re-think your approach, as many of the new articles you have created for all these alumni fail our notability guidelines for people and will likely be deleted, perhaps en masse. Do you normally ignore people who attempt to have a conversation with you? It's no different online, we're not robots, there's real people above trying to talk to you. Give them the courtesy of a reply. Also, could you please try to use edit summaries with your edits? It's more important than you may realize, it helps people understand the intention behind your edit and saves time when viewing the article version history. Sorry, I'm still new to Wikipedia and I wasn't exactly sure how to respond hopefully this works.
