Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Rickprelinger. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Rick Prelinger, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Jmertel23 (talk) 22:50, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you.
[edit]Thanks for the headsup, jmertel23. I respect the COI policy and have attempted not to make significant edits to the article (which I did not originally create, and I don't believe it constitutes autobiography, as others chose what facts and what not to include and how to cite them). A review of my edits shows that I have corrected minor grammatical errors and made a few updates (occupational status, new films I have produced, fixed errors relating to numbers of films in the collection, etc.). None of these changes have, in my opinion, affected the emphasis or POV of the article.
If changes of this sort constitute COI, I'll refrain from further such edits. However, I'd appreciate your clarification on whether it violates COI policy when, for instance, I update references to "associate professor" to "professor" when my academic status changes, or when the number of online films hosted at Internet Archive changes over time.
I appreciate any clarification you may be able to offer.

hello! Just a heads up that I reverted your edit on the above article. You might know it to be a fact but the source you gave does not even mention the article subject. Feel free to add it back if you can find a source that clearly supports the claim.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 02:56, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
- thanks for the message! The source mentions Related Tactics (which operates as a collective and includes the article subject as a member). I'm going to add text that better explains the connection, as this was a highly visible exhibition. Rickprelinger (talk) 03:05, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi. I love what you do with the Prelinger archives. However please resist the urge to add items that you were involved with: Prelinger is listed as a collaborator on that show. See WP:COI, which you clearly have. Notability is not inherited here, so the RT reference means little.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 04:34, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
Ok, I understand. Please revert or edit as is most consistent with WP policy, and I'll keep my hands off this article. And thanks for the kind words! Rickprelinger (talk) 04:55, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
And props for your efforts to address the WP gender gap. Rickprelinger (talk) 05:04, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
- Nah, those stubs are a miniscule dot of nothing compared to what you did with the Prelinger archive.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 12:17, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
Query about the blue box photo
[edit]I saw your post on the Blue Box talk page... am I interpreting it correctly, this was your personal BB at some point in time? If so, I want to hear that story! Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:56, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
I bought it from Wozniak and Jobs in spring 1972, when they walked the dorms at UC Berkeley selling these. I knew what they were after reading the Ron Rosenbaum article. See pages 4 and 5 of this: http://ed-thelen.org/comp-hist/TCMR-V17.pdf. They put on a long evening demo in my dorm room.
