Consensus All-Americans

I noticed you did the Lion's share of the work on the NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans pages so I thought I'd bounce this off you. Usually when discussing players in the past, the emphasis is on consensus All-American status, do you think it might be good to use these pages to show the consensus teams, then show the teams that made up the consensus picks? For example, these days the AP, USBWA, NABC and TSN teams are used to determine the consusus squads. The way it is, it makes it seem like the AP list is the de facto standard, which isn't usually how we look at it historically. I can update the pages but seeing as how you set the format, I really didn't want to do so without checking in with you to make sure you were OK w/it. The reason I went with Helms/AP is that they were the easiest to find the information on and seem to be the most respected/referenced as far as writers and school record books are concerned. AFAIK, there is no such thing as Consensus Second-Team. I mostly work on football however. Where did the lingo come from? From what I understand there are three types of All-Americans (plus second and third-team):

1. Player on at least one First-Team of lists recognized for consensus.
2. Player on at least half of the First-Teams of recognized lists is considered Consensus All-American.
3. Player on all of the First-Teams of recognized lists is considered Unanimous All-American.

Players who make no first-teams are generally described by their highest team of the recognized lists. E.g., In 2003, Kirk Hinrich was a Third-team All-American, Kyle Korver was a Second-team All-American, Carmelo Anthony was an All-American, Hollis Price was a consensus All-American and David West (basketball) was a unanimous All-American.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 02:58, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Basketball does have consensus 2nd teams, maybe the difference is because the teams are smaller. Here is the link to the NCAA record book showing the consensus 1st and 2nd teams: NCAA Basketball Record Book: Award Winners Section as well as to the 2005 publication "NCAA Finest" which shows the team breakdowns to 2005 (AAs start on page 174) NCAA Men's basketball's finest. Template:CBB Yearly Record End

Hi there. I noticed you added a fourth color to the coaching record key. Do you think we should also add a color for winning the national and regular season championship, the national and tournament championship, and all three championships - national, regular season, and tournament? That's three more colors there. I don't know if we'll clutter up the table by adding those. I temporarily added symbols for Pat Summitt's record - let me know what you think of that. While it's certainly possible, i think it might clutter things up like you said. Especially when finding that many shades of colors that don't look too similar in a browser. I just added the "regular season + tournament" category because I didn't like that you had to choose one over the other, giving one more importance. National championships on the other hand, are certainly more important than conference results, so i'm ok with overriding conference results in that case. I think we should probably just stick to symbols on pages where it is desired, like the example you have shown. I certainly don't have a problem with someone else adding the categories though, if they can make it work nicely. Ryan2845 (talk) 19:43, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

July 2008

I see you've added colors on the season-by-season results table on the Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball page and I think it's a great change. I agree with that, i tried to find some shades of blue that would retain more readability but then they were harder to distinguish between the colors. I will probably try to tweak it some more later. Feel free to tweak it also if you like

The Get Up Kids

Hey, I appreciate your comments. While the Pope brothers live in Olathe now, I'm fairly certain that they are actually from KC MO, particularly due to their close relation to "Valentine Road" in many of their lyrics. Most of the band actually grew up on or near this road (save for James, who grew up in Liberty). They even stated this at their final show at the Uptown, which is actually ON Valentine Road. Just wanted to clear this up. But again, thanks for taking your time to improve these articles. I've really been working on them alone for a while, and it's good to have someone new contribute. Hmm, I dunno about that. I'm POSITIVE that Pryor grew up on Valentine, and I'm very close to sure that Jim and the Popes did too. However, I know as a FACT that James is from Liberty. He's mentioned it numerous times at live shows, and Liberty is even mentioned a few times on Last Stop: Crappy Town, as well as in the Lawrence.com interview used as a reference on that page. Okay, I guess that makes sense. However, here's my suggestion: Change the infobox, and include it in their bio, but you don't have to elaborate on the city. If you link to the Olathe, Kansas page, that will be enough. Also, I don't think that the article for the band should be changed. While three of the members were from Olathe, the band itself moved into a house on Valentine before they even put out their first release. (I listened to the bootleg of their final show, and it confirmed this.) Besides, since they were living in KC MO before they did anything notable, that would make the band itself from KC MO. Kansas Basketball

