November 2021
[edit]Hello, I'm Robertjamal12. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Memorial (society), but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Robertjamal12 (talk) 22:22, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
Dear Robert, can you be more specific? I attended one of the first Memorial conferences in 1988 and know people who work for the organisation, now threatened with closure. Rustat99 (talk) 12:37, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
Dear Robert, looking at the page today I can see extensive reversion of fully referenced editing, additions and rewriting that took me several hours yesterday. Your work? Rustat99 (talk) 12:42, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
Unintentional revert
[edit]Hi, sorry for reverting your edits. It was unintentional, I apologize for any inconvenience caused. Thank you -- Robertjamal12 (talk) 14:44, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
Phew!
[edit]Luckily I don't have a weak heart ...

Disambiguation link notification for November 23
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Mass graves from Soviet mass executions, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Levashovo. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:00, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks!
[edit]I'll sort that out today. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, Mr Bot!

Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hi again John. I see that you indicated above that you personally know employees of Memorial, and that they are close friends. The following text is a standard template:
If you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Memorial (society), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Jr8825 • Talk 02:13, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Apologies for my tone; civility; no personal attacks
[edit]I apologise for the tone I adopted on the article talk page of Memorial. I presumed you were a relatively inexperienced editor based on your edit count and style. However, I now know this is not the case after seeing your previous account, and I imagine you may have found my tone condescending. I'm sorry if this was the case.
I see this isn't the first COI template you've received, and I do encourage you to read the policy carefully. I also ask that you stop referring to the contributions of other editors as "vandalism" and casting aspersions on others' motivations/anonymity, as you've done on multiple occasions recently. Vandalism is intentional, so these are effectively accusations of bad faith. Please remember that civility is required, and a core Wikipedia policy, and it applies to both talk pages and edit summaries.
Please can you strike through your comment about "ignorant interference", directed towards myself and other recent editors of the page. I consider this a personal attack. I hope we can de-escalate things and cooperate on improving the article. Jr8825 • Talk 03:15, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
I have three responses to your numerous remarks, JR.
One, actions speak louder than words. An apology that is not backed up by a change in behaviour is not, in my books, an apology.
Two, I am wary of engaging with people whose identity and background I do not know. This has never been a problem on Wikipedia until now but, for instance, it is quite clear that English is not the first language or mother tongue for some of the volunteer editors whose work you have been defending. The response to their unhelpful behaviour is obvious: Wikipedia exists in multiple language versions and they should, rather, be editing and adapting texts about Memorial (or President Biden) that have been written by their compatriots whether they are from China, Taiwan or indeed Russia itself.
An elderly academic of my acquaintance commented: "I don't trust or read people who don't use their real names." I've stated explicitly who I am. What's the problem with revealing who you are? As a super-competent IT specialist I worked with in this country said: "It's rather cool to use your own name," when editing for Wikipedia or similar sites. I agree.
Lastly, I do not know where you think I have written that I know people in Memorial. I do not recall stating that anywhere in our exchanges. Reference, please, or a prompt apology (of the kind on which you're so keen) for such public misrepresentation. Then, and only then, shall I deal with your latest requests.
