User Page Award

Hi Rune.welsh,

I've noticed that Banes is taking a Wikibreak, and the user page award needs to start up, as the elections are over. I was wondering if you wanted to give the thumbs-up to start the next round and to oversee it, like always?

--Primate#101 02:10, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I notice you often comment on Featured List requests - I think that List of temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meets the criteria; however, since I am new to that process I am asking for any advice/suggestions to identify any deficiencies prior to nomination. thx in adv. Trödel 02:29, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thx for the suggestions - will get some temple pics and an intro in there next Trödel 13:41, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

about an image that was removed

(Image:2006 presidential polls.PNG) I am not implying the image means anything just as nobody is implying (most of the time) that the list of polls on that page mean anything either. People learn in different ways and some are more visual, the graph attempted to help those that become dizzy with numbers and would feel more comfortable looking at a graph. The image description specified the data came from different sources already. --FateClub 18:44, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am not attempting to analyze data, but to present it in a graphical manner. To analyze data statistical analysis is the most appropriate show, if I attempted to do so by showing a graph, I would be simply be laughed at. A graphic just presents information, it does not offer an analysis of it. Thanks for your suggestion, I took a lot of time to create the graph and creating one (or several) for different sources would take even more time, which I don't have. I guess I will wait for somebody with more time to create one that will be more appropriate for this purpose. --FateClub 19:07, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
Signed...

FLC objections

Welcome back! :) Renata 04:47, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I forgot one thing: "reference style" does not mean simply adding access dates to external links. Renata 05:00, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would you reconsider your vote to delete the Mexican crime article?

Someone else created the Mexican crime article and, admittedly, the original text was short and appeared to be a slam against Mexico because it seemed to say "Stay away from Mexico, it's crime-ridden."

However, when my attention was drawn to the article, I saw the potential for a valuable article and so I expanded the text based on Google research and tried to take out the OR and POV text. User:Aguerriero believes this is an important article and has pledged to work on it to further remove OR and POV text.

Would you reconsider your "delete" vote in the context of the above points? Article deletion page is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mexican crime.

Thanx.

--Richard 16:26, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rune.welsh, it looks like you promoted List of first-class cricket quadruple centuries to featured list status, in accordance with its WP:FLC, but you didn't add {{Featured list}} to the page itself. It looks like other editors put it in just above the categories section, at the bottom of the article text. TheGrappler 08:53, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Cañada Redux

Hi Rune. Long time coming, but I finally uploaded my picture of BattleofCanada.jpg . Could you insert it into the article and guide me as to how to do it in the future? Thanks! Murcielago 20:47, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Rune. I will go through the tutorial, and hopefully have much to add after that. I have gone ahead and made my first attempt at inserting a pic at Jean Baptiste Salpointe, and I think it came out OK. Pretty easy insertion, though. Anyway, thanks, as usual for helping me out. List of Anuran families

What do you suggest for the List of Anuran families candidacy? It seemed that people just didn't come back to the discussion. Should I re-nominate it? If I do, I can advertise it on WP:AAR, I am sure some of them will be willing to vote. --liquidGhoul 12:00, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did this fail? All problems adressed have been fixed. --Cat out 21:33, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The main issue was maru's objections on phrasing and language. The list is very good, so you're welcome to resubmit it as soon as you please after outstanding issues are fixed. Regards -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 11:27, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We have adressed all of the outstanding issues. I believe, Maru never checked back in... I'll do as you ask tho. --Cat out 15:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am considering withdrawing my nomination since people are comlaining the silly about everything in no way in accordance with criteria.

Some of the oppose votes are for images being fair use, while another complains that dvd images are inaproporate and instead screenshots should be used (something whelmingly opposed on other noms). Some oppose because tables "look ugly".