In response to your message about the table I created to list Kansas' record vs. its conference opponents, I am of the opinion that including the winning percentage just makes the table more cluttered than it needs to be and doesn't add to the information the table provides. Yes, obviously, having the winning percentage on there would make life a little bit easier on whoever comes along and wants to know the winning percentages of the respective series. I don't think it would kill anyone to calculate it themselves. As for the percentage for the Coaches, I don't have a problem with that because we regularly refer to a coaches' record in that manner. The Big 12 media guides to not list winning percentages for the respective conference series and I feel for this reason, as well as the reasons above, we can do without listing the winning percentage in that table.

As for the "KU" on each of the individual boxes... that is to indicate that Kansas leads each of those series.

Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball seasons

Hey, I was trying to correct the totals and at least one entry error on this page and it looks like you posted an update simultaneously with me. In my corrected totals for Phog Allen, I went with how the page was when I initially found it, in that the total for his 2nd tenure as head coach gave cumulative totals for his entire coaching career. I didn't include the 1 game coached by Karl Schlademan in 1919-1920 because my 100 years of KU basketball book doesn't either. I also have it that Howard Engleman was 5-5 in conference in 1946-1947 and not 5-4, but this could be in error since it's from another source.

I may not be correct but I beleive Engleman was 5-4, my logic here is that the official media guide states that Phog left the team after a loss to Missouri on January 7th, so that would be 0-1 for phog in conference play and 5-4 for engleman.

As far as the 1 game for schlademan, I have seen it noted both ways and i'm fine with either so feel free to change it if you like, but please change it on Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball#Coaches also if you do. Ryan2845 (talk) 21:18, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I looked it up and agree with your 5-4, but none of the official totals I can find count that loss towards Phog Allen's total losses. So I guess I leave that one alone. I went back and added the 1 win under Schlademan to Allen's total which is in agreement with the Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball#Coaches page.

Sunflower Showdown

Why did you switch the KU 08 and 09 seasons back to the Sunflower Showdown? It's the Governor's Cup in football, and the Sunflower Showdown in everything else.Topgun530 (talk) 19:01, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Well because I don't think that is true. I believe it is called the sunflower showdown in football as well, the trophy is the governor's cup, not the name of the game. It may be "the game for the governor's cup" but it is still the sunflower showdown series. Same as the KU/MU series is called the "Border War" not the "Indian War Drum Game" which is the name of the trophy.

A quick google shows both athletic departments also reference the game as the "Sunflower Showndown" kstatesports.comkuathletics.com

Season pages and schedules

Hey - I'm doing the Syracuse basketball page for the current season. I looked at the Kansas page (very nice job, by the way) and I noticed that there was a template already set up for season schedules. Is there any way to make the process faster besides manually putting in each game? Is there some kind of bot program that can make it faster? It seems laborious to go through the whole season again. KU Official loss record

I suppose it is better to go with the the univeristy officially has. The different is probably the K-State game from 1980, when KU had to forfeit because of an ineligible player. KU officially counts that as a win, as does K-State. That might account for one of the losses. The college football warehouse probably counts that as a loss, when KU counts it as a win.Topgun530 (talk) 15:13, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Could be, probably that and the 1960 missouri game which was forfeited too. KU by policy just counts forfeits as a non-game rather than a loss or a win, which i believe is NCAA policy as well. KU probably does the same with the 1980 KSU game, just a non-game rather than a loss in the record books. Although, KU also forfeited a game against colorado in 1960 so you'd think the difference in loss totals would be 3 games instead of 2... Ryan2845 (talk) 15:39, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

College Athlete Recruit Templates

Is it possible to make any adjustments to {{College Athlete Recruit Start}} and/or {{College Athlete Recruit Entry}} so that {{College Athlete Recruit End}} is not necessary to close the template. I add the player ratings to their bio pages (E.g., Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims). Would you mind helping w/ some formatting?

