Tks for invite

[edit]

Thanks for the PM roger. I'm interested in joining the AFL Wikiproject but I'm not quite sure how to. Help would be appreciated. Chemical Prophet 20:16, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Rogerthat. I'm not much of a footy follower, but I do keep track of high profile Australian people, so I might be able to help out from time to time. I've just added some info to Ron Casey's page (including his date of birth) as my token gesture for now. Noticed you've got the McGrath family on your to do list. I have some McGrath's in my background, but no famous footy players as far as I know. Cheers JackofOz 08:41, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gday Roger, thanks for your nice comments regarding my work with SEN 1116 and adding some articles on sports broadcasters, they are much appreciated.

I actually go to RMIT as well and am an aspirting sports journalist as you may have noticed with some of the articles I have writen for other websites.

Yeah, I would love to do some work on Aussie Rules football and please contact me to let me know what needs to be done.

--Ben.carbonaro 10:57, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

G'day again Roger, thanks for leaving a note.

Yeah, I go to RMIT as well but am a Tafe student and start again in two weeks time, so a bit before you mate.

I love my AFL football, but am currently looking at the media guide for the Australian Winter Olympic Team and am going to write a few pieces for various websites.

Do you have any media aspirations like myself?

My specialist sport I write about at the moment is the netball and in particular, the Commonwealth Bank Trophy as well any games played by the Australian team here in Melbourne.

Most recent major event I covered was the Commonwealth Games Swimming Trials, which were an awesome experience and swimming is another sport would like to write about again in the future.

--Ben.carbonaro 11:24, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Roger, Thanks again for the nice comments about my writing and my sports journalism work.

Who is responsible for the Winter Olympics coverage, as I would be willing to write a daily report if if required?

Ben.carbonaro 12:04, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi again, Thanks for the link to the noticeboard.

I am still a writing and editing student, but should I still talk about my journalist credentals?

Worried it come across as boasting type behaviour?

How to change headings and redirections.

[edit]

How do we make changes to headings and some of the things in boxes? ie, the Freo B&F is "The Doig Medal", not "The George Doig Medal". I've changed the text and the link on the ProjectAFL page, but how do you "reverse" the redirection - ie Doig Medal redirects to "George Doig Medal", not the other way around?

Same thing with Teal/TAC cup. They aren't the same competitions (one national, the other Vic (with Tas/NSW/ACT) but they both redirect to each other. --—Preceding unsigned comment added by The-Pope (talkcontribs)

WP:AFL invite

[edit]

Hey, Roger. Thanks for the invite, but my knowledge of Aussie Rules extends to a quick read of the rules on here many months ago! Actually, it was the first ever Wikipedia article I ever read. Having said that, I intend to experience my first live game when I'm in Oz later this year. The trip there (via most of Asia) means I'm also very short on time at the moment and I don't know what my interwebnet access will be like over the coming months.

Best of luck, though. Very ambitious!

IainP (talk) 10:35, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the reply. Channel 4 over here used to show Aussie Rules years and years ago, but there's now virtually no coverage. I do seem to recall that one of the biggest statistics pages listed all the injuries to players. The word "gouge" seemed to occur fairly frequently. So, essentially, you get to stand around in the sun, drink beer, and watch a bunch of scary men beat seven bells out of each other around a bunch of rules nobody really understands.

Sounds like a superb way to spend an afternoon, if you ask me! ;)

IainP (talk) 10:45, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I really should look this up, but a couple of quick questions if you have the time:

1) How easy is it to get tickets "on the day"? I'm going to be in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane (so far) at some point.

2) Will the season still be on around September/October as I think it's going to be nearer then by the time I get there? I set off in 4 weeks for Thailand. After that it's kind of "play it by ear". Eek.

Oh, regardless of where I end up I'll be supporting the Newcastle team. Force of habit seeing as I follow them over here!

IainP (talk) 10:54, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Again, thanks for the help :) If I can't manage a ticket when I head over later this year, my other half and I will be over again at some point anyway. May have better luck then.

Roger - I would have used a cleanup tag, but at the time, the article consisted of 4 lines, each of which was an artist name. It looked like useless cruft. Is "Brandongardiner" a hoax

[edit]

Roger

From your User Page I see that you are an Essnedon fan, so maybe you can help me? There is an article entitled "Brandongardiner" - I think intended to be Brandon Gardiner- who is described as an Essendon player in the 1960s.

