Cold fusion

[edit]

Hi, please don't make personal attacks. Calling other users nitwit skeptics is a violation of Wikipedia policy and doesn't help create a harmonious editing environment. Thanks for your understanding, - FrancisTyers 04:01, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I understand, but stop making blatantly stupid edits. I understand the controversy surrounding Jed Rothwell's editorial changes. But they have nothing to do with sections like the External Links that have existed for months and years without controversy and serve an important purpose for people trying to find out more information about cold fusion. So, please don't cut more than necessary. Rock nj 04:58, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MegaWatts

[edit]

Hello! I too welcome you to Wikipedia. I noticed you created an article "MegaWatts" which contained only a link to the Megawatt article. I thought you might like to know that you can do that in a more user-friendly fashion with a redirect. Enjoy Wikipedia. --RobertGtalk 12:04, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I love the new article youve written over at 2nd Avenue Subway. Second Avenue Line has been on my list of articles to fix up and improve for months and I just havent had time. Obviously we need to fix that there are two seperate articles, so I'd like to work with you and anyone else who wants to on merging them. For simplicity's sake, lets keep merge discussions at Second Avenue Line, since it is the older of the articles and more people will have it on the watch lists. Thanks again for your wonderful article! -Lanoitarus (talk) .:. 23:34, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliments regarding the 2nd Avenue Subway page. I think the original Second Ave page covers it pretty well too. Perhaps the parts to keep from 2nd Ave version are the A New 21st Century Attempt and See Also, because they have relevant information that isn't covered in the orginal artical and the links are useful.
Regaring the image of the 2nd Avenue Subway from the MTA website. The one arguement I would make in favor of using it is the fact that it comes from a publicly released PDF document about the project scope. It seems to me that such a publicly required document should be rather easy to reuse in a non-commercial format like Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rock nj (talkcontribs)
  • As I said on the images talk page, the problem isnt the legality as much as it is wikipedia policy. We can only use images that are Public Domain, Fair Use, or Licensed under GFDL or similar licenses. This is none, so although it might be legal (a debatable fact anyway), its still against our policy. If i have time i might recreate a image to replace it with. -Lanoitarus (talk) .:. 00:05, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've gone over the policy at Wikipedia:Fair use, and I believe that we can re-add this image as fair use as long as it is only used in these article and to illustrate the subject in question, and no suitable free image exists. I've updated both articles accordingly, as well as the image page. -Lanoitarus (talk) .:. 01:19, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyrights

[edit]

Rock, a note about the images you've uploaded. I think you need to read up on copyright issues. First, the MTA images are not public domain, only works of the federal government and state governments of California and North Carolina are automaticly in the public domain. The rest may be (and probably are) protected by copyright, unless there is a specific statute that says otherwise. Second, images by non-profits or other private individuals (even if they don't have an explicit copyright statement) are automaticly copyrighted under US Copyright Law. We cannot just take these images and use them. Please review all of the images you've uploaded and tag them with the appropriate copyright tag, including possibly {{no license}}. Thanks. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 15:19, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Image:ESA.jpg, please stop uploading images and using the {{PD-USGov}} on them when they are not products of the US federal government. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 19:24, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, got it. But I do think that under the Fair Use provisions of copyright law it is suitable to use MTA images from their publicy released documents to enhance the information in a non-commercial forum like Wikipedia. I think this is exactly what Fair Use was intended for. Informational purposes in a non-commerical manner. The images help the reader understand what is written in the article. Rock nj 20:39, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, this does not preclude you from making a fair use claim. Just follow the guidelines at Wikipedia:Fairuse and use the {{Non-free fair use in}} template as needed. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 22:01, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great Work!

[edit]

I hereby award you this Exceptional Newcomer award for creating a great article at 2nd Avenue Subway, for immediately working to merge your article with Second Avenue Line when you found out that article already existed, and for your numerous other contributions to other MTA articles. Welcome, and keep up the great work! -Lanoitarus (talk) .:. 17:59, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:7_Train_Banner.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

You removed the 7-Line Banner which was from the MTA's website. I understand using MTA images is a grey area. But why did you also remove the planning document image that showed the route of the 7 line extension? This is from a public planning document, released to the public and very relevant to the topic at hand.

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. --OrphanBot 09:03, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

7-Line Extension Images

[edit]

You removed the 7-Line Banner which was from the MTA's website. I understand using MTA images is a grey area, so I don't dispute that you removed this image. But why did you also remove the planning document image that showed the route of the 7 line extension? This is from a public planning document released by the MTA to the public for information purposes and very relevant to the topic at hand, the extension of this line. I believe using an image from a publically released planning document should be fine in this non-commercial context, under the Fair Use context of copyright policy.

Without links to the specific images, I can't verify it, but most likely it's because the images don't have a copyright tag on the image description page. --Carnildo 05:04, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I will resubmit the 7 line extension diagram from the MTA's public document under Fair Use with a proper link and we'll take it from there. It seems to me that this is exactly what fair use was intended for. An information site like Wikipedia with no commercial intentions wanting to use an image to enhance an informational page. Thanks for uploading Image:Raritan_River_RR.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, contact Carnildo.

Hi!

I removed the section you added from the article on Evolution. It was well-written, properly sourced and describes a significant find. It isn't however notable enough for inclusion in the article if you ask me. There are hundreds of "missing links" which are only very briefly discussed in a summary style. If the article were to mention every important fossil find, it would most likely become very bloated. —Gabbe 07:30, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure the fossil is significant, but articles should be kept brief and written in a summary style. —Gabbe 13:15, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cedar Street Subway

[edit]

Future

  • I'm curious how the Cedar Street Subway is utilized if the tunnel entrance is at Center St. and the McCarter Hwy. Sorry if that sounds sarcastic, its not meant to be, but I'm just curious where the two lines (Raymond Blvd and Cedar St deviate). Also is segment two of the NERL supposed to be light rail down Mulberry St or utilize the subway and take a more westerly path if you know? Thanks for any info you can give me.