What do you think. Does it have any chance of surviving the flc since I can't satisfy conflicting views... --Cat out 13:01, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As long as images have Fair Use rationales (and they do) the objection is not valid and thus I wouldn't consider it. Uglyness is a factor sometimes, but what people are expecting to see is a class="wikitable" sort of thing (so that's easily addressed). I haven't really gone through the nomination this time (fairly busy week at work) but I'd recommend you not to withdraw it. Good luck. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 13:32, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I'll wait then. :)
class="wikitable" doesnt work properly on firefox on larger tables (and the one we have is decently large). The current table header is the modified version of wikitable compensating for the problem (and blue bg instead of grey).
--Cat out 13:36, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cool Cat might find it silly, but you have now promoted the list to featured status (and marked your actions as minor) dispite three strong objections to it?? What gives? -- Ned Scott 10:24, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In reply to your message back to me: Yeah, after I left that message I thought to myself, I shouldn't spend my efforts complaining, rather, I should put my money where my mouth is and try to work with the other editors to improve the articles. Cool Cat really did spend a lot of time on the list and it is better than most. Sorry for my little outburst. -- Ned Scott 20:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rune, I have added a reply to your comment on the FLC. Could you please check and respond? Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 04:43, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I dont know how to put this, but I need your help. User:Ned Scott is giving me a serious hard time at List of Air episodes. He is forcing episode screenshots over dvd covers. He is maintaining the same attitude he had on list of planetes episodes and List of Fullmetal Alchemist episodes. This is really frustrating for me. --Cat out 04:51, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Estadio Azteca

I understand, but one user has taken it upon themselves to make a mass-change of "stadiums" to "stadia". There is no consensus for this and its a mass, unilateral POV push. There are over 200 chnages that need to be reverted. I consider this a form of vandalism and believe that rolling it back is not only an appropriate use of the tools but also the only practical way to undertake this effort. Thanks for your recent encouraging words. I was getting a bit despondent. I've put a lot of effort into making it comprehensive and I think the list is now much more useful. I realised that by being restrictive, I was actually suppressing important information, some of which was hidden on the talk page. The misdiagnoses and retrospective diagnoses are a "major component of the subject". I've started doing a quality audit on the living-people sources, which I'll probably put on the talk page.

BTW: I've just noticed that Renata's criticism of "only one scientist" echo's yours on the brain tumour list. Perhaps you need to have a

Hi. I've performed an audit of the still-living people - and posted the results on the talk page. I've also made a number of other changes (moving to table format, changing the order, adding a picture). I'd really appreciate if you could spare some time to review and add your opinion. Thanks very much. If I can return the favour, let me know. Colin°Talk 21:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Pointless revert

When you reverted my fixing of the sort key on Metro Pino Suárez, your edit summary said "pointless revert since there's no other station which name starts with "Pino"; category sorting can't possibly be affected here".

Obviously, to determine that, you went to the category to see what else was there. It would have been more productive for you to take the hint and at that time look for other items that were out of place in the indexing of that category, and go fix them, rather than making a pointless revert. I did only find one that was clearly out of place to fix now in that category, so maybe you just overlooked it? Gene Nygaard 11:30, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Outrageous misconduct

You can't "speedy keep" a discussion with a large delete majority, especially of a category which has already been deleted once!

Please do not close any more discussions as it is patently obvious that you have an utter contempt for consensus and different points of view and have no intention of behaving properly. Chicheley 17:40, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You should be banned from Wikipedia

I'm sorry if I stepped on your pet peeve, but I stand by my actions. It is your disregard for established consensus related to maintenance categories that must be kept on check. As I said before, there is no better alternative for them at the moment so the will stay until a better one is found, not before. And I believe I am the best judge of what actions I shall keep performing on wiki. Thanks for your concern. I will say no more of the matter. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 09:38, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You attitude is an utter disgrace. You are arrogant and unfit to edit Wikipedia. Please do not do so again as your contempt for consensus is intolerable. Chicheley 20:52, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Rune. If you look at Chicheley's talk page and follow up some of the leads on it, you will see that it is he who has utter contempt for consensus, especially where it is reached beforehand by members of a project who are trying (despite people like him) to improve their project structure for the benefit of their readers. I've had a look at some of your work and it is excellent. Wikipedia needs good editors like you. Keep it up. All the best. --BlackJack | talk page 11:09, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Olmec

