Vandalism

[edit]

I just wanted to say thank you for being pretty close to omnipresent whenever I'm dealing with loads of chronic vandals all at the same time and need someone to throw blocks on them. The help is incredibly appreciated. Trusilver 05:21, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Resolved

Since you indef-blocked Oli Wood, and deleted his "contributions", I'de like it if you could, at a check-user request related to this user, answer the following question: Did this user use a link to WP:IAR as a part of the edit summeries? This seems to be a major part of the method of operation of Hel Hufflepuff's sock-puppets. A list of pages by this user can be found at WP:AN#Edit summary from edits of Oli Wood. Recent edit to your userpage

[edit]

Hi. Terribly sorry but I recently removed a link to the archived version of your userpage since I clicked on it and WP turned up a no page found thingy. I did wonder how all the other editors who keep watching your page let that slip, but since the link simply wasn't working (I tried again and again) I removed it. Sorry! aJCfreak yAk 10:02, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Doubt Riana would mind... the revision was deleted for a while, causing a link failure, but she restored it a few minutes ago... --Dark Falls talk 10:05, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Um. Okays, you didn't mind and I saw the restored page... But I've a question now. You're not a God(dess) or something around these parts are you?! I mean, how do you manage to reply so fast? Do you simply check messages and reply the way we mortals do or do you use any advanced tools?! Or, are you a god? aJCfreak yAk 10:06, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, I'm male... Flattered though I am, the only person 'round here that has divine blood is Jimbo and Riana (Shocking suck-up aren't I!) ... I just have the page watchlisted. --Dark Falls talk 10:11, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re my vandalism report

[edit]

Hi Riana. If you've got the time, I wonder if you could explain to me your edit comment regarding the vandal I reported. Basically I reported a repeating vandal with a history, and no action was taken. To prevent more vandalism from this IP, surely the thing to do would be to ban it..? Cheers. --Mal 22:23, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Riana. In my humble opinion it doesn't appear to be particularly effective. The IP in question here appears to be a school (vandalism occurs during school days). I didn't look through the whole history, but it seemed that there has not been a useful edit in more than a year. On the other hand, there have been a couple of hundred acts of vandalism from it.
At what point do we decide that its not a case of punishment, but a case of prevention - ironically of course, this is basically what you said in your edit comment.
Should we wait until five years' worth of solid vandalism has occured? Ten years? Meanwhile editors waste their time fixing the damage done and leaving impotent 'warning' messages, instead of improving articles.
There is, I believe, a procedure for shared IPs whereby blocked IPs can appeal. It seems simple enough: if the school (in this case) promises to control the pupils, then we let them have another chance. This seems perfectly rational to me, and not merely a "Let's punish the bastards!" reaction, which is perhaps the attitude you thought I had taken? --Mal 10:23, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shashwat Pandey - Sahaj Marg

[edit]

Dear Riana,

Thank you for your help on the Sahaj Marg and Shri Ram Chandra Mission pages.

I notice you unblocked Shashwat Pandey and would please ask you to keep an eye on this site today. If you look at Shashwat's talk page, you'll see repeated flagrant violations over a long period of time of reversions and refusals to collaborate with persons.

He's already in mediation with another user.

I honestly don't know how to get agreement with him. I'll write something that's straight middle-of-the-road using the terms he wants (he always wants to put "claims" into sentences because he has a hostile POV toward Sahaj Marg) so I redid this sentence to simply state what Sahaj Marg was, and incorporated his term "claims" into it (even though I don't agree, SM does offer training, not "claims to"):

Sahaj Marg (Simple Path) is a meditation system offered by Shri Ram Chandra Mission, which claims to offer training training in spirituality.

His response was to deny that Sahaj Marg is a meditation system! And also, that we shouldn't use the word "claims" (this after he changed it multiple times to use the word claims). Sfacets joined in and said that was ridiculous and tried to revert his changes but Shashwat just ignored him and put it back. Another editor wrote on the SRCM discussion board (Don) that he agreed with my edits, and Shashwat reverted that too.

So, I don't know if it's possible to reasonably work with him, because whatever is edited, he argues against, and he seems to think he's the only editor.

Any advice is appreciated.

Renee --Renee 07:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shashwat Pandey - Six changes in 1 hour; NO discussion

[edit]

Dear Riana,

Since you have unblocked Shashwat, he has gone back in and made SIX unilateral edits in just one hour, WITHOUT any discussion on the talk page.