Hi - I have been working on beefing up the existing college basketball seasons and was wondering if you might be able to help me with a formatting problem. I have added statistical leaders to the exiting pages (see here for an example), but the formatting doesn't look as good on the 1999-00 page. It seems like the Infobox at the top is reducing the viewing area (note the line below "Regular season" doesn't extend all the way across the page). Can you help? Is it a real problem or just my browser? I have the conference winner table almost ready to drop in, but would prefer to be sure the formatting is straight before I add it. what do you think of conference tournament dates on the NCAA bball page?

Hey - I saw somebody added conference tournament dates on the conference winners and tournaments table of the 2008–09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season page. I think this info is a little unnnecsssary since you are can click on the rlevant tournament and get more info, but wanted to ask somebody else who's invested in these pages too. I just don't see this info as being that relevant if you look back at it, say, in 5 years - it isn't the limited critical info you'd want to see at a glance. My other two issues are a) I think it will crunch the table a little when the tournament winners are added and b) I don't feel like going back and adding this info to past seasons and I think they should be consistent year to year (nobody ever wants to add their great ideas to 5-6 different pages!). Yeah, I think I would agree with you that it shouldn't be on there when the tournaments are over. It's probably ok to leave it for now and then remove them after the season. Definitely not worth going back and adding them to the old season since it doesn't really add any valuable information to the table once the tourneys are over. I'm not real sure how to go about getting it back, but I think you can contact an admin to request a copy of the text. Then you'll have to add more sources before you create the article again. Hi - Just wanted to check in and see if you were planning (or are open to) creating and maintaining a 2009–10 Big 12 Conference men's basketball season page as you did last year. I'd love to see if we can get these going for all D1 conferences and am trying to see what coverage we have. After we see who is willing to do what, I can pick up 2-3 conference pages (maybe A10, CUSA, etc). Mangino: Whatever.

It's not worth arguing with a Kansas booster over whether a 500-pound coach is ridiculed for being 500 pounds. Never mind the documentation that Mangino is, in fact, ridiculed over his weight and it has led to questions about his personality and effectiveness.

If written in a wikipedia worthy manner, go for it. But links to message boards of peoples opinions are never going to make it on wikipedia, KU fan or not. Ah, now we're getting somewhere. You are "enforcing" a rule in a case where it does not favor a living person that you admire. The issues of "evidence" and "subject authentication" don't matter, you just don't want to permit mention that occasionally Texas and Nebraska fans refer to Mark Mangino as "obese." The point being proven is that "people on the internet call Mark Mangino fat and make fun of his weight." The footnote is directly to a messageboard on which people have in fact called Mark Mangino fat. So... what should I do? Post a link to a newspaper article referencing the message boards secondhand, or the messageboards themselves? I have no admiration for Mangino. In fact, I hope he's fired soon. I personally make fun of him for being fat all the time. But it's not MY fault you can't find a reliable source which is REQUIRED by wikipedia. I even went so far as to add the section back after it was removed entirely and try to compromise. Take your frustration with wikipedia out on those who write the wiki rules, not me. If you don't want to follow or can't understand wikipedia rules, then you shouldn't be an editor, but it's not MY fault. If it wasn't me removing it, someone else will, I GUARANTEE you. Never seen that before either. Guess wikipedia just doesn't allow that many templates to be included on one page. Maybe there should just be a separate article with all the conference standings templates on it? Then just include the major conferences on the main page with a link to the new article. Last March you copied the Football template to this template but left "football" throughout. Since then the template has only be edited once to reinforce "football" and to introduce a DEFAULTSORT conflict. I will resolve the conflict as that is the way I found the template. You may want to think about re-visiting the template to eliminate the irrelevancies and change "football" to "basketball" so that the template can be documented properly.

All Time NCAA wins site is ruined

I'm not sure who started letting people add wins through a certain date but it would take hours to now correct this page because of it. The part timers aren't coming bad and finishing the total (or updating winning percentage). Agree completely, if I had the powers to protect it I would. It was especially bad this year with the race to 2000 wins going on, so it was getting changed daily and I got tired of reverting it every day, so quit trying. I think it's OK, technically the division lines still exist in basketball, they just aren't used for the overall standings. For example, North teams only play each South team once a year, but play each North team twice a year. Ryan2845 (talk) 13:12, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