Hi, I ask an arbitration about French School. Can you give me your opinion. Thanks again. Olmeque 22:07, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am disappointed that you protected the page right after Olmeque's umpteenth reversion and so have given him absolutely no incentive to discuss matters. Olmeque's single purpose here in English Wikipedia is to have his exact paragraph inserted into the Olmec article. As you can see from the Olmec Talk page, User:Maunus,User:CJLL Wright, and I -- long term Mesoamerican contributors all -- have been attempting to engage him with various rewordings and requests, but Olmeque has not changed one jot in his paragraph, refused to elaborate, and auto-reverts any time anyone touches it.
As mentioned, we weren't getting anywhere when it wasn't frozen, but at least we other editors could attempt to edit his work. How can this be resolved if his exact text is frozen into the article? Madman 22:33, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You replied on my talk page: " I cannot go around taking sides in an issue which at the moment seems to arise from one editor's language barrier." I agree with this statement. I would suggest that the article not be frozen, so as to allow give and take within the article. Thanks, Madman 13:06, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to say that Madman doesn't want discutted. He prefered revert for a personnal problem with me and I don't understand why. I had accept that "French school" be moved out of the "History of Research", I had accept that Madman removed "French School" designation with argument's contestable. Then I had accept again removed no justify of the descriptions that I write necessary for understand the school ("French school's") promoted by Christine Niederberger and developed by Caterina Magni. Finally Madman removed Niederberger from association with Magni theory and said "no evidence to support this" ? I could continue… To finish I can read here I "refuse to elaborate" and I "auto-reverts any time". But who refuse to elaborate really ? and what Madman wants ?
I regret this manner but I hope more intelligence than Madman had showed until now. Olmeque 21:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carl Christensen

Hi.

You removed a deletion request for Carl Christensen asking for proof of this request or to use WP:OFFICE. The deletion request is on the page history here. When this failed (someone reverted presumably thinking it was vandalism), Carl sent me a private message on the CPDN boards saying he was leaving CPDN at the end of his contract. He knew I was the one who set up the page. So I do know that the request is from the subject not an impersonator. I set up the page when it was announced that he was becoming a Oxford's Microsoft Fellow in Distributed Computing. That position has been declined. Is this sufficient to allow the page to be deleted? If, not please let me know what else you need or what I need to do. Thank you crandles 14:49, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Field Hockey

Why did you delete the Field Hockey Template I made.? It makes no sense, please explain..?! LAUBO 15:48, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

- But why would you want to move it to my user space in the first place, under WP:GUS, which talks about 'controversial userboxes', there is no reason not to have this box as a template for field hockey-players. GUS is only a proposition, not policy.

North America Article

Hello dear Rune.welsh, I come here because it seems to me that there is a Point of View issue in the article about North America and I know that you can help. It seems that the problem is simply this:

- Some users try to make emphasis in the fact that Mexico is part of Central America in a very particular UN subdivision of the world economic areas. They claim that the UN is neutral and because of this we should keep the current subdivision of the continent. They also point out that some other publications use this subdivision, like the Encyclopedia Britanicca.

- Some other users including me consider that we should not use that subdivision because the UN makes clear that it's used only for statistical convinience, and it missguides people to believe that Mexico is part of Central America. We also claim that most of the people from Canada and the US, and the people from Mexico and Central America, generally consider Mexico part of North America.

I hope you can help because I feel that this issue is very controversial and I do not see good attitudes from a part of the people arguing. I'd like to make a neutral article, but it seems hard. Please take a look at this and help.

AlexCovarrubias 06:18, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why don't you come and help? :( Please read the discussion on the article North America. I was successful getting the article semi protected. Now the article is not protected at all and one of the anonimous IP users threatened that he is going to keep changing the country table in the article no matter what. What can I do? Is there something else to do? It seems that I am the only person that thinks that Mexico should not be listed as Central American. Help me out! :( AlexCovarrubias 05:13, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

C'est de l'auto-promotion et les mêmes arguments de l'article apparaissent très clairement sur plusieurs sites de Olmec98. Olmeque 12:25, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rune.welsh,

You've deleted the page Vignette (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to "making way for merge" [1], but the merging process seems not complete. Could you restore the deleted edits? Thanks in advance, Korg (talk) 23:00, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Several months ago you kindly responded with some comments on the preparation of List of temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for submission as a featured list. Would you mind reviewing the progress - I think the only thing lacking is that each row does not yet have a picture. However, since pictures aren't required, I think it is ready for review. Thx - will be placing on FLC later this week - when I'll have time to respond to suggestions :) --Trödel 17:52, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