I request that he be blocked for a week or so, so that those who want to discuss the matter can review the changes and talk about them.

He seems to see the Sahaj Marg page as his page, and that only he has the right to edit. Also, he has a clear negative point-of-view and keeps trying to promote the group as a cult, when in my POV it is just a meditation group.

Help is appreciated.

Thanks for your input

[edit]

Hi Riana,

Thanks for your input on Sahaj Marg article, i will be highly greatful incase you can share your thoughts regatrding your latest message on my talk page. Why do you feel that i should not edit ? given the fact that other editor's are free to edit, i doubt that person who requested you to intervine is new to wikipedia (this is just a doubt, not sure) as i have experienced something similar before as well, when a perticular user protrays herself (may be himslef) as new to wiki, and made lot of edits.

Which of my edits you have found not adhereing to wiki policy, i will be happy to correct them, kindly note, the page is already under mediation and large edit such as what was make is not acceptable at this point of time. I would suggest to get the original content of the page back, allow the mediation process to complete and then whatever is still not agreed can be discussed.

Giving warning's without specifying the exact content which has violated any wiki policy should be avoided.

Kindly let me know the reason for your latest message.

Tnx.--Shashwat pandey 09:35, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gilo

[edit]

Hi Riana, With due respect, I don't think it is fair to protect the version established by one ["cabal"-crying] IP's 10RR against that endorsed by four other users. I'm aware of the "wrong version" issues, but this case really is one where the established users are being punished for following policy, and some random IP's disruption is rewarded. Please reconsider, TewfikTalk 09:55, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You know you can't ask me to do that! :) I'm sorry, I protected in the version I found it in. I'm not going to revert now. Riana (talk) 10:17, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Gilo

[edit]

Have you any idea the kind of POV pushing going on at Gilo? It is truly shocking. It is a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem taken by the Israelis by force and then settled against international law. Almost every independent media organization in the world calls it a settlement ... I cited the UN and the BBC ... another user a month ago cited similar sources. Only the Israeli government call it a neighbourhood (a laughable term ... it's a sealed off hill-top settlement/colony surrounded by hostile Palestinians), and their supporters follow suit. On wikipedia five Israeli/Jewish users are reverting everyone who makes mention of this in the lead, and deleting their sources to boot, hoping they'll go away. That is the very definition of a cabal.

BTW, the controversy of Gilo is dealt with in a documentary online. About two and a half minutes through, this documentary it discusses Gilo in particular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzBxdHJLAxo&mode=related&search= I ask that you take five minutes to watch it. I'm not a random anon. I'm the consensus of the most people, it's just that the demographics of that article's watchlist are messed up. And I'm not some nutter, I'm just trying to get no-POV on that article. Yours- "random anon"

I understand, I really do. And I don't believe that just because you choose to contribute anonymously, your edits are any less valuable. But edit-warring is not going to gain you any sympathy, nor is it going to be helpful in maintaining a peaceful editing atmosphere. I'll keep an eye on the article and see how it develops, and in the meantime please use the talkpage for discussion. Regards, Riana (talk) 10:24, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A "random IP" who's very familiar with the terms and workings of Wikipedia...in any case, the IP has massively violated 3RR. Is a temporary block not justified? Changing the "wrong version" might set a bad precedent though. nadav (talk) 10:29, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The best way to deal with this is by punishing the person who is actually violating WP policies. Arrow740 10:35, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

testing new message bar

[edit]

