Spelling corrections and links

I noticed you've corrected Noumea to Nouméa in a few articles - thanks for that. However, it seems that AWB RETF doesn't work on links. Consequently, these articles still have a linked Noumea while all the unlinked references have been changed to Nouméa. Not a serious problem, but something to look out for. Eenglish in pool and billiards related articles

Hey Rjwilmsi. Regarding you edit to Carom billiards, many people are not aware that the word English has a special meaning in billiards. It is a noun referring to sidespin, and when used in that context, it is not capitalized (just as the French in french fries is not normally capitalized by way of analogy). AWB problems

One of your AWB edits swaps date=February 2008 with year=2008|Month=Februrary in citation templates, changing some one way, and some the other. I reverted that one, but please check your AWB parameters to see if there are other such changes. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 14:17, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, some templates such as cite web uses 'year' and 'month' for such dates, whereas other templates such as cite news don't offer 'year' and 'month', so 'date' is required. I've found out that I've made some incorrect edits to some cite news templates (as I incorrectly thought it supported 'month' and 'year'), so I'm now going back through past edits to identify any problems. By reverting my corrective edit to 7 World Trade Centre you will find that some cite news references don't have a date displayed. I recommend you reinstate my edit. Your changes to {{cite journal}} template changing "|date=" to "|year=" are not in line the the Template Syntax

Hi Rjwilmsi, you did this edit modifying fields in the {{cite journal}} template. I´m wondering if you are doing the right thing. I generally try to pull the latest version of the template from Wikipedia:Citation_templates and there the syntax clearly is "|date=". If I only know the year it is of course more logical to change "|date=" to "|year=" - but leaving the "|date=" field has advantages, as it would allow somebody else to enter the date in a later edit, if they know it. Basically, however, I consider this type of edit incompatible with the overall purpose of using templates, which precisely is to provide uniform templates across all articles, possibly enabling future semi-intelligent extraction of metadata or categories (for instance if you use the "|birth_date= 9999-99-99" field in a biography template, you can automatically generate the [[Category:9999 births]] to the article later, etc etc).

To make a long story short, I doubt that changing fully functional fields in a template to something that is not in the latest template version, is not right thing to do,, kind regards, Power.corrupts (talk) 09:25, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Citation templates seems to provide a summary of each template, not a full list of fields. Template:Cite journal clearly shows that year & month are available for use where there's no full date. I don't see any problem. Any metadata extractor would be able to use year & month as easily as date, or prehaps more easily as otherwise it would have to cater for various formats of dates that weren't in fact full dates. You're right that there is no difference between the Unicode n-dash and HTML – as both have the same visible appearance. The edit I made was to delink the year part of a date range, which is in compliance to the Manual of Style. I will switch to the Unicode character if you think that's better. Citation changes in AWB

Good Afternoon (at least it is in Virginia USA, not sure where you are) I notice you do a lot of changes using AWB and I was wondering if you would be interested in sharing the code that you use so that I can use it in my edits also? I also do a lot of edits in AWB and I am always looking for more things that I can add to the list of things that I look for.--Kumioko (talk) 20:07, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Good evening from England. I am happy to share the code I use for AWB, but with a couple of caveats:

1. first of all, I am granting you read-only access. You are welcome to suggest improvements, or report bugs to me, but I would prefer to maintain my code myself. You can of course take your own copy to work on.
2. secondly, there may be bugs in the code I use; if there are, and another editor complains about an edit you make, you are not entitled to come back here and blame me for the problem! (Though as I've said you are welcome to report issues, but I am not making any guarantees to fix them.)
3. Thirdly, I don't intend to provide technical support for the script, so if you don't understand regex well you might be best to leave it alone. Please also note that the large number of fixes means that AWB will run quite a bit slower with them enabled.

That said, I have exported the XML section of the AWB settings file that relates to general fixes. This is where I store all of my fixes relating to citation templates and various other fixes I am working on. It is a work in progress so may change over time, though it is designed to be 100% accurate. If you intend to use it you would probably be advised to check back for any changes I make, since I may discover problems and fix them. The ordering of the fixes is important, and certain fixes are disabled for good reasons. Having provided the necessary warnings, good luck; the link is User:Rjwilmsi/genfixes. I have been using your general fixes throughout the day with no problems but I noticed that occasionally it changes nashes to -. Stephens City, Virginia

Hello...thanks for the changes you made (removing the "of" in between the month and year) to the "History" section of the Stephens City page, but I had to revert them. That entire section is under an "OTRS" agreement from the Newtown History Center. We can add to it, just not take away (I don't understand it either). However, the regex doesnt seem to work as it is..

Changing it for (\[\[[Cc][Aa][Tt][Ee][Gg][Oo][Rr][Yy] ?:)([^\]]+\]\])(.*?)\1\2

makes it work...

As does

(\n?\[\[[Cc][Aa][Tt][Ee][Gg][Oo][Rr][Yy] ?:)([^\]]+\]\])(.*?)\1\2

What can you suggest/reccommend?
