phonetic vs phonemic transcriptions
[edit](Moved from user page) Hi! I'm writing about your latest edit on American and British English pronunciation differences, where you changed /aɪl/ to /aɪɫ/. As far as I can understand, even though the "l"s are in fact velarized, we shouldn't transcribe them as such since the difference is not phonemic (never changes the meaning of words). (I think the reason is that meticulous phonetic transcription involves drawing attention to details in pronounciation that generally only matters when comparing different languages.) Check Help:IPA for English, and you'll see that the English "l"-sound is transcribed /l/ ––St.nerol (talk) 07:31, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