Hi Riana, could you please send me a talk page message? I'm trying something out and I need a message to see if it works the way I hope it does. Any old message will do. Thanks! --Kyoko 17:01, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's looking too pale now, with a pale purple "You have new messages" on top of a pink-purple background. The "(diff)" part looks fine, though. I've been trying to use colours from my userpage, but I forget which hex code corresponds to which colour. Try now. --Kyoko 17:13, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's much better now, very similar in appearance to the part on my page where it says "My user page / ma page utilisateur / 私 の 利用者ページ". Thanks for the help! --Kyoko 17:17, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The bar still isn't quite what I would like, because the linked words still show up as blue or purple, depending on whether I've clicked them recently. Do you know how to fix that in the monobook.css? I don't want to change my Firefox global settings just for the sake of Wikipedia. If you know how to fix this, you're welcome to edit my css page. Thanks again, Kyoko 17:25, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, try now. --Kyoko 17:34, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It still looks the same. I think I'll swap the colours so that it is dark text on a light background, because that seems to be easier to read, regardless of the blue/purple links. Thanks for your patience. --Kyoko 17:40, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good idea, I borrowed it. I also figure out how to change the link colors: User:Until(1 == 2)/monobook.css. Until(1 == 2) 17:43, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, nice! OK, I'll go put it in Kyoko's css :) Riana (talk) 17:44, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, it helps to clear the cache before clicking on the new messages bar, doesn't it? Try again, please. :) --Kyoko 17:50, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Now the "new messages" words appear in the same colour as the "You have", and the "last change" is in a darker purple, which is fine. I might play around with it more in the future, but it's good enough, and most importantly, I can read it. That's more than I could say for one of the earlier versions, where the links were almost the same colour as the background. :\ Thanks again for all your help! --Kyoko 18:04, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

action please

[edit]

Dear Riana,

Shashwat Pandey is posting flagrant POV edits on the Sahaj Marg page now, some are completely slanderous and unethical.

Specifically, he just changed one line to read: The goal of the Sahaj Marg practice is to become one with divine, represent by the leader involved in various criminal/acts of violence and forgery activities. (He got this information off of a blog and an anti-SRCM site. Please note that repeat court cases in India have ruled in favor of the current group, though another group repeately files false allegations that are dismissed by courts. Nothing has been ruled in support of these allegations ever.)

Then, he changed the first line. It previously said that "Sahaj Marg is a meditation system." He changed it to read, "Sahaj Marg is a system of obedience to its leader."

And there's more, but you get a taste of what's happening. He has a very anti-Sahaj Marg blog that should serve his POV purposes, but he insists on unilaterally changing things without consultation or feedback. And, I just had secured consensus previously on the meditation issue, the secte issue, and on grammar and flow (the order issue).

Help!!! I don't know what to do but I'd like to follow Wiki procedures.

Renee --Renee 18:57, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. I believe that Einstein 22, who also appears on this Sahaj Marg page, is either a sock-puppet or a meat-puppet. (He said he was Shashwat's roommate.) Please see this exchange: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Einstein_22&oldid=136395516

Hi Riana, It still amazes me that otherwise "anonymous" editors take the time to place !votes and comments on RfAs. Admin coaching

[edit]

As a non-admin user, I'm wondering why you and others are coaching supposedly prospective admins, especially since the one case I've seen involves a user who hasn't got a clue. What good is it to WP if a prospective admin gives the "right" answer rather than the one he or she thinks is correct? If they don't know the policies, they're not admin material, and I think this coaching process is covering up deficiencies. If someone is admin material they will be familiar enough with policy to know what to do, and if they don't know what to do, they should not be an admin. MSJapan 11:08, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Users like to be admin coached to help them learn the policies and guidlines to a higher standard. We don't just learn them over night, it takes times and often requires the help of a more experienced user to help the user see things from an administration point of view. In many ways, it's a more advanced version of the adopt a user program. I find your insinuation that a user who Riana is coaching "hasn't got a clue" to be truely disrespectful - this is why they go for admin coaching, to improve their skills and knowledge. I am taken a back that you have come here in an attempt to belittle a user that is working in absolute good faith for the project, but may be a litte misguided. I hope you retract at least part of the above statement. Ryan Postlethwaite 11:18, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you retract your statement in whole, actually, or I will never admin coach you myself ;) I would like you to be more frank about which user you think 'hasn't got a clue', because then I can try, in my own small way, to help guide them in the right direction. This is a big place, sometimes a hard place to wrap your head around... I myself don't know wikipolicy like the back of my hand. In times like that it's reassuring to have someone who does know what things are about to help out. If you feel that admin coaching in general is a bad thing, do feel free to start a discussion at the village pump - many people feel very strongly in favour of it, and many feel that it's a waste of time, like you seem to. However, I personally think it's great to be told whether you're doing well or badly. Even if not all admin coachees are prospective admin candidates, if it makes you a better user of Wikipedia, how is that a bad thing? Riana (talk) 16:16, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Exposing identity and personal attack

[edit]