However, I smell a hoax. I've tried various Australian Rules sites but 1) Specific claims don't stack up (e.g. lost the Brownlow medal by 1 vote in 1968) and 2) I can't even find anyone by that name. If it were a subject I were more confident in I'd mark it for speedy deletion, but as a "Pom" I'm hesitant to go there on Aussie Rules!

Could you take a look?

Thanks!

PS I'm leaving a similar note on the author's talk page.

I think I made a mistake about Tim Lane. Probably there are two. I was talking about the former Wallaby assistant coach (rugby union). I have disambiguated on the Tim Lane page. Regards, --Historian 05:44, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your RFA

[edit]

Hi Rogerthat. I have voted oppose to your admin at the moment, but wanted to make sure you understand that I (and many others) consider your contributions to the AFL project and articles are good and valuable. Practice using edit summaries, and less superlative adjectives for your favourite players, and you'll sail through RFA in a few months if you still want it. --Scott Davis Talk 11:16, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ditto. Also, may I suggest that if you think this vote is doomed (and I think it is, this time) it would be good to withdraw it. You've had all the pain you need; you've got the feedback you need to succeed next time; don't drag it out. You are fully entitled to withdrawn any time. William M. Connolley 11:56, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rogerthat, I hope you are holding up alright after this RfA. Feel free to hold me to the standards which I have asked of you, if and when my day comes, which will probably be in the next few months. The thing about the edit summaries appeared to be quite blunt because it seems like such a standard thing that people will just say -not enough eidt summary. Also avoid trying to solicit votes for RfA, because it is viewed in the same way as campaigning on personal talk pages to vote save or delete on AfDs, even if you do not explicitly advise them to vote either way, as people can usually deduce it from the demographic which is being lobbied. Regards, Blnguyen 04:25, 20 February 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Rogerthat, I read your invitation to vote for you on my talk page. I haven't voted simply because I don't vote in these sorts of things. I prefer to limit my involvement in WP affairs. Cheers. --The Brain of Morbius 03:05, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oporto restaurant

[edit]

I think you created this one?? Anyway, just to say that I moved the "menu" section to the talk page, the article was in serious danger of being AfD'd as advertising the way it was.. the company seems notable but there are plenty of eds out there who would just want to bin it for being mostly an in-depth account of 10 variations of chicken-in-a-bun... a link to a news source or 3 bigging it up wouldn't hurt it either. ++Deiz 04:05, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: Adminship

[edit]

Why do you want to be an admin anyway? The people who look for any excuse to oppose (omg he didn't use edit summaries) most likely are all admins and don't want to let you into their "club." I say, "screw 'em" and don't re-apply. Real-life cliques are stupid and internet cliques are just pathetic. Juppiter 07:08, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Roger: I don't think we've ever met here on Wikipedia, but I wanted to leave a comment about your ongoing RfA. It seems like you're being opposed because of your lack of edit summaries. I think that's a valid reason. However, if you run again, I'd like to know in order to support you. I just learned a lot from your AFL work, and I think that needs to be recognized. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Bratschetalk 04:40, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Football codes

[edit]

Hi Roger. You might find you get less angry reactions from league or union fans if you acknowledged that rugby league and rugby union are distinct sports, rather than referring to them both as rugby football. They have quite a few differences these days, and while they're both obviously inferior to the game which originated in Australia, they do deserve to be mentioned separately. Resizing images in afl infobox player template

[edit]

Hi Roger -Good work on the AFL project! I was trying to resize some images of Colin Watson (down to 140 pixels of the original) as the default size in the template seems to be 200. I tried using
"image name = [[Image:Colin_Watson.jpg|140px]]"
and although the image is resized down correctly, there is text around the picture. I also tried copying the syntax at the St Kilda Football Club article but that didn't work. Any clues?? thanks. Diverman 11:40, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rudy Gay

[edit]