Yes, it's me

[edit]

Covy! Yes, of course I remember you! Mr. Stewart's class ... remember how we all (you, Robbie Holcombe and I, at least) had to get graded on our behavior on a daily basis at one point? Definitely class clowns (although I was the new kid that year).

How are you? Where do you live now? Email me; this is really not what talk pages are meant for. Daniel Case 22:46, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:River From Tressel.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:River From Tressel.JPG. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Global Warming

[edit]

Hi Rock nj, I was reading the article on Peak Oil - which is excellent and followed the link to global warming and was very surprised that that article did not refer to peak oil even in passing.

I've added a section with some basic facts effectively inviting readers of global warming to visit peak oil to find out more. I don't know why some of the global warming evangelists are being so upetty about it, but they are giving me hassle. I noticed you were a contributor to the peak oil article, and I am leaving this to ask for some support88.110.38.52 22:16, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to give you the courtesy of telling you why I had to revert your edits to the above article. Both contentions that you made were really a form of unsourced speculation. The point about fossil fuels seems logical, but is in fact not supported by any reliable external sources. National issues tend favoring Bush over Gore or Kerry would more likely point to gun control and (to a lesser extent) social issues as opposed to coal. However, the only large chunk of voters that get worked up over coal tend to be labor Democrats that supported Gore and Kerry (those counties were among the blue counties in those elections). As far as the affinity to southern culture, that is a pretty strong stretch. While both central Appalachia and the American South share some similarities (rural poor whites), the cultural connection is limitied at best. For geographical expediency, WV is sometimes lumped in with the south, the Midwest, Mid Atlantic, or the North East, but none are great fits. I've actually told the same thing to someone from NC that tried to lump us in with "northeasterners" before because we have no death penalty and elect alot of Democrats. Anyway, thanks for your interest in WV and keep up the good work. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 01:47, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some good points. Your point about coal may be more accurate in terms of big cash donations going to Bush over Gore and Kerry from some of the state's old coal money folk. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 02:15, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Global spread of H5N1

[edit]

Global spread of H5N1 is about a specific strain of H5N1 that does not yet exist in North America.

H5N1 (like the other avian flu viruses) has strains called "highly pathogenic" (HP) and "low-pathogenic" (LP). Avian influenza viruses that cause HPAI are highly virulent, and mortality rates in infected flocks often approach 100%. LPAI viruses are generally of lower virulence, but these viruses can serve as progenitors to HPAI viruses. The current strain of H5N1 responsible for die-offs of domestic birds in Asia is an HPAI strain; other strains of H5N1 occurring elsewhere in the world are less virulent and, therefore, are classified as LPAI strains. All HPAI strains identified to date have involved H5 and H7 subtypes. The distinction concerns pathogenicity in poultry, not humans. Normally a highly pathogenic avian virus is not highly pathogenic to either humans or non-poultry birds. This current strain of H5N1 is unusual in being deadly to so many species.

H5N1 has mutated through antigenic drift into dozens of highly pathogenic varieties, but all currently belonging to genotype Z of avian influenza virus H5N1. Genotype Z emerged through reassortment in 2002 from earlier highly pathogenic genotypes of H5N1 that first appeared in China in 1996 in birds and in Hong Kong in 1997 in humans. The H5N1 viruses from human infections and the closely related avian viruses isolated in 2004 and 2005 belong to a single genotype, often referred to as genotype Z.

Genotype Z, also called "Asian lineage HPAI A(H5N1)", is divided into two antigenic clades. Clade 1 includes human and bird isolates from Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia and bird isolates from Laos and Malaysia. Clade 2 viruses were first identified in bird isolates from China, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea before spreading westward to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. The clade 2 viruses have been primarily responsible for human H5N1 infections that have occurred during late 2005 and 2006, according to WHO. Genetic analysis has identified six subclades of clade 2, three of which have a distinct geographic distribution and have been implicated in human infections:

Subclade 1, Indonesia Subclade 2, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (called EMA) Subclade 3, China

Low pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 (LPAI H5N1) also called "North American" H5N1 commonly occurs in wild birds. In most cases, it causes minor sickness or no noticeable signs of disease in birds. It is not known to affect humans at all. The only concern about it is that it is possible for it to be transmitted to poultry and in poultry mutate into a highly pathogenic strain.

In the past, there was no requirement for reporting or tracking LPAI H5 or H7 detections in wild birds so states and universities tested wild bird samples independently of USDA. However, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recently changed its requirement of reporting detections of avian influenza. Effective in 2006, all confirmed LPAI H5 and H7 AI subtypes must be reported to the OIE because of their potential to mutate into highly pathogenic strains. Therefore, USDA now tracks these detections in wild birds, backyard flocks, commercial flocks and live bird markets. WAS 4.250 (talk) 11:32, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:C&a logo.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File permission problem with File:Milstone Railroad Clyde.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Milstone Railroad Clyde.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

Speedy deletion nomination of Great Valley Rail Trail

[edit]

Hello Rock nj,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Great Valley Rail Trail for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. CoffeeWithMarkets (talk) 08:04, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Short-lived proposal that went nowhere, a decade out of date. Notability for failed idea lacking

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Image source problem with File:Brownfields.gif

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Brownfields.gif.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:18, 15 April 2022 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 11:18, 15 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