Hi Riana,

I have observed recently that renee is getting personal with my edits and trying to paint me in black color, given the fact that one can choose any user-name to edit wiki, but when a person is true to himself he does not need to hide behind any object, there is a wiki policy which prohibits exposing personal identities of people on wiki, and i feel renee is getting close to it, on your talk page also, her approach is more of against me then, edits or POV. This has put me in direct threat of personal safety, as you have been involved with her, i would request you to kindly advice her on how to aviode such acts, and avoide getting personal with other user's. This is very important, otherwise it can seriously undermine wiki project itself. --Shashwat pandey 11:37, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Riana,
I believe that the facts are being misrepresented here. I believe there is a long-term pattern of point-of-view abuse by Shashwat (see his user discussion page, it's not just me). Using information accessed through Wikipedia only (his user page and links to his blog off of the Sahaj Marg article) I have provided this evidence to administrators. I don't know his real name or any other personal information (beyond what he's provided on his user page, that he's Indian and lives in his dream country of the U.S.).
I feel these accusations are really below the belt. When Shashwat wrote me on my site I apologized if I caused him offense, explained that I didn't post anything that wasn't available off of Wikipedia, and immediately asked him to work with me on creating a neutral stub.
There is a huge problem with a strong agenda being promoted on the Sahaj Marg and Shri Ram Chandra Mission sites and I am really trying to focus on creating something neutral and in the spirit of Wiki.

Renee, and personal attack/defamation

[edit]

Hi Riana,

I have noticed recently that Renee is approaching various admins with request to block me without citing any valid reason, however i have also noticed that she even tried to interfear with mediation process, by asking the mediator to ban me !!

She approached you as well, and you acting on her advice, somehow missed the discussion and banned me for sometime.

I had repeatedly tried to convince her that this page is under mediation and no major changes should be done while this process is underway, but insted of waiting to let the mediation process get over, she/he (?) changed the complete page and disturbed the process.

Moreover, she is even connecting me with a friend of mine who is well versed with wiki policy but is not very much involved.

It seems her one point agenda is to get me banned, this is against wiki policy to supress any POV, also i have serious doubt about her being new to wiki, as i have many times observed similar behaviour in past, by various user names also.Kindly note her approach to various admins, even after spending around 7 months on wiki i do not know how to identify an admin, but she/he contacted many admins and tried to get me banned.

For your reference kindly see these comments by her/him.

1. [3] She contacted you and influenced you to banned me just by reading her POV, my openion here is you should have asked for my stand before taking any such action.

2.[4] here she directly approached the mediator and asked him to block me!!

3. [5] i tried to convince her for not making any major changes in the page as it is under mediation.

4. She is putting false and factually incorrect information in the page to establish a POV such as this [6] case is still pending and claim is it is in favor of one group !!

5. Note this [7] Sahaj Marg is not an organization put for POV push she/he mentioned that it was registered as organization.

6. Kindly note religious claims which she is representing as fact's like in case of connection with God etc, they are just claims and cannot be stated as fact in any neutral article.

7. There are many more cases like this [8] when i was out of town, i asked one of my friend to get involved in this article, which was not at all hidden, he even exposed his name etc to renee even after that just to get me banned she is making such absured claims.

8. Kindly make sure any other admin is not influenced by her false propaganda against me.

9. Does this qualifies as personal attack ? if yes what is the next step. I have even tried to convince her/him about validity of difference of openion on wiki [9] but i feel this will not have any effect on her, as her one point agenda seems to be to get me banned so that false and incorrect information such as pointed above can be placed without any discussion.

10. How can you help in getting her quite till mediation process is not complete ?

Also kindly note [10] when she tried to put a block on me, without signing her name, and then subsequently she tried to protray as if that message was from someone else [11] here she had stated Please note that you are receiving a vandalism warning for your immediate reversions to your original page what would you call such a behaviour ? if this qualifies with personal attack policy of WIKI, what are the steps that i can initiate ?

Thanks in advance--Shashwat pandey 18:10, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I feel renee [12] has seriously violated WP:NPA by trying to connect me with a blog on internet, this in my view is a clear case of attempt to expose a person's identity, and was done with same intention, as there is/was no referene to any blog on my user page ever.