Hi Rogerthat. I saw the message you posted at WP:NFL, and I'm really confused by your actions. You are nominating a basketball player, Rudy Gay, for deletion because one of your articles, Tom Hawkins, was turned into a redirect (not deleted as you claim in the AFD)? Whether out of spite, or out of to garner attention, it does not seem very productive. Hopefully you'll be able to come to accords with User:Harro5 and find a (disambiguated) home for your article; at the very least you have the right to have it taken through AFD. Best of luck with the that, and let me know if I can be of any assistance. ×Meegs 11:28, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. If you mean to go through with Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rudy Gay, which I do not suggest, you need to follow the third step (here) and list it in today's afd log. ×Meegs 11:32, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ta mate,

have been browsing over the site for quite a few months now and i've probably done the wrong thing and jumped straight in with only basic understanding of the tools, adding sean denham and john barnes on a whim when i had nothing better to do. have re-edited the hell outta them. the facts i have i'm quite positive are accurate, yet they probably need a pollish (due to my learning of the tools) and on checking the afl/wiki section can see the requested players/footy sections who require a page. i do get the general jist writing sites ie. no soapboxing or opinion, just fact. also added myself to the group albeit clumsily.

have also added a few definitions to your footy slang section and re-checked them. some of them are a bit old, from when i was a kid. they are: clanger, tiggy touchwood, workhorse, speedster, arctic park and (my favourite) show pony. feel free to edit any as i understand they may be a bit off and it is your baby.

cheers, go dons

Your decision to proceed with the AFD nomination violates WP:POINT, and displays extremely poor judgment. I understand your frustration, but please don't do it again. -Colin Kimbrell 16:24, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've begun an AfD here. Hopefully this can move to end our mini-feud; I'd like to get back to the job of writing good quality articles, as I believe an article like Malcolm Blight is much more useful than Travis Varcoe, an article on a guy who hasn't played an AFL game. Please remember I'm as commited to the cause as you for AFL on Wikipedia (see my relevant contribs) and this isn't a personal thing. I'm looking out for the project, and Boomtish's style of writing doesn't benefit that at all; maybe this process will help him realise that, and see what we want. Thanks. Harro5 11:47, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome. I have started a little project to automatically create a number of West Coast player articles based on the data on the RLeague site. Unfortunately because RLeague only goes back to 1993, I am only going to make articles where the player had their debut match in 1994 or later, so I can be sure the stats are complete. That leaves 43 West Coast players that dont already have articles, so hopefully the effort is quicker than writing them all individually. If it works out well, I might be able to apply it generally for all teams, which would be probably around 500 new articles if the West Coast numbers are any indication. I have made a bit of a personal sandbox for the bits of data here. I'll let you know when I have finished making, and submitted, the articles. Remy B 06:08, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, I'm doing it in Access, and its really all over the place. If the stub articles that I make turn out to be a good contribution, I might consider writing a PHP app which can extract all the information automatically so I dont have to do all the manual hacks that I'm currently going through, then I only have to write it once and all the AFL player articles will be made in one go. I'll delete it if you don't see a need for it as part of the wider AFL scope, as I prefer (now) to simply add 'former player' etc to an article introduction text which seems to work better. -- Longhair 07:24, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've deleted the category and reverted my own edits. Here's to clearer thinking. -- Longhair 14:41, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Belated Thanks

[edit]

Thank you for the invite (of a couple of months ago), I have been between comps for a while.

In answer, I am an Eagles fan, the connection between my username and the crows is an unhappy coincidence. I will check out the AFL project, and will contribute how I can.

Thanks for the invite, mate, but as a Pom living in Pommyland I don't have much access to the sport. Years ago Channel 4 did show matches over here, but that's stopped now. Around that time there was a worldwide series of exhibition matches (London, Toronto and a couple of other places) and I went to see Carlton play Hawthorn at the Oval here in London – a cracking match and a great day out (about 17 000 000 Aussies, Fosters, Dinkum Dogs...) but there's been nothing on UK TV here for years. Pity :-( I see the AFL article doesn't mention that under broadcasting though - I'll see if I can find more details of whan Channel 4 were showing matches regularly and add that to the article. Cheers. Tonywalton  | Talk 10:06, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shows how long ago that was - that was Carlton and North Melbourne, not Hawthorn. It was 1987 though, so I suspect the Alzheimer's must be kicking in again! Tonywalton  | Talk 10:18, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bonzer website (as I believe you Australians say - I've seen Home & Away ;-) ). Thanks for that. Tonywalton  | Talk 11:00, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2006 VFL Season

[edit]

Hi,

Don't know if you'ld be interested in this information, but I made a new article called 2006 VFL Season. It has the VFL result and ladder for seniors and reserves. I'm think of adding the TAC Cup results and ladder under the same article.

