Image uploads
[edit]Yup, you're right, there's a lot to learn and the image licensing tags can be overwhelming. Trying to clarify: Wikipedia's text is released under GFDL, a free-distribution license that means (summarized) that anyone can use it for any purpose as long as it's correctly attributed. Since WP would like all of its material to be free-use so that users don't have to figure out which paragraphs, images, articles, etc. are available and which aren't, uploading things under a noncommercial-only license defeats that goal. As it says on the upload page,
- "Please do not upload files under a "non-commercial use only" or "copyrighted, used by permission" licence. Such files will be deleted. "
Since you've uploaded Image talk:SchHpaddown.jpg for noncommercial use only, it really needs to be deleted again, which would be too bad, because it's nice to have an illustration in the article. (Yeah, WP is full of images that were uploaded under similar licenses, and it's slowly trying to purge itself of such. Sigh.) Would you consider releasing it under GFDL instead (I'm guessing that you probably won't feel like releasing into thepublic domain)? I can try to answer questions if you have any, but I'm not a legal expert, either, just a dog fan. Elf | Talk 00:42, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Elf; I very much appreciate your comments, but will need some time to reflect on this rather odd situation. My initial reaction is that the WP position on copyright is somewhat extreme and may, in the long run, deprive a good idea of graphic material. You guessed right, I will not allow others to profit at my expense, it’s already bad enough that governments think they have a right to force me into it with their taxes. BTW; I tried to post on your talk page, but could not get it to save. --Rgsd 11:51, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:SchHtracking.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:SchHtracking.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Carnildo or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you.
