Thoughts on inclusion criteria

[edit]

There are two big, related challenges with this sort of article. The first is the size of the scope. The second is determining what belongs and what doesn't. What's important is to have clear inclusion criteria so that it doesn't turn into a free-for-all of off-hand fact-checks.

So how about this. To include something here:

  1. The claim must be frequently repeated. This isn't a page for an outrageous claim that was fact-checked and never mentioned again but for claims and narratives with persistence.
  2. At least three good sources should focus on the claim/narrative. Inclusion in a list of bogus claims after a speech, for example, can be used but don't contribute to this minimum of three.
  3. The consensus that it's misinformation must be strong.

Some further points/best practices:

  • no need for a distinction with disinformation here. Disinformation is fundamentally misinformation plus intent to deceive, and getting into intent is too messy.
  • Ditto the term lie/lying. Too messy; best avoided here. Just be clear that a claim is false/untrue/inaccurate.