Re: Ladder

[edit]

Hi Rogerthat,

The adding more info to the AFL Ladder sounds like a good idea. Would you like me to do it?.

I was also thinking of add a home many games they've won, lost or drawn at home and away as will as how many games they've won at certain grounds or stadiums in a different table.

And with the %/Pts in a larger font, do you mean putting it in BOLD writing.

Scotty56 --Stats Fanatic 05:16, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
I moved Template:2006 AFL season/Ladder to Template:2006 AFL season/"Simple" Ladder since you said it should be done using one simple ladder and one advanced ladder. So, I made another "template" ladder called Template:2006 AFL season/"Advanced" Ladder If you want to continue it because I started but didn't have time that would be great. But I'm going to be doing it sometime around 4:30PM AEST.
I created some new templates for the VFL teams. Here's what each one is, if your interested:
Template:VFL Ben = Bendigo Bombers, Template:VFL Box = Box Hill Hawks, Template:VFL Cas = Casey Scorpions,
Template:VFL Cob = Coburg Tigers, Template:VFL Fra = Frankston Dolphins, Template:VFL Gee = Geelong Cats,
Template:VFL NBR = North Ballarat Roosters, Template:VFL NBu = Northern Bullants, Template:VFL PtM = Port Melbourne Boroughs, Template:VFL San = Sandringham Zebras, Template:VFL Tas = Tasmanian Devils, Template:VFL Wer = Werribee Tigers,
Template:VFL Wil = Williamstown Seagulls.
One last thing is there a VFL Logo and TAC Cup team Logos on Wikipedia? If so can I used it on 2006 VFL Season article?

Hi,
I finally fished Template:2006 AFL season/"Advanced" Ladder. So, If you want to look at it feel free

Roger, can I draw your attention to sirengate? I made a start, but it needs some help. Snottygobble 03:19, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I used "sirengate" because that is what the newspapers are calling it over here (WA), and because I couldn't think of a better title. Personally the title is way too melodramatic for an encyclopaedia, and I'd like to see it changed. Maybe York Park siren controversy? Snottygobble 03:26, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do i do that? (join those 2 things?)

Hi Roger,

[edit]

Hmmm, have I upset youse?

I was just rambling about and decided to look at your pages.

Why are you using American spelling for an Aussie game's story? Isn't Aussie English good enough?

Oh, I may just be a bit pikkie, but then I seem to have been born to be an English editor.

In my writing I try to give people simple explanations, solid simple English and not too many sloppy punctuation marks (like Americans do).

If I have trodden on your toes—or those of your mates—I'm sorry. I just cringe at some of the stuff I read on Wikipedia and cannot resist going in and doing something about it. --Lin 10:04, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ted Flynn on AfD

Heelo Rogerthat. This article about an Essendon player, which you have created, has been put on AfD. Regards, ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! - review me 06:14, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Colour

[edit]

For accessibility reasons, coloured text should be avoided where possible, and only used when necessary. Applying it to large sections of text looks messy, although if you really think it helps identify the team, you could probably find a compromise. ed g2stalk 09:42, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You could put them back if you really think it's worth it - but almost all other category pages use just text, like plain articles. ed g2stalk 12:58, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject

[edit]

Roger

Im guessing the idea behind what you want us members of the AFL wiki project to do is to put as much as we can about the AFL?

If so, can you give me any ideas of what i can start adding to the project. I was thinking about expanding some of the SANFL clubs pages aswell as AFL with me being a croweater. Im looking forward to adding to the archives. also, good work on what everyones done so far, its coming along well.

Thanks

[edit]

Heh, thanks for the invite. I'll check it out.

And I do have an account, I was just too lazy to log in that day. I'm Spring1.

Images

[edit]

Hey Roger, thanks for welcoming me into the wikiproject, i should be adding some more players some time soon. But i just want to ask you a favour. I am currently in the process of expanding the Autopilot Off band page. I added the band table but since im extremely green on wikipedia i am unsure about the image uploading and the copyrighting rules etc. Could you please upload an image of them into the table? if you could id appreciate it. Or if someone else reading this first could do it thatd be good.

Hope the bombers stop losin some time soon :) At least they arent as bad as the tigers :D. Seeya. Sambo2612 13:26, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