Even if i am not the owner of that blog, people may take this as truth and my personal safety is direct under threat!! This act, of connecting me with a blog, which is so much against one group, may put me in serious threat for personal safety. I feel renee is suitable to be banned for a longer duration of time, according to stated policy at WP:NPA

Threats or actions which expose other Wikipedia editors to political, religious or other persecution by government, their employer or any others. Violations of this sort may result in a block for an extended period of time, which may be applied immediately by any administrator upon discovery

Deletion of Talk:HHO gas

[edit]

Hi. Can you please undelete Talk:HHO gas? WP:CSD#G8 does not apply. The latest DRV specified that the articles will be kept, but the content merged into Oxyhydrogen. — Omegatron 01:35, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

checkY Done :) Riana (talk) 01:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Can you remove the CSD notice, too? — Omegatron 01:45, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And done. Riana (talk) 01:59, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That talk page has been inappropriately deleted again. I'm not going to touch it because I'll be accused of being an "involved admin", but it needs to be undeleted and stay undeleted. Can a notice be put at the top that it shouldn't be speedied from now on? — Omegatron 01:02, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Omegatron, I wasn't involved in the AN discussion about this article, or the DRV, but I was reading up on some background today, and nothing indicates to me that the talk should stay undeleted. Since the article is now userfied, may it be better to centralise the discussion in the user talk space also? Tbeatty has told me that the talk should stay deleted, so I'm not sure how to play this one out. I await your advice. Cheers, Riana (talk) 03:09, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well that's to be expected.  :-) He was trying to delete the article, and I was trying to get it kept. But since the article was kept, with a specification that the content be merged into the new article, we kind of need to have that content accessible, don't we? Look through the References section on the talk page, for instance. The editors of the merged article can't be expected to research all those references again from scratch when the talk page can just be kept undeleted.
I've asked the closing admin for clarification. See also Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_comment/Omegatron#Oxyhydrogen, User_talk:Enochlau#HHO_gas.
Sorry for dragging you into this. — Omegatron 03:23, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A yup! That's another open proxy to blow up. Want me to show ya how I do it? fairly easy, really ;) SirFozzie 03:17, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. What I do is use the Check IP template (no, not the actual checkuser tool that real Checkusers use, but it has some interesting tools in it. Let's take the example of the IP you just gave me.

68.45.51.141 (talk+ · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser (log))

the useful tools are in order (at least dealing with JB)

1) Where the RDNS resolves to. If it's outside the US, then it's a proxy. JB lives here in the states. If you see something like Kuwait City, or Brazil (which two of the open proxies that JB have used resolve to).. well.. that's a pretty good telltale right there 2) The 2nd Step is the RBL list (or Realtime Blackhole List. That brings up a site which will check the IP against a number of lists that track various things.. the more red.. the more likely it is to be a proxy. there's some reds that you can ignore (Dynamic IP's and the like).. but there are some lists (ones used for detecting phish attempts and the like that if I see, is nearly an instantaneous confirmation of it being a proxy. [edit]

Hey Riana, I'm just curious what that was that you were using. Is that a utility or an admin function? I was reverting this user's vandalism one article at a time, which even with Twinkle is a little time consuming with how many article he hit. But then suddenly you had reverted all the ones I hadn't gotten to yet at once. If that is an admin function, too bad. If that's just a utility I can drop into my monobook page, I WANT! :-) Trusilver 04:51, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hah! :) It's rollback, which is an admin function - it looks the same as normal Twinkle functions on the contribs/page history, except it's much faster, because it's not actually editing the page, but sending a message to the database to remove the edits of that particular user. Twinkle is pretty fast though, better than popups, which is what I used for RC-patrol :) Riana (talk) 04:54, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is no dispute over the article with the exception of this single banned editor. Not on a permanent basis, no. Riana (talk) 15:21, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it should be deleted and you probably don't want to get wrapped up in it. They keep adding material to the talk page in the hope the main page will be resurrected. Omegatron's actions regarding these articles is currently in an RfC here. It's apparently in user space now so that's okay as long as it's not resurrected but it shouldn't become the focal point for the various contributors from the deleted article. --Tbeatty 17:28, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I know editors can also close AfDs, but I don't want to jump in right now. Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Father_Michael_Goetz_Secondary_School is a highschool I put up for AfD. I've read up since and found that there seems to be a general understanding that all highschools are notable. While I disagree, if this is the consensus, then I'll go with it. Could you close that AfD early (based on precedent) or should it be allowed to run its own course? Thanks,xC | 19:03, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
